chapter 2 : rejection
* 3 years ago *
Everyone was rushing out of the pack house the moment they heard that their future Alpha has arrived. It was as if he was a celebrity.
I felt like I was part of a flock of sheep moving together. Since Courtney and I were among the last to step out of the pack house, we couldn't see properly.
By the murmuring of the pack members around us, it was clear that Damien had stepped out of the car and was now talking to the current Beta, which is Courtney's Dad.
We couldn't hear anything, as we stood too far away from them, but I could clearly tell Damien was tense. It wasn't like he was a social person. I had this nagging feeling inside me that something was going to happen today and not in a good way either.
My thoughts were cut-off by Courtney saying "What are we waiting for. Let's head to the front to get a good look. I bet he's has gotten even hotter seeing how these girls are screaming." I just nod my head and look around us.
Sure there are many girls, mainly teens pulling their skirts up or tugging their tops down so their cleavage was visible, I shake my head at their actions.
Courtney grabs my wrist and steers our way to the front of the crowd, dodging people on the way and we make it to the front.
It would be a lie if I said he hadn't gotten hotter, but I would prefer the term more handsome. His muscles have gotten even bigger than the last time I saw him though.
He has a lean built, which I prefer, and his chest had broadened and his t-shirt was tight over his chest. His legs are strongly built and his shoulder muscles tense with his movements. I bet he would be more handsome in person than he looked from afar.
My wolf has been nagging at me and trying to tell me something the moment I stepped out of the pack house but I brush it off as nervous jitters of seeing my long time crush after so long.
It's as if he had just remembered the presence of rest of the pack. He turned around and moves his eyes over the crowd as if searching for something. When his eyes stop at me, he stares me in the eyes and I hear my wolf shouting something.
“MATE! MATE! Go to our mate!” she yells in my head and my eyes widen with shock and happiness.
I thought my mate would be happy to see me, but I guess not. His face remains impassive, although for a fleeting moment, I saw some emotion cross his eyes and then they're blank just like his soul.
All my life I've been preparing for the possibility that my mate might reject me but I wasn't prepared for the pain that came over me and my wolf. She whimpers. “Mate doesn't want us.”
I thought my mate would at least acknowledge me. But no, none of that happened. It hurts so much knowing that even the one destined for me by the moon goddess herself doesn't want me. I think as tears well up in my eyes and I look down in sadness.
Mates were precious. At least that was what we were taught. It was said that our souls were the equal halves of each other, which fit like two pieces of a puzzle. When a werewolf comes of age, he or she finds their equal halves and feels whole.
The moment I look up, I spot Emily coming forward and the crowd parts for her. She moves gracefully towards him with a smile on her face and when he meets her eyes, his eyes lit up like fairy lights.
There is a sparkle in his eyes that shows us that he genuinely loves her and she stands upon her tippy toes to meet his towering height and pecks him on his lips. He decides to lift his eyes and look at me the exact moment their lips touch in a passionate kiss.
It was as if he was making a statement.
I break my stare and look towards my feet. My wolf keeps whimpering in my head. It is starting to give me a headache. I choose to block her out for the time period.
It hurt so bad seeing their inter-action and how he just basically and indirectly rejected me by ignoring my presence and locking lips with someone other than his mate, who happens to be me.
I turn away from the couple and move toward the pack house. I can feel myself close to tearing up but I don't let my tears fall at least until I make my way towards my room.
The moment I reach my room it's like a dam has broken, tears start falling freely as I lay on my bed.
"He is your mate, isn't he?" Someone suddenly says and I snap my head towards the voice and find Courtney standing there with a mixture of sadness and anger on her face. I nod my head and Courtney sighs. I cannot hide anything from her for the life of me.
"How can he not acknowledge his own mate for someone else? If Alex did that to me, I would make sure that he doesn't have kids in the future." A smile breaks out on my face and Courtney seeing this gives me one of her own.
She has always been my rock and has helped me when I was at my lowest. She has shared my happiness and she clearly knows how to make me smile at time likes this. I'm so thankful for having her as my best friend. But the moment I realize the situation at hand, my smile drops.
"He doesn't want me Court." I say as the tears start falling again.
"Hush girl. We are not talking about your asshole of a mate for now and we’re going to do this my way. We are going to have a girl’s night. You know in those teen stories where the girl ends up having a movie marathon with her best friend's when her boyfriend cheats on her or something." She says with a scrunching her face up as if it leaves a bad taste in her mouth to say so. I contemplate it for a second and reply "okay".

* Few hours later *
It's been a few hours since the incident and Courtney and I have binged watched the Orange is the new Black. I feel grateful for this moment and enjoyed it. I ended up forgetting about my mate for the time period just like Courtney said.
I have just come down to the kitchen to fetch some water as my throat feels parched. I was about to open the fridge when I felt this prickling feeling on my back as if someone was staring at me. I turn around, but I don’t see anyone. I turn back around and continue.
As I was about to reach for the water bottle, someone grabbed my wrist and starts dragging me somewhere.
It all happened so fast, that I couldn't react and by the tingles shooting up my arms I knew that it was him, my mate and our future Alpha Damien.
He drags me into the supply room and pushes my back onto the wall. I close my eyes trying to shake away the pain and after a moment, I open my eyes and look at my mate with teary eyes.
The only thing I could see, even with my enhanced sight due to the darkness, was his eyes. They were a stormy grey with specks of black and a mix of a slight red in them, which is odd but beautiful on him.
I was brought out of my trance by hearing him say the words I dreaded the most. "I Damien Blackwood, the future Alpha of Midnight Moon Pack reject you Serenity Martins as my mate and future Luna.”
It was as if my world had crumpled before my eyes and my wolf kept whimpering in my head. Tears welled up in my eyes but I keep them at bay and reply "I Serenity Martins accept your rejection as your mate and future Luna of The Midnight Moon pack.”
I saw shock crossing his features. He was not expecting me to accept his rejection but he quickly masks it and his eyes harden. The next thing I know I'm standing alone by myself.
The pain hits hard at that moment and I slid down the wall as a rogue tear falls.
