Chapter 12
I saw him jump over me. I didn't take the chance to turn around to see him, I started running as fast as I could through the forest, on all fours. I didn't want him to follow me under any circumstances.
And it seemed like my little prayer had been answered because I didn't see him chasing me when I ventured to turn my head. On the contrary, the forest was oddly too quiet. This kind of silence before the storm... It looked funny like that. But that didn't stop me from stopping, I didn't want him to come back.
What if he was ahead of me and I was going straight into the mouth of the wolf?
That's when the big beast, the werewolf, appeared in front of me, fangs out.
He made a lunge to jump on me, but I quickly shifted to the right before he sank his fangs into my pretty white fur. I would never have succeeded in doing that, I had been too fast. It was probably a survival reflex. The adrenaline was in me, I felt it right away.
I took advantage of this moment to get back to running. I ran as fast as I could. I could hear his grunts behind me and his snapping jaws.
Suddenly, I heard loud voices. People were nearby and I was heading straight for them with a werewolf following me.
I directed the beast to its sideboard.
Or not.
I wanted to change direction, but it was too late, I had just come out of the woods. Under the questioning looks of the young teenagers who had stopped all activity and who were looking at me, I wanted to tell them to run away, but what came out was only a wolf's squeak. Why can't I speak? Everyone from Forest Dawn had gathered here for the full moon and here I appeared out of nowhere in my wolf form. Then suddenly, I saw the werewolf come out of the wood with a huge howl, followed by a multitude of frightened cries. He was salivating in front of all these people.
This was all my fault, he had to leave without hurting anyone, but how?
I didn't even have time to think before it evaporated like a cloud of smoke.
Everyone was silent, then they started staring at me. Me, I blinked to be sure of what I had just seen. A werewolf disappeared into mist!
Then, remembering that everyone was staring at me, I took a few steps back. I wanted to return to my original form, but it was impossible. I wasn't focused enough with all those eyes on me and besides, I was just a beginner.
But did anyone even know that it was me, Ruby Anderson, hiding under this white wolf guise?
I tried again to shapeshift again, but to no avail. However, it wasn't that difficult the last time! Maybe I had beginner's luck.
Then a few people started whispering.
-There are still wolves left in the forest of Forest Dawn?
-He may have been afraid of the weres and came out of the woods, said another.
Unable to get out of this damn wolf guise, I fled down the trail, praying no one would follow me.
Chloe's POV
I walked alone on the trail to join the group who wanted to see the transformation of the weres. Ruby had gone to look for something in her bungalow so I found myself alone on the trail. I finally saw the group of people in the distance.
Melissa was giving some safety instructions to the teens. What she can be mother hen that one. We all knew that you shouldn't walk in the forest during the full moon, especially if you were alone.
Everyone was chatting to each other when we all heard a huge Were howl. Shortly after, a white wolf came out of the woods. He looked scared, very scared.
Everyone was silent. And suddenly, a huge werewolf emerges from the woods as well. Followed by the same howl from earlier.
A few girls screamed as he lunged at the group, but before he could hit anyone, he vanished into mist. Poof! Evaporated.
I rested my gaze on the white wolf who was staring at an invisible point. He began to look at the crowd who began to whisper.
-There are still wolves left in the forest of Forest Dawn?
'Maybe he got scared of the Weres and came out of the woods,' another said.
Then the magnificent beast set off down the path.
And I remembered that Ruby still wasn't there. What if she saw the wolf and freaked out? Or maybe she was here, but she hadn't seen me. I began to look for her among the group of teenagers.
But I didn't really have time to look for it.
-Ok everyone, I would like us to join all our bungalows. There were enough strange things happening tonight, Melissa tells us.
Ruby POV
I had gone far enough along the path leading to the bungalows so that almost no one saw me. I saw a bungalow which seemed empty to me and I went to the porch and then went to bed there. Still in my wolf form. I couldn't even be myself again. Maybe if I slept a little, I would easily return to my human form.
-Hey, look! It's the white wolf from earlier! Said a voice.
