Six

Femi whistled as he flipped the page of his Further Maths textbook and continued solving the questions. With the numerous exams approaching, he had a lot of readings to do even though he somehow didn’t need them that much. He knew his capability way too well; he knew exactly how his brain worked but he just wanted to read like others so no one would say he was showing off not that he minded though. His best friends walked in and sat down.

“Wetin that girl do you sef?” Peter asked.

Femi glanced at him and knowing what he was asking about refused to say anything and directly ignored him and continued solving his questions as Peter heaved a sigh before he continued speaking.

“You weren’t this aggressive with your insults before, why are you suddenly like this?” Peter asked again.

“Peter, I’m trying to read right now, stop disturbing me” Femi snapped at him getting irritated by each passing second.

“Free the girl abeg” Emmanuel added.

“You guys had better face your business. Besides you never complained before, what’s going on?” Femi asked.

Emmanuel pursed his lips before talking, “Don’t hate me okay?” Emmanuel said looking at Femi’s reaction before speaking again.

“I plan to ask Toyin out” Emmanuel said as something flashed in Femi’s eyes immediately as he closed his book.

“Tell me, when did that monkey start to catch your attention?” Femi asked.

“Femi, stop it. Toyin is beautiful and you know it!” Emmanuel snapped.

“Okay” Femi said as he turned back to his book and continued scribbling in his jotter.

“So whatever prejudice you have against her, clear it. She wouldn’t say yes if you continue” Emmanuel said earning a soft chuckle from Femi.

“Even if I don’t do anything, she’ll still turn you down” Femi replied earning a glare from Emmanuel.

“Why?” Emmanuel asked.

“She has a bad taste” Femi replied as Peter burst into laughter.

“Whatever. I just need you to stop acting like a child, okay?” Emmanuel asked as Femi laughed.

“What about we make a deal” Femi said with a smile.

“What deal?” Emmanuel asked.

“Throughout next week and for the rest of this week, I’ll not disturb her. If she says she; I’ll never approach her again” Femi replied as he wore a small smile “But if she turns you down, you do my duties till UTME and of course, I’ll still continue to disturb her” Femi added.

“Femi, don’t ever forget this deal. Okay, I accept” Emmanuel said with a smile.

Femi smiled as well as he turned back to his jotter. All these years that different people had asked her out, she had turned them down. He didn’t believe in the slightest that Toyin would accept Emmanuel. There weren’t friends and almost hadn’t even had a conversation before, why would Toyin tell him yes?

Femi smiled smugly at Emmanuel as he shook his head; he couldn’t wait for Emmanuel to start doing his duties. It was a deal with the outcome already known; Emmanuel was just raising his hopes too high.
