Chapter 5

RUTH’S POV

I walked into Jackson’s study with a suitcase in my hand, my confidence owing to the fact that I had what he wanted, and he might as well give me what I desire. It’s been two months, I had to fake sickness, I had to lie that I was on my monthly flow, and all sorts of lies just to keep the baby safe. I can’t lose the baby else I lose the money.

When the doctor confirmed that it was successful and the baby was growing fine, happiness flooded my heart, but who would have thought that the woman would be more excited than I was? She quickly made a call, I was sure she was talking to her boss explaining how successful it was. We still had to watch the development of the baby for the next two months before the money was given to me. I had to wear baggy clothes, so the changes wouldn’t be very obvious, especially to Jackson.

Jackson raised his head to have a glimpse of who just interrupted him. When his gaze landed on me, he put down his pen, his usual smirk finding a place to settle on his face.

Silently, I moved closer and lowered the suitcase on his desk with a loud thud.

“This is what you require, here it is. I want my freedom back” I went straight to the point with no strings attached.

Slowly, he jolted forward, stretched his hand, and pulled the bag toward him, all these while he was looking at me. I did very well in keeping my anxiousness well tugged in. They’ve taught me a lot, and I’ve learned a lot from their so-called mafia world.

He unzipped the bag, looked at the contents inside, and then his gaze moved to me, to the content, and back to me.

“What is this?” He questioned.

‘I believe you are not blind’ I so badly wanted to speak out but to be on the safer side, I stuck to a polite response.

“Your money. It was what you wanted from my father, right? Here it is then, in exchange for my freedom”.

I don't know what was funny in the entire sentence I made, but the moment I closed my mouth, He busted out into a different series of annoying laughter which caused me to frown deeply in confusion. Did I perhaps say anything funny that I missed?

Nonetheless, I waited patiently for him to finalize what he was doing, and then we would continue the conversation that brought me to him in the first place.

“Come again, what do you say you wanted?” He asked, I was sure it wasn't because he didn't comprehend my words.

“This is your money” I pointed at the bag. “For my freedom”

“Where did you get this money, Ruthy?” he asked, his voice now cold.

I shrugged not ready to tell him anything, but he yelled throwing the items to the ground causing me to step back in shock.

“Do you think you can leave just like that because you have paid the debt? You are already in this world, you cannot leave! I own you, Ruthy. You cannot leave me! I own you!” Jackson screamed like a madman.

I froze in my spot, all I could think of right now was for me not to be hit by him. I was carrying a child and did not want to get beaten.

“Boss, Alpha, I didn’t say I was leaving,” I said stuttering, “I said I wished to pay the debt, so I don’t get to deliver coke anymore. I get beaten every time I go there” I lied through my teeth, giving him the puppy eyes.

Jackson sat back down before he began to smile at me, “Good, good”

Seeing that I had nothing else to do there, I said to him, “I'd like to take my leave now. I need to go bath and eat”.

Before he could say anymore, I dashed out. My heart beat very fast, knowing that the only way to leave here now was to escape. Jackson won't let me leave.

Walking as fast as my legs could carry me, I made my way to the living room ignoring the men in the bar.

“How did it go?” one of them asked with a chuckle, but I rolled my eyes at him, ignoring him.

“I said how did it get?” He dragged me to himself before throwing me across the living room. My hands shielded my stomach as I fell to the ground.

“Ahhhh!” I whined in pain as I protected my stomach. Nothing must happen to this baby and if I want it to remain that way, I have to get out of here immediately.

“When we talk to you, you listen and obey. You are still too young here to act arrogant. And to top it, you're just a weak omega!”

They laughed and began to insult me, but my gaze was on the door, my mind kept telling me to run, and I won't get caught. I know the circumstances if I did get caught.

Can I do this?

Before I could respond to myself, a shoe came flying from nowhere hitting my face, I covered my nose in pain. This answered the question and I stood up before taking off.

“She's trying to escape!” I heard someone say.

“Lock the gate, she is trying to escape!” I kept hearing their orders. I didn't stop even for a minute as I revealed the gun under my sweatshirt, I shot the guard by the gate before he could close the gate on me. I heard gunshots, but I had already run out of the compound.

This was it, there was no going back. Too much is at stake. My life, the baby, Mrs. Alicia, too much was at stake!

I made it outside and began to run with all my might down the pavement. It didn't take long for them to start following behind me. I needed to deviate or else I would get caught. Looking toward the busy road though at night, I changed my direction toward it, hoping a car wouldn't hit me as…..

“Ah….” That was the last thing I remembered saying.

I woke up in a hospital bed with a series of tubes in my hand.

“They have caught me” That was the first word that crossed my mind but the moment I looked around, my eyes landed on a figure I saw only once but couldn't forget the face.

Jackson’s rival. I knew instantly that I was free from his wretch.

“Who are you?” Though he was looking at his phone, he still asked me.

“No, who are you?” I wanted to ask, but I knew it wasn't the best idea. Instead, I opted to say, “I was held capt…..” and then I decided against it. Telling him the truth might end up costing me my freedom seeing as Jackson is his rival, he might as well consider me a rival too.

“I’m Ruth…”

“And…?” he asked, but his gaze was still on his phone.

“My husband died, the father of my child” I dropped my hand on my flat tummy. “I have no more reason to live too, you could have let me die”

Where that notion came from, I had no idea, but I went along with it anyway, even having tears for an extra effect.

His next words confirmed to me that he bought my words as he looked at me,

“I am deeply sorry about that, of course, you have a reason to live, you have your child and I will give you a home”
