Chapter 7
And Elena called saying that she was going to come see me because she needed to talk.
I'm sure just to complain about how all men are cowards and she was tired of her single life.
So when it was the end of the day, I just grabbed my stuffs and walked out of my office.
"Lydia." I smiled at my secretary. "What are you still doing here?"
"I didn't know if you needed something. You seemed to have a lot to do."
"That's really nice of you. But I'm done. You can go home now." I said and she nodded grabbing her things.
"Have a good night."
"You too, Lydia." I said locking my office door.
****
"Hey, I'm going home." I said leaning against the office's doorframe.
"Okay. Wait. Did you think about the conference in Italy?" Jason asked and I frowned. "You know you have to come this time right?"
"But I can't leave my mother alone."
"Vicky, you never left the country since you started working here. And I was okay with it because of your mom. But now you're not a student anymore. I need you and Seb there. You have to come." He explained and I sighed. "It's just for a couple of days."
He sighed when I still looked unsure.
"You can add my mother phone number to the emergency contacts. You know she'll be more than happy to help."
"Okay." I sighed defeated. "Let me know the dates." I said."Aren't you leaving?"
"I have to finish this first." He sighed. "Just tell me when you get home."
I nodded and left the office while closing the door behind me.
I know he was right. What was acceptable when I was a student is not anymore.
But what if I leave the country and I'm not here when my mother needs me. I'm the only one she has and I'm the only hospital contact.
Just as I was about to get in my car, I heard someone grumbled and the sound of someone falling.I looked back and saw a man trying to get up and failing, and I noticed that he is was an old man.
I closed my door and walked closer to him. "Are you okay sir?"
"Yes." He groaned. "My knee is just not as good anymore. I'm trying to go to that bench there to wait for my brother." He said pointing at the bench on the other side of the street.
"Let me help you." I smiled grabbing his arm as he stood up.
"You are a good person. What's your name, young lady?" He asked as we slowly started walking to the bench.
"Victoria."
"Victoria." He repeated. "It's really a pleasure to meet you."
I nodded as we got there. He slowly sat down and looked up at me.
"I'm sure you'll get what you deserve. Thank you for your help."
"No worries. Take care." I smiled trying to walk away but he stopped.
"My name is Kevin. Please remember it."
I nodded and walked away. I unlocked my car again and turned to look his way again.
Is it safe to leave him here alone? He's old.
"What are you still doing here?" I jumped at Jason's voice and looked at him.
"There's an old who needed help and-" I stopped when I turned back to see a car stopping by and the old man getting in.
"And you just did. Don't you know what they say about strangers. And what was he doing so close to the building?"
I huffed. "I don't know, Mr. Suspicious. He was an old man with a bad knee. Nothing could have happened."
He just looked back at the man.
"And how did you know I was still here? You were looking at the cameras again, creep."
He moved his gaze to me. "It's dark. Just wanted to make sure you got to your car safely."
I smiled nodding. "I still think you're a creep."
He sighed opening my car door. "Just be careful. Elena called to tell me that she needed to talk to you tonight, so I could go to hell."
I chuckled getting in my car. "Then you can go to hell."
He shook his head with a smile before closing the door. I started the car and looked at the rear view to see the car with the old man just leaving.
****
The first thing I did going home was take a quick shower knowing that Elena would be coming anytime soon. And I was right because the doorbell rang just finished putting my clothes on.
Well at least I know a Knight knows how to ring a bell or knock.
I opened the door and saw her with two huge boxes of pizza and a bag of drinks.
"I brought pizza and coke for you, since you don't drink alcohol. Because I brought wine for myself. I need a drink."
I smiled as she just walked past me.
"Are you okay?" I asked with a laugh following her to the living room.
She sets everything on the and sat down kicking her shoes off before grabbing my blanket and wrapping it around herself.
"I'm not okay." She mounted opening the box of Pizza as I sat beside her taking a slice and napkin. "I'm depressed."
"Michael?"
"Yes! Why are men coward. My father is crazy and I'm 25. I'm going to die with cats around me." She exclaimed handing me a can of coke.
"You father wants protect you." I smiled as she practically stuffed the whole slice of pizza in her mouth.
"You don't understand." She said looking at me with wide eyes. "My father is really crazy. Like really crazy. So are my brothers. You should know."
"Maybe." I chuckled. "I'm just not gonna call your father crazy. But I can say that your brothers are. But I thought you weren't upset about Michael."
"I'm not upset about him. He's a coward. Why are they all cowards?" She said angrily.
"Because you haven't found the one yet."
She huffed. "Yeah. Still thinking I'm gonna die with cats, though."
"No. You won't." I sighed.
"You just wait. Cats and an old woman. Just keep that image."
I laughed and my house phone started ringing.
"I thought I told my brother to go to hell." She groaned glaring the phone as I picked it up. "He is the one pushing my boyfriends away. So he's gonna have to share you."
Unknown number.
"I don't think it's your brother."
"Hello?" I answered.
I frowned when there was no answer.
"Hello?" I repeated after checking if the person was still on the line.
"Who is it?" Elena asked with her mouth full.
I shrugged and hung up.
I jumped again when the phone started ringing again right away.
"Hello!"
Still no answer.
"Who is it?" I asked.
I knew there was someone because I could here them breathing.
Elena huffed and grabbed the phone.
"Who is it?" She snapped. "Speak or don't call again. Asshole. My brother is going to kick your ass." She hung the phone and slammed it on the table.
"My phone." I gasped. "Don't slam it, crazy."
"It's the person's fault. Who calls at this time anyways?" She mumbled.
