Chapter 9 Delivering Medicine
Amelia, having just received the news, called Nanci and furiously berated the couple for half an hour. When her tirade subsided, she weakly asked, "Nanci, where did you get those photos?"
Nanci was speechless. "You think it was me?"
"Wasn't it?"
"Would I harm myself to hurt others? Do you think I’m a fool?"
Silence followed. It did make some sense.
"But now everyone, maybe even Edward, thinks you did it! How much must that jerk hate you? What if he hates you enough to leave you with nothing?"
"I've already agreed to leave with nothing!"
What on earth was going on?
That evening, Amelia, using the hacker alias “Q”, sent a message to Edward.
The early autumn night was cool.
In the study at Waterford, Edward, tall and upright, stood on the balcony, his cigarette flickering. Several butts were already in the clear ashtray beside him.
Tomorrow was the last day, and there had been no news from the hospital or Ross Clinic.
While he was worrying over this, his phone rang.
As he saw the caller ID, his eyes lit up, and he swiped to answer. "Any news?"
"Q says he has a message for you from Dr. Lancy."
"Dr. Lancy?"
A flicker of light crossed Edward's usually calm eyes, urgency evident. "What is it?"
After a few seconds of hesitation, the voice turned into a cold messenger, "Dr. Lancy asks, are you sure the problem is with your grandmother's heart, and not in your own head?"
The cigarette in Edward’s hand was crushed out of shape.
After a long silence, Edward suppressed the anger in his heart and gritted out, "Find Brian! Turn this city upside down if you have to!"
"Yes."
Brian awoke suddenly in his sleep.
He sat up abruptly, wiping the cold sweat from his forehead.
It was a nightmare. He dreamed that Edward had caught him and was interrogating him about Dr. Lancy's whereabouts.
He checked the date on his phone.
September 12th.
They didn't have much time left in this city.
This time, there were no technical difficulties. Alderley Industries' PR team effectively took down all the articles and pictures, abruptly ending the high-profile scandal overnight.
But that night, Edward suffered from insomnia, perhaps due to Dr. Lancy's hurtful rejection, or maybe due to Nanci's duplicity.
The next morning, Nanci arrived at the hospital early.
The VIP ward was heavily guarded.
Fortunately, aside from the bodyguards, no other Clarkson family members were present.
Nanci slipped into the room and looked at the emaciated old lady on the bed, her eyes welling up.
She took out the pills she had prepared herself, gently lifted Olivia, and fed them to her, following with sips of water.
Olivia was in bad shape, almost unconscious.
Administering the medicine left Nanci sweating profusely.
She could have left after finishing, but concerned, she waited another hour to ensure there were no adverse reactions before she finally relaxed.
Holding Olivia's frail hand, she said, "Olivia, thank you for your care over these past three years. I will find a way to cure your illness, but you must take care of yourself in the days to come..."
Nanci knew Olivia was too weak to open her eyes but could hear her speaking.
She gave a few more detailed instructions before softly saying goodbye. "Edward and I really aren't suitable. You are more open-minded than my grandpa, so please don't make it difficult for me."
As she stood up, she felt the warm, firm grip of a large hand on hers. Nanci paused for a moment, then bent down to pat the back of her hand, assuring, "I'll come to see you again next time. Goodbye, Olivia."
"Nanci! Grandma has been ruined by you, and you still have a nerve to come back!" A sharp voice rang out from behind her, followed by Sophie storming in angrily.
Nanci's eyes turned cold, but before she could speak, she heard Elizabeth's cold voice. "What is going on here? How can you let her in?"
These mother and daughter were truly her sworn enemies.
She took a deep breath, ignored them, and headed straight for the door.
"Stop right there!" Sophie grabbed her wrist.
Nanci glanced coldly at her, causing Sophie to suddenly remember a previous slap and instinctively let go. "How can you be so malicious? Grandma has been brought down by your actions. What else do you want?"
"You know best what really made Grandma sick," Nanci said coolly.
Sophie's eyes darted around, and her voice rose defensively. "What do you mean? Are you saying I made Grandma sick? Everyone knows how obsessed you are with my brother, and you came to complain to Grandma just to avoid a divorce! I'm telling you. Edward would never want a witch like you! You'd better give up and leave him alone."
Sophie spat out one venomous word after another.
Nanci was used to it and didn't pay much attention, but hearing the word “witch”, she slightly raised her eyebrows. The Ross family was best known for their expertise in poison.
In recent years, Ross Clinic had begun to rise to prominence.
Being called a “witch” wasn't entirely unfitting.
And having carried such a reputation, Nanci felt she might as well live up to the name.
She had initially headed out, but now she turned and walked towards Sophie.
Facing her smiling eyes, Sophie felt a bad premonition and stepped back half a step, asking in a trembling voice, "What? What are you up to? Are you going to hit me here? No wonder Edward hates you so much! Who will like a hypocritical and malicious woman like you? Just leave after the divorce and make room for Lisa!"
Nanci's gaze faltered. "Lisa?"
"Yes! Lisa! Edward likes her, and he's going to marry her!"
Nanci tilted her head, looking at her as a realization clicked in her mind.
No wonder Lisa was aware of her presence.
No wonder Lisa seemed so familiar with her.
It turned out she had already secretly sided with Sophie.
She smiled and patted Sophie on the shoulder, saying, "Don't worry. It will be as you wish soon."
Her movements were so swift that Sophie couldn't react.
It wasn't until Nanci had left the hospital room that Sophie disdainfully brushed off her shoulder.
"How dare she touch me?"
Elizabeth looked thoughtfully at Nanci's retreating figure before she spoke up, "Enough. Stop messing with her! It's okay if she agrees to the divorce. If she really starts to make trouble, it won't be easy to handle!"
Sophie scoffed, unimpressed, "As if she'd dare!"
As she spoke, Sophie twisted her shoulder and scratched it.
Suddenly, she felt a bit itchy but couldn't put her finger on it.
Today was indeed not Nanci's lucky day. Just as she left the hospital, she saw a familiar Rolls-Royce drive past and stop steadily in front of her.
The car door opened, and a tall, upright figure stepped out.
Though it was still the tail end of summer in September, the man's gaze was as chilling as the cold winter, sending shivers down her spine.
