Chapter 3
My thoughts suddenly dragged me back to my college days. Jan met Piers a year after I did. She was a freshman then, and just like in a novel, she fell for Piers at first sight. In front of all the teachers and students, she asked him for his email address. Piers was taken aback and bluntly told her that he already had a girlfriend. The incident caused quite a stir, and my classmates teased me about it.
That evening, as we studied together in the library, I pretended to be angry and ignored him. He lifted his hand, ruffled my hair, and smiled radiantly, "You know I only like you."
However, less than a month later, Jan appeared again at the sports meet. It was a scorching day, and everyone was sweating profusely. Her foundation had completely sweated off, giving her face a somewhat frightening yet comical appearance. The classmates didn't quite know what to make of this bold woman, but despite the odd looks, Jan still cheered loudly for Piers.
My deskmate snickered and made a teasing remark with an excited smile. Meanwhile, I sat in the front row of the stands under an umbrella, enjoying the spectacle. After the match, she immediately ran up to him. The scene made me uncomfortable.
Fortunately, Piers bypassed her and came straight to me, drying himself with a towel before asking, "Joan, are you coming to the celebration party tonight?" He hadn't glanced at Jan from the start to the end of the event.
Everyone watched Jan with a look of curiosity as she stood there with her head down, lost in thought. This sort of thing happened quite a few times. Jan was always tenacious, becoming well-known in school and a laughingstock during casual conversations. Whenever someone mentioned her, everyone knew they were talking about that girl who crazily chased after Piers.
