Chapter 13: The Eccentric Family

Pansy looked at the array of fine items scattered around and pursed her lips, saying, "Don't think you can make up for your disgraceful actions by buying me some trinkets! Even if you're not ashamed, I am! Felicia's fiancé and his family are coming over tomorrow. If anything goes wrong, all of you will be kicked out of the Robson family! The Robson family cannot afford to be ashamed like this!"

Claire didn't want to listen to her grandmother's scolding anymore, but she hadn't yet accomplished the purpose of her visit today.

Taking a deep breath, Claire said, "Grandmother, I came back this time to discuss my marriage with you. These items were bought by your future grandson-in-law to show his respect. The person just now was his driver."

With one sentence, Claire both provoked her grandmother's anger and completely extinguished it.

A grandson-in-law who could afford such expensive items and even had a driver was definitely wealthier than Samuel.

Pansy's eyes flickered as she made her calculations.

"This child is really considerate. But discussing marriage matters requires both parents to be present, doesn't it? Surely the other side understands this basic courtesy?" Pansy's eyes never left the gifts scattered on the floor.

"Yes, I just came back to discuss it with the family first. I'm sure it won't be long before they come to visit," Claire replied with her head lowered.

Standing nearby, her cousin Felicia Robson suddenly interjected, "This man is really generous! Claire, you sure have some skills, landing a rich guy in such a short time. I wonder if this future brother-in-law is a balding uncle or a flat-nosed ugly man?"

"You'll see when he comes," Claire retorted coldly.

Although A wasn't present in the room, he heard everything through Felicia's chatter.

A reported everything that happened to Miles.

Miles looked at the information sent by A, his eyes flickering with an unreadable expression.

Miles directly called A and listened to everything happening in the room.

Inside the room, Claire's response left Felicia fuming.

"Grandmother, if Claire is getting married, then I want to get married too! Besides, marriage should follow the order of who comes first, right? My fiancé is coming over tomorrow! Grandmother, you promised me that I would get married first! All the dowry prepared by the family is for me, it can't be given to Claire!" Felicia turned and clung to Pansy, acting spoiled and afraid that Claire's marriage would take away her dowry.

Pansy was indeed biased.

Hearing Felicia's words, she said to Claire, "Claire, since your boyfriend's family is so wealthy, you shouldn't care about this little dowry. As the elder sister, you shouldn't compete with your younger sister. This dowry was saved up by your Uncle Gilbert and Aunt Camille over many years."

Claire sneered inwardly but maintained a calm face as she replied, "I never intended to compete with Felicia."

She had no interest in anything from the Robson family!

"That's good. Felicia's fiancé's family is coming tomorrow. Since you don't have much to do, help your mother with the chores so that the Robson family doesn't be ashamed and Felicia can marry well," Pansy said contentedly. "Felicia has never done any chores since she was young, she wouldn't do them well anyway! As her elder sister, you should help her out."

The dowry she prepared for Felicia naturally couldn't be shared with Claire. How could an adopted child deserve even a penny of it?

Claire sneered inwardly. Did she really have a choice not to do these chores?

She had seen through every member of this family—they were all leeches!

They wouldn't stop until they had completely squeezed her and her mother dry.

A diligently reported everything happening in the room to Miles. Holding a wine glass and gently swirling its contents, Miles said over the phone, "How can she appear less impressive than others? Make sure everything is grand tomorrow!"

The next day, before dawn, Claire and her mother were woken up by Pansy to clean the yard in preparation for the guests.

Claire didn't say a word, silently getting up to wash her face and help her mother with the chores.

If she didn't help with these tasks, they would all fall on her mother's shoulders.

None of the people in the house came out to help, even though it was Felicia's fiancé's family coming over for the proposal. Neither Gilbert nor Aunt Camille showed any intention of getting up early to prepare.

If things went well, it would be their glory.

If things went wrong, it would all be Darlene's fault.

Claire had long seen through this family's true nature. If it weren't for her mother's insistence on staying in this house, she would have taken her away from this place long ago!

Just as Claire put down the mop, the sound of firecrackers erupted outside.

It seemed they wanted to announce their arrival to the whole world just for a marriage proposal.

Pansy rushed out of the house like a gust of wind and pointed at Claire, saying, "What are you standing there for? Go greet the guests!"
