Chapter 10 Stop Pretending
Nanci hesitated for three seconds, then adjusted her facial expression and jogged over to greet him.
"Edward, what a coincidence!"
"What are you doing here?" The man furrowed his brow, his gaze cold and his words devoid of warmth.
Nanci's head drooped sadly. "Since the divorce is near and I won't see Olivia again, I'd come to visit her," she said, her voice muffled.
"Are you disappointed that she didn't wake up?"
Nanci quickly looked up, only to meet his eyes full of mockery.
Oh, right. Sophie put the blame on her and said that it was she who had upset Olivia.
This wasn't the first time she had taken the blame for that mother and daughter, yet Edward believed it outright, which chilled her heart.
Her gaze dropped, hiding the icy despair in her eyes. "Indeed, very disappointed."
Edward snorted coldly, his angry eyes fixed on her as he said, "Considering three years of marriage, I can overlook your little schemes! But you should never have harmed Grandma! You better pray she is safe, or else..."
Listening to these mocking warnings, Nanci closed her eyes, reminding herself to stay calm.
But thinking about his betrayal and his aggressive tone, she couldn't hold back.
"Do you have any proof?"
Nanci looked up, seeing the cold severity and surprise in his eyes, and continued, "Do you have any evidence that I caused Olivia's condition? If not, I could sue you for defamation!"
The man examined her for a long moment, his expression complex, finally settling into a sarcastic smile.
"Do you need me to refer you to a lawyer?"
Nanci tugged at the corner of her mouth and defiantly retorted, "No need, but instead of threatening me, you might want to visit Olivia in the hospital! Once you're done, remember to find some time to finalize the divorce!"
Edward was caught off guard by her sudden outburst.
He watched her retreating figure, his brow furrowed, his lips tightly pursed.
This was the first time he had seen Nanci emotional.
Previously, she was so obedient and attentive. At his slightest gesture, she knew what he wanted.
Has she finally shown her true colors?
Isaac, who had witnessed the entire scene, chuckled dryly, "Miss Ross seems like a different person."
In Isaac's view, Nanci was a good wife who was docile and understanding, devoted to Edward without complaint.
But her stubborn demeanor now seemed like that of a stranger.
Edward still watched the direction Nanci had gone, scoffing coldly, his eyes full of chilling scorn, "She finally can't pretend anymore. I thought she was more capable!"
With that, he turned and walked towards the hospital.
As he reached the ICU, he heard the urgent beeping of the heart monitor.
A woman's panicked scream echoed, "Doctor! Someone help, please!"
The room was a flurry of activity with doctors and nurses rushing to provide urgent care.
Sophie and Elizabeth stood outside the hospital room.
Elizabeth reacted quickly. Seeing Edward approach, she immediately complained, "Look what that vile woman did! Olivia is so ill, yet Nanci still doesn't spare her! Sophie and I just arrived and saw her in the room. We don't know how long she had been there or what she had done!"
Edward's face was as cold as ice, his aura menacing.
Sophie also hurriedly added, "Edward, she holds a grudge against the Clarkson family! But Grandma was so kind to her. How could she be so heartless?"
"Divorcing that kind of woman is letting her off easy!"
"She should be thrown into jail!"
The mother and daughter incessantly condemned Nanci.
Edward clenched his fists tightly, veins bulging on the backs of his hands. He remembered Nanci's last words to him.
Her casual provocation almost made his teeth grit with rage!
She wanted evidence?
Wasn't this real, tangible evidence?
"Are you family members?" The doctor hurried out, removing his mask, a sigh of relief on his face.
Sophie hurried forward and said, "Doctor, you must save my grandmother! You said just yesterday that there was still a day's time. How could it have come to this? Grandma wouldn't have an accident for no reason. What exactly is going on?"
The doctor glanced at her, then at the two bodyguards standing upright at the door, finally resting his gaze on Edward.
"Mr. Clarkson, have you administered any other medications to the patient?"
Edward's heart sank.
Elizabeth and Sophie quickly exchanged a glance before replying, "We haven't given her anything! What medication has she taken? What effects could it cause? Is Grandma... Is she still with us?"
Their eagerness to prove their conjecture made them overlook the doctor's relaxed demeanor.
Hearing this, the doctor smiled slightly. "Don't worry. The patient is in good health."
Sophie and Elizabeth were baffled.
Edward's eyes also showed confusion.
"It's strange. Previously, what we could do was stabilize the patient's condition for three days. Just now, although there was a sudden cardiac arrest, we hadn't started resuscitation when all her vitals returned to normal."
The doctor was puzzled as he spoke about these developments.
Both Sophie and Elizabeth were stunned. Unable to contain herself, Sophie burst out, "Nonsense, you quack! It must have been a misdiagnosis before, and now what mysteries are you conjuring up!"
The doctor's expression darkened. "Miss Clarkson, watch your words. Why would I joke about such matters?"
He was the city's most authoritative cardiothoracic specialist and Olivia's primary physician. Even Edward was respectful in his presence, and yet this young woman dared to speak so.
"If you don't trust me, feel free to change your primary physician," he said, frowning coldly.
Sophie blushed in embarrassment and muttered, "I..."
"Sorry, Dr. North, she was just too worried," Edward said gravely, shooting a warning glance at Sophie before speaking again, "Can you determine what medication she took?"
Dr. North's expression was still stern, but respecting Edward's presence, he replied, "It's unclear what she had taken previously, but this time it's been no more than twenty-four hours. We'll know once the blood tests are back."
With that, he walked past them, back straight.
After Dr. North left, Sophie muttered under her breath, "So much for the most authoritative cardiac surgeon! If a single medication could stabilize the condition, why all this fuss..."
Feeling Edward's menacing gaze, Elizabeth tugged at Sophie.
Sophie reluctantly fell silent.
Soon, Dr. North excitedly returned with the report.
"Mr. Clarkson, do you have any connection with Dr. Lancy from Ross Clinic, or with the Ross family?"
Edward looked stunned.
Sophie, with a look of disdain, "The Ross family? We don't know the Ross family!"
"That's strange," murmured Dr. North.
"What's the matter?"
"This is a bold method of medication. No one but the Ross family would dare to attempt it!"
