Chapter 8: Am I an Experiment?

Carlos, an authority in internal medicine, regarded traditional acupuncture as a kind of trickery.

He watched in disbelief as Leo inserted nine needles into the old man's chest.

Three seconds later, the old man's body convulsed. Leo quickly removed the oxygen mask from his face.

The old man turned his head and vomited a mouthful of black blood.

His chest rose and fell rapidly before his breathing returned to normal.

Everyone in the room was frozen in astonishment as they saw this.

If the restoration of the old man's heartbeat had been the first miracle, the return of his breathing was the second.

Leo removed the silver needles from the old man's chest, wiped the sweat from his brow, and looked at Harry. "He's stabilized."

Harry was full of gratitude as he watched Leo save his father.

"Young man, I was a fool. I almost killed my own father!" Harry slapped himself hard.

"Harry, don't do that." Venus quickly grabbed his hand.

Once Harry calmed down, he turned to Leo. "What's your name, young man?"

"Leo."

"Leo, I'm Harry. I'm sorry for doubting you. Please forgive my ignorance."

"Mr. Toby, there's no need for that. I understand your situation," Leo said kindly. "Although I've stabilized your father, he'll need two more acupuncture sessions before he can get out of bed. I'll return tomorrow at noon for the next treatment. And now, I'll take my leave."

With that, Leo headed for the door.

Carlos watched Leo's back with a complex expression. He couldn't believe he had witnessed such a medical miracle from someone so young.

Although his reputation had taken a hit, seeing the wonders of Atrarian medicine made it worthwhile.

Just then, Venus stopped Leo. She suddenly remembered something.

"Leo, wait. Give me your bank account details."

Leo turned back. "Miss Toby, there's no rush. Pay me after I've fully cured your father."

"Alright, we'll see you tomorrow at noon," Venus said gratefully.

Leo pushed open the door and stepped out. The four people outside immediately focused on him.

"Leo, did you... did you save that man?" Sophia asked in disbelief. If she hadn't seen it herself, she wouldn't have believed Leo could heal anyone.

How had he suddenly gained medical skills? Had he secretly attended traditional medicine classes during his four years as her husband?

But it didn't make sense. Leo had been staying at home for all four years, cooking, doing laundry, and playing games.

Leo suddenly became so strange to Sophia.

Leo just nodded. "Let's go home."

Jessica and Tina were as astonished as Sophia. They couldn't understand what had happened to Leo today, but they were relieved because the situation was resolved perfectly.

Gilbert, however, didn't return with them. Having just returned to Langstel, he needed his father to introduce him to some important people and pave his way for the future.

Watching Leo disappear around the corner, Gilbert sneered. "Leo, you have luck on your side, but I'll make sure you fall. Just wait and see."

Forty minutes later, the Mercedes pulled into Sunshine Star City Villa District and stopped in front of the Henley family's villa.

Sophia and the others got out, and Leo parked the car in the garage.

Inside the villa, Sophia's father, Martin Henley, was sitting on the sofa, drinking coffee and reading the newspaper.

Martin had once worked in tax, but after retiring, he co-founded a company that went public ten years later. Now, he held a five percent stake, earning substantial dividends each year though he didn't have to manage the company.

"Dad, we're back!" Tina called out as she headed upstairs.

Martin put down his newspaper and looked at Jessica. "Where were you? I heard something happened at Sophia's company. What's the situation now?"

"Thanks to your son-in-law, the issue was resolved," Jessica replied, taking a sip of water.

"Oh? What happened?" Martin glanced at Leo.

Jessica briefly explained the events to Martin.

Curious, Martin asked, "Leo, when did you learn medicine?"

"I don't really know medicine. I've just read a few books on traditional medicine over the past couple of years," Leo replied, not revealing the truth.

Sophia interjected, "Dad, he just got lucky today. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes. He is not really a doctor."

Martin nodded. He thought he knew his son-in-law very well. Leo didn't seem to be that capable. "Leo, go make dinner."

Leo said nothing more and headed to the kitchen.

For the past four years, he had handled all the household chores and cooking. Rather than being the Henley family's son-in-law, he was more like their servant.

Leo had made up his mind. Once he cured Harry's father and received his first substantial payment, he would divorce Sophia and leave the Henley family to start a new life.

After dinner, as usual, Leo went back to his bedroom to avoid bothering the Henley family. He planned to experiment with the mysterious energy inside him to see what other uses it might have.

Just then, his phone rang.

It was a number starting with an uncommon number, clearly a virtual number dialed over the internet.

Leo hung up.

The phone rang again from the same number.

Leo hung up again.

When it rang a third time, Leo answered, ready to curse whoever it was. But the voice on the other end froze him.

"Leo, do you remember me?" A raspy, deep voice spoke.

"It's you!" Leo would never forget the person who had injected him with something that caused him three years of agony.

"Congratulations on surviving," the person on the other end said with unpleasant laughter.

"What do you mean?"

"Out of all the experimental subjects, you're the only one who survived after three years."

"Experimental subject?" A sense of dread filled Leo.

"Don't be afraid. Since you survived, it means luck is on your side. You must have used the energy inside you by now. Do you feel it's diminished a bit?"
