Chapter 8 Risk His Life for the Marriage
Page heard it all and instantly turned pale before saying seriously: "Camille, how many times have I told you, never be furtive? You're not a country girl anymore; you are Miss Camille from the Armstrong family, Ayan's wife."
Camille glanced down with a blank expression before nodding slowly: "Mom, I understand."
Page relaxed slightly then said lightly: "Come sit down."She walked over and sat down with a straight back, exuding elegance. Her bright and beautiful face was unforgettable, no matter what dress she wore. That was the only thing about her Page was satisfied with.
Page's eyes overflowed with pale gentleness as she asked, "Why are you back at this time?"
"Mom, I'm divorcing Ayan," Camille replied.
Camille met Page's gaze with a determined look in her eyes that didn't waver.
Page was shocked while Grace looked surprised. But as soon as Page gathered her senses again, she frowned and asked, "What did you say? You want to divorce Ayan?"
"Yes," Camille said firmly. "We're getting a divorce and we're going to sign the agreement on Monday."
"Camille, do you know what you're talking about?" Page exclaimed in disbelief. "This is the marriage that Grandpa risked his life for! And now you say you don't want it?"
Camille and Ayan's marriage wasn't an arranged one between two wealthy families; rather, it came about because of an accident years ago when the old Armstrong saved the old Simpson's life by sacrificing one of his legs. The old Simpson immediately proposed their kids' union, but it was not until in Ayan’s generation did his promise be realized..
The original marriage wasn't meant for Camille but for Grace, who was the most popular member of Armstrong family at that time. However, after giving birth to Camilla, her uterus got damaged, making her unable to have children anymore.
At that time the old Armstrong was already seriously ill, it was the him who insisted on bringing her back from the countryside to marry into the Simpson family, and even threatened Camille's father with death beforehe achieved his goal.
She spent ten years in the countryside before returning home after marrying Ayan just last year.
Page got up furiously from her seat and walked over towards Camilla asking sternly: “Answer me! Are you just having a temper tantrum?”
"Ayan is going to marry Eileen,” replied Camilla calmly without flinching or wavering under pressure from her mother's anger. "I've signed off on it; it's not just talk...."
Snap!
A crisp slap landed hard on Camilla’s cheek, leaving everyone stunned into silence...Her slightly curled eyelashes trembled as her ears buzzed, making her think she was deaf for a moment. Page's fury could be told from the sound of the slap. However, he wasn't sorry and pointed towards the door sternly saying, "Get out! The Armstrong family doesn't have a daughter like you." Camille stood up and left with her feet dragging behind her like a puppet on strings.
Page was also the first to inform her husband that Ayan and Camille's marriage wasn't just between them, but between two families and businesses. Getting a divorce wasn't going to be easy.
Exiting Armstrong's villa, Camille stood by her car, holding back tears. Her biggest concern was still the baby in her belly; she inwardly thanked herself it had only been a slap across the face rather than somewhere else. Did she feel sad for being beaten? No way! Although it was the first time Page hit her. She felt nothing but silent indifference towards Page's cold violence for a long time, something she had grown accustomed to over time.
If getting slapped meant she could get divorced from Ayan, then so be it; she would take that trade any day of the week. She looked sullen as she got into her car when Grace called out to her from behind: "Camille, are you really going to divorce Ayan?"
Camille didn't say anything but gave Grace an emotionless stare instead.
Grace frowned: "If you don't cherish him, why did you marry him in the first place? Don’t forget that Armstrong Corp is not what it used to be these days; Dad is depending on Simpson family support. You are too selfish."
"So what?" Camille retorted sharply.
She could tolerate Ayan because she loved him deeply despite his flaws - just as much as tolerating Page because there seemed no other choice available at present times. But that didn’t mean anyone could question or educate her about how things should be done!
Grace froze: "What do you mean?"
"Are you suggesting I beg Ayan not to get divorced, even though I know he loves Eileen more than me? Should I sacrifice my self-respect for someone who doesn’t love me anymore?"
"You must not have been a good wife if Ayan wants this divorce," Grace said coldly.
"Whether we get divorced or stay together has nothing to do with your opinion, so there is no need for you to worry about it, sister."
"Do you think I want to control you?" Grace asked, her eyes red with emotion. She was upset that Camille had stolen Ayan from her. She could have been his wife. "If it wasn't for you, Ayan's wife would be me now. It's all your fault. Why did you come back when you were already gone?"
Camille remained calm and cold-faced, with slightly narrowed eyes and an indifferent expression as she responded: "Grace, you really impressed me with your coveting your own brother-in-law."
Grace was taken aback by Camille's response and couldn't find the words to respond.
"If you love Ayan so much," Camille continued, "you should go beg mother and father. Talking to me is useless." With that said, she gave Grace a distant gaze before getting into the car and driving away quickly.
Grace stood in the same spot for a moment before stomping hard on the ground in frustration. Her lips were tightly pursed as she watched Camille drive away; hatred filled her heart.
