In Crescent High School, Akure, Ondo state, buildings painted with blue and a square logo with CRESCENT HIGH SCHOOL embedded in golden could be found on each wall. Each block stood tall and aloof in the morning sun. Teachers could be seen in each class teaching while the students looked with rapt attention silently. The silence in the school compound was marred by the loud voices and beats coming from one of SSS3 classes.
You know me who geng,
Chilling with the most high geng,
I’m chilling with the most high, geng,
This geng is the most high.
The class continued singing while different people used spoons and bottles to drum creating a loud disturbance on the block. Toyin bobbed her head to the beat of the song as she flipped open the next page of the Nora Roberts novel she was reading. She slowly pushed her glasses up as she continued bobbing her head.
“What impudence?” a voice thundered as the class went silent. A middle aged man walked into the class, anger and displeasure on his face.
“What is wrong with you people? Are you people aware you are in SSS3 at all? That you have less than three months before you start your WAEC, even your UTME exam is in a few weeks! Your mock starts after your UTME exam as well. And yet you people are making noise, singing and drumming” the middle aged man said in anger.
“I could hear your voices as far as SSS2 block, I was teaching and your noise kept disturbing my class. When a teacher isn’t in your class, you sat down and read!” the middle aged man said as the class roared with laughter.
The middle aged man dropped his head in embarrassment recalling his mistake in his last statement.
“Mr Thomas, if you want to give us advice, you have to be up to it, you have construct correct sentences, because if we listen to you, then we have all failed our English exams in both, mock, UTME and WAEC” a guy said as the class roared with laughter again.
The middle aged man took a glance at the class before walking out of the class ashamed. He should have taken the second thought before coming to this class, after all there were the worst class in the whole school, yet they were very intelligent.
“Who he epp?” a girl asked crossing her legs on her table.
“Abi o, na so teacher dey come talk to us, Thomas carry his leg come here too, wonders shall never end” another girl said clapping her hands against each other in mockery.
The class erupted in another round of laughter again. Toyin smiled at her classmates who were now throwing all sorts of insults at Mr Thomas. It was funny and hilarious at the same time and she couldn’t help the soft chuckle that passed through her lips. Her classmates had a flay for insulting people and they didn’t just have a flay, they were really, really, really good at it.
