Summary
The husband was surrounded by a persistent suitor, whom he rejected repeatedly and ineffectively. Until the woman became terminally ill. She begged her husband bitterly to have a child for him. Later, my husband looked at me coldly as he held the cancer-ridden, bone-thin woman in his bed: "You're a strong woman, divorced from marriage and a career, and all she has is me."
Chapter 1
Before the business trip, Piers and I had a big fight over having children. On the night I returned home, to ease the tension, I voluntarily put on a uniform I hadn't worn for a long time. However, in the middle of our intimate moment, Piers's phone screen lit up and then went dark in the dim room. Before I could react, Piers pushed me away, grabbed his phone, and went into the bathroom. A few minutes later, he came out looking like he had encountered a difficult issue.
“I need to handle something. No need to wait up,” he said.
I was speechless and puzzled. In the middle of the night, what urgent matter could a university lecturer possibly need to attend to that couldn't wait even fifteen minutes? But Piers didn't give me a chance to ask. He grabbed his coat, turned, and walked out the door, leaving me alone in the bedroom, stunned and at a loss.
