Chapter Five
Chapter 5.
Ding!
The phone rang loudly.
Gabriel gazed out of his office window, his brows furrowed as he wondered who might be calling.
He ignored it, his eyes fixed on the work before him.
DING!
The phone rang louder this time.
Reluctantly, he picked up the phone, and the ticking of the wall clock filled his ears.
"Alpha." A familiar and sharp voice boomed at the other end.
"Why the call at such an odd hour, Jackson." Gabriel pointed out, he glanced at the open laptop in front of him, his eyes scanning a document that was in view.
"It's an emergency, Alpha."
"An emergency?"
"Yes Alpha, it's a serious situation on the ground and your attention is greatly needed by the pack."
Gabriel sighed.
"I am at the office, Jackson. You know how much I hate being disturbed when working. Why can't it wait after work hours? We both know how important my time is over here, time is money, man, I don't joke with it." He said all at once, already losing his patience.
"I wish I could, but this is a matter of a human getting killed. We don't want to create a state of panic among humans. You know how hard we have tried for years to keep our identity and that of our pack away from them. If this escalates, I smell trouble, Alpha."
At once, Gabriel stood on his feet. His well tailored expensive suit lay elegantly on his body. His eyes were as sharp as ever, deep worry appeared on his forehead and his blood ran hot.
"Death?"
"Yes, Alpha."
"What's going on, Jackson? How does the death of a human relate to our being? Humans fucking die every day in this city." Gabriel pointed out firmly as many thoughts traveled through his head.
"This isn't just any death. A group of werewolves killed a human, a man. I was fast enough to get the information as quickly as possible. Immediately, I and some other wolves went to the scene and cleared the decapitated body parts. It was indeed a gruesome sight that's why we need you right now at the pack."
Anger arose in him.
There have always been rules guiding each pack. Rules that enabled them to live peacefully with humans, it's been years since humans were killed by werewolves so hearing such news rendered him angry.
"Who is the culprit?" Gabriel inquired.
"Right now, no information concerning the culprit is given. At the look of the scene, I am certain that this killing wasn't done by one wolf. I am certain that they might be more than we expect."
Gabriel breathed hard and loud. His dark hazel eyes were ready to kill the disobedient werewolf.
He couldn't believe it.
A human killed?
Years ago, humans and werewolves were sworn enemies but after creating peace between both worlds, werewolves made sure to keep their id hidden from mere humans.
"Do you think the culprit will be from our pack?" Jackson suddenly asked, breaking Gabriel's thoughts.
"He better not be. If the culprit should be from us, then he will pay with his blood, an eye for an eye!" Gabriel asserted sternly.
Ever since he was made alpha after the demise of his father. Gabriel made sure to maintain the pack and set rules that would guide each wolf's footsteps.
"What is the number one rule?" Gabriell asked. He tightened his left hand in a fist and held the phone in the other.
"Never kill a human," Jackson responded.
"And the werewolf chose to disobey my rule. I bet you Jackson, the beast will choose not to have been born than the death he will be cast on."
A knock on the door interrupted me.
"Jackson, I will be there in a few minutes. Just gather everyone and make sure you don't spill this information to anyone until I come."
"I will do so, alpha." At once, the car came to an end.
"Come in." Gabriel gestured and his secretary came in.
"Have you cleared your desk?" Gabriel asked not looking at her, his mind was greatly occupied.
"Yes sir, I will leave the company soon."
"So why are you here?" He fired.
Stunned at her boss' behavior, Fiona gulped down hard, her fingers wrapped around a file of documents.
"Nothing sir. I came to inform you that your new assistant will be here soon, she just called to make that notice."
Gabriel has already forgotten that he has an interview with his new assistant. He should have done it that morning but the situation on the ground is more important.
"Don't leave yet?"
Her eyes beamed with surprise, "Do you mean I can keep my joy?"
Gabriel frowned.
"No way. You are fired and nothing is changing my mind about it. All I need from you is to wait for the assistant to arrive, inform her that I am not around at the moment and she should wait till I am back. I have a very important place to be in at the moment and I can't afford to miss it."
"Okay sir, I will do just that."
"Good."
"I will pay you for your extra time, so you won't have anything to worry about. One of the company cars will take you home."
"Thank you, sir."
Gabriel nodded and picked up his car keys. He adjusted his necktie, his mind still unable to process the fact that a human was killed by a werewolf.
"Unbelievable." He muttered to himself, placed the keys in his pocket, and walked out of his office.
Gabriel headed towards the elevator, he glanced at his watch countless times. Soon, he got out of the restroom and began to head towards the exit door.
"Good day, sir" one of his workers acknowledged but Gabriel paid no attention.
"Jackson should better not be pulling my legs, I don't……"
At once, he hit a lady next to him so hard that she fell to the ground.
"Oh no!" He heard her mutter in shock as the cup of coffee in her hand poured all over her dress.
Paying no attention to the lady, Gabriel walked past her and out of the building, heading towards the car park.
"Fuck! How dare he knock me over and not say a word! Who is that proud fool!" Lelia cursed with so much rage in her.
No way will she let this slide no matter how late she might be to meet her boss.
"Excuse me!" She stood on her feet and ran towards Gabriel.
