Chapter 6: I Swear
“Mr... Mr. Granger?”
David watched John kneel before Elise while trembling and couldn’t believe his eyes.
He wondered if it was an illusion.
John was Sunrise Properties’ owner. The company wasn’t huge, but five or six times bigger than Lands Corporation. However, he knelt before Elise and insisted on asking her to sign the investment contract.
He even offered 60 million dollars and was willing to add more.
“What on earth is going on?”
Not only the directors but also Elise was baffled. She knew John’s background and remembered how arrogant he had been the previous day. However, he seemed to be an utterly different person now.
“Mr. Granger, what are you doing? Hurry. Stand up!”
David trotted over to help him up. However, John shook off his hands fiercely and glared at him. “Bastard! If you hadn’t asked me to cooperate, I wouldn’t have become like this.”
“What happened?”
David was confused.
“What happened? Don’t you know anything? Since this morning, a mysterious affluent organization has suppressed Sunrise Properties' stock. They’d rather lose some profit to repress 12% of our stock price. Within three hours, we lost 60 million dollars. The loss still increases each second.”
“Later, our company website was hacked by countless hackers, and our server broke down. All the products’ prices were changed to one dollar. Thousands of orders were made in a few minutes. We lost 100 million dollars in total.”
“Moreover, several clients companies that hadn’t signed agreements with us called me to cancel the cooperation. They told me I’d offended someone and asked me to bring the investment contract here to apologize to Ms. Elise Houry.”
“You tell me. What happened? I’m going bankrupt,” John roared hoarsely at David.
If it weren’t for David, he wouldn’t have offended Elise and made his company bankrupt.
The next second, John turned to Elise and begged, “Ms. Houry, please. It was my fault yesterday. I... I was too arrogant. Please punish me. Please sign this contract. I also lack some funds right now, so I can only offer 60 million dollars for the time being. If you need more, I’ll slowly transfer other funds over.”
While he spoke, he slapped himself.
Others in the conference room couldn’t return to their senses at all.
‘Sunrise Properties is going bankrupt because it has offended Elise?’
They couldn’t believe Elise was so powerful, as she made the arrogant owner of Sun Properties bring the investment contract to her in person and was willing to add more investment. It seemed John didn’t care about how much to spend as long as Elise would forgive him.
When Lands Corporation was at its peak, its total fund was only 100 million dollars.
So far, only 60 million was left, but John offered to invest the same amount, which was like a bombshell to them.
However, Elise looked baffled, wondering what was going on. After hesitation, she looked over at Robin with a puzzled look.
“Not me.”
Robin shook his head.
“Of course not. How could you be so powerful? Humph!”
Elise turned around, the ray of hope fading off her mind again. In fact, she always hoped for her husband to be a hero.
John almost burst into tears. Elise finally signed the contract.
“Thank you, Ms. Houry. It’s so kind of you,” John kept expressing his gratitude to Elise.
Elise felt awkward. In her impression, John was a man of status who was always surrounded by bodyguards and wore tailored clothes that cost several million dollars.
After signing the contract, Elise was delighted. Thinking about Robin's bet on her behalf, she looked over at her grandfather while holding the contract. “I’ve signed it, Grandpa.”
The old man’s smile stiffened. After hesitating for a long time, he said, “Elise, you are a girl. Why do you want to work so hard?”
“Grandpa, you should keep your promise. You are the master of the Houry family, a well-respected elder,” Robin chimed in, emphasizing his words.
“Robin Bailey, I haven’t accepted you yet. Stop calling me grandpa!”
Finally, Elise’s grandfather left the conference room in anger. He had to accept the bet. Earlier, afraid Elise would go back on her word, he deliberately called so many senior executives to witness the scene.
However, they also stopped him from going back to his word.
He shot himself in the foot.
“You are lucky this time. I wonder who has helped you behind it.”
David glared at Elise coldly and left the conference room.
Elise also walked out joyfully. Seven years ago, she was kicked out from the board of directors. However, she returned after such a weird thing happened.
On the way, Elise thought it over and over again, and her gaze finally fell on Robin. Frowning, she asked, “Did you do it or not?”
“Yes, I did, but not in person. I joined the military seven years ago and rescued a wealthy man. He helped me to return my favor,” Robin replied.
“Did you join the military? Why?” Elise asked.
“Because I wanted to become a man who deserved you.”
His words made Elise’s heart perform a somersault. However, thinking about her dowry and the 20,000 dollars Robin borrowed from Karen, she was still upset because he had left without saying goodbye or returning once in the past seven years. She questioned him, “What about the 20,000 dollars you borrowed from my mother? Didn’t you take all my money away?”
“Money? What do you mean?”
Robin looked puzzled.
“On the day you left, you took away my dowry and bank cards and borrowed 20,000 dollars from my mothers.”
Elise stopped mid-step, glaring at Robin. That was the matter making her hate Robin the most in the past seven years, and it also made her believe he was a scum.
“I never did it. I left without a penny or anything.”
“Really?”
“Really.”
“You swear.”
“I, Robin Bailey, swear. If I took away your dowry and bank cards and borrowed 20,000 dollars from your mother, I would die miserably and never end in Heaven...”
His oath made Elise keep silent for a long time. Suddenly, her phone rang. She swiped to answer. “Hello, Ms. Houry. I’m calling to remind you about your divorce appointment with the city council at six o’clock this afternoon...”
