Chapter 5: Sixty Million Dollars
The following day.
Elise fumbled in her room and found the marriage license.
“Seven years ago, you left me without saying goodbye. Robin Bailey, you can’t blame me for being heartless,” Elise muttered coldly.
Holding the marriage license, she decided to divorce Robin after work today.
“Mom...”
Leslie walked over in a dress. Tears welled up in her dewy eyes when her gaze fell on the marriage license. “Dad has just returned, Mom.”
“Your dad is dead.”
Leslie’s tearful look softened Elise’s heart. However, for their future life, Elise didn’t want to keep in touch with that scum anymore. She hugged Leslie and left home.
At the company entrance, she looked up at Lands Corporation’s logo, a trace of nostalgia flashing through her eyes. She was the founder of this company and developed it bit by bit.
Suddenly, Elise saw a man standing upright at the entrance.
She recognized it was Robin.
“Why are you here, Robin Bailey?”
“Waiting for you,” Robin answered while smiling at her.
“Waiting for me? Save it! The Houry family must have paid you to watch the result, afraid something unexpected would happen, right? Once my 10% is transferred, you will receive the rest of the pay, won’t you?”
The longer Elise wondered, the sullener she looked.
“Nope. I have nothing to do with those jerks.” Robin shook his head in denial.
However, Elise didn’t believe him. “Humph! Then you have another intention. You wish to laugh at me, don’t you? I can make your wish come true. After this matter, we will go to the city council for divorce. I’ve made an appointment.”
“No, Elise. Please let me explain.”
Before Robin explained, Elise stormed away on high heels quickly and coldly. She didn’t forget to remind him, “Don’t get lost. I don’t want to wait for another day.”
Robin was a scum, in her opinion, so she wished they could divorce ASAP.
Robin hurriedly followed her. As Primus, he couldn’t let lost when following a woman. Therefore, he kept a yard's distance from her.
Elise entered the conference room of the management team, which had been fully packed. One old man sitting on the host’s seat had gray hair but looked spirited. Seeing Elise enter, he slowly opened his eyes, his gaze gradually falling on Robin. The old man asked, “It turned out this beggar had returned to town for real.”
Scorn was written all over his eyes.
“Grandpa.”
Elise frowned at his tone. No matter what, Robin was still her nominal husband.
“Why are you so mad, Elise? We scold him for your own good. He harassed you seven years ago, left you without saying farewell, and let you be pregnant. Your daughter had no father in the past seven years. Why are you protective of a bastard like him?” David stood up and mentioned the matter again.
In the name of Elise’s own good, he let people on the scene mock her again.
That matter was the pain in Elise’s neck.
“All right. Such a loser isn’t worth us discussing again. He voluntarily followed Elise here to be the witness. Let’s continue talking about the matter yesterday.”
Elise’s grandfather flicked his hand and changed the subject.
“Elise promised and bet with us yesterday. If a company’s owner doesn’t deliver an investment contract by noon today, Elise will return the rest 10% of the company shares to our family,” David stood upright and replied excitedly.
“Elise turns out to be so generous. I thought she would never return the shares to the company. I didn’t expect her to return it without asking for anything.”
“What was in your mind, Elise? Earlier, we offered a lot of money to buy your shares, but you insisted that it was the last thing you had in Lands Corporation and refused. Now, you’re willing to give it back for free.”
“Elise, you do care about our Houry family, don’t you? I misunderstood you before. Sorry for that.”
Other people in the meeting room laughed loudly.
They all knew how much Elise treasured her shares.
Besides, people who knew the inside story didn’t think anyone would show up with an investment contract today.
“You!”
Elise couldn’t help trembling, looking over at Robin behind her in disgust. If it weren’t for Robin, she wouldn’t have used her shares for the bet.
However, much to her surprise, Robin walked up. He glanced at the complacent ones and bit out, “David Houry, you didn’t mention another critical point. What if an investment contract will be brought here?”
“Well, with the contract?” David sneered and continued, “If so, Elise will return to the board of directors. However, do you really think such a thing will happen?”
“I don’t think so. The funding gap is too huge. At least six million dollars are needed to keep the company's operation normal. However, no company in Stillwater is willing to invest in Lands Corporation.”
“I’m the director of the PR department and in charge of communication. No company was willing to continue discussing the investment whenever I mentioned it. They also dodged. I’m afraid it’s challenging for us to find an investor today.”
“Challenging? It’ll never happen. We found Sunrise Properties willing to invest in Lands Corporation. The company owner wanted to let Leslie Bailey be his goddaughter. Elise was unwilling and refused him. She never thought of our company. How vicious! Fortunately, she has been kicked out of the board long ago.”
People in the meeting room discussed wantonly. In the past, Elise was the chairwoman of the board. However, after the incident seven years ago, they kicked her out.
“Elise, you can’t complain that I bully you. You are not suitable for managing Lands Corporation,” Elise’s grandfather remarked, narrowing his gaze.
Elise shivered. She was the company founder and developed it, but they said she wasn’t suitable to manage the company.
“Stop daydreaming, Elise. No company or investor will show up. I’m sure. There’s no such a fool willing to help us...” David chuckled.
Before he finished speaking, a man suddenly rushed into the conference room with a contract. He knelt to Elise and begged, “Ms. Houry... Please... Let go of my company. Please. This is the investment contract. I’m willing to offer 60 million dollars. If it’s not enough, I can add more...”
His voice was trembling, full of fear.
However, when the people from the Houry family recognized the man on the ground, their jaws went slack.
