CHAPTER FOUR
ALORA’S POV.
When I said I’d rather spend the night in the woods and risk getting eaten by rogues, I lied.
Yes, I hate my life and would love for it to end, but I don’t want to have such a gruesome death. I don’t want to die by having my body parts torn apart piece by piece by ugly, vicious rogues. I haven’t done anything to warrant such a gruesome death.
Adrenaline spikes up in my blood, raising my heart rate to a critical level. The flight, fight and fright response take over me, but at the moment, I’m too weak to fight and I definitely cannot outrun three werewolves. Fear is shooting down my spine like bullets from an AK 47.
Trembling violently, I slowly pace backwards, but as I do that, the wolves start pacing forward as well and this time around they are growling.
My heart misses a beat when my body hits hard against a rough surface behind and when I turn to give a quick peep at what it is, I notice it’s a tree. Right now, I’m leaning helplessly against a tree trunk and there appears to be nothing I can do to defend myself.
Soft sobs escape my lips as the wolves inch closer to me. Slowly, I slide against the tree, to the ground where I curl my knees up to my chest and press my head against them with my eyes closed, waiting for my doom to befall me.
A loud howl from nearby makes me burst into tears. It’s surely another rogue wolf coming to join the others, but the sound of a loud painful growl catches my attention. I quickly lift my head from my knees and shock fills my entire being when I see a big, white wolf, a wolf three times bigger than the three rogues each, tearing one of the rogues apart.
I watch in fascination as the big white wolf kills all three rogues within seconds by mercilessly tearing their heads from their bodies. When he’s done, he turns over to me with blood smeared over his mouth and his eyes are not the usual yellow, but red with anger.
"Don't you dare move from there. Wait for me.” The wolf mind links me before taking a turn behind a nearby tree trunk. My eyes shoot open in shock and my heart starts hammering so hard, I think it’s going to crash out of my chest. My mind is in total disarray because I know the wolf that just saved me is nothing but an Alpha wolf.
That size, speed and strength screams Alpha energy.
There happens to be just one Alpha in this pack and that’s no one else but Alpha Myles Leroy, my mate who rejected me barely minutes after we met. The look I saw in his eyes as he rejected me was one of pure hatred and disgust. He didn’t look like someone who would be inclined to save me if I was ever in danger. If asked, I would have said he’d stand by and let me die so he can go about his life like he never had a mate any way.
Yet one detail has me baffled. I can still smell him as my mate and I can still feel a mate-bond with him which is not supposed to be so because he rejected me and I accepted his rejection. I’m not supposed to be able to perceive his smell anymore, neither am I supposed to feel this deep connection with him.
“You almost got yourself killed.” The same deep voice that had ordered me to stay still questions from behind and I jump in fright as I turn to look at the person. My eyes are greeted by the sight of a bewitchingly handsome young man standing in all his glory at a small distance before me, fully clad in an all-black outfit, with hands crossed behind his back. My jaw drops when I realise the person is not Alpha Myles Leroy. My heart jumps in my chest, my face pulls together in disbelief when I actually recognize who he is.
That’s Alpha Jayce Connor of the Supreme Crescent Pack.
The Lord Alpha of the entire werewolf world. The Alpha of all Alphas. The most highly respected individual in the entire werewolf world. My heart soars and plummets and I stand there, confused as to whether to fall on my knees OR face flat on the ground to greet him.
The sound of dry leaves ruffling and footsteps approaching nearly makes me combust. I also notice that the more he comes closer, the stronger the sweet smell I perceive from him gets. Even the strong connection I feel towards him deepens.
What is going on here?
Just like Alpha Myles this morning, the Supreme Alpha stops in front of me, leans towards my ear and sniffs my skin.
“Mine.” He growls and my entire being is thrown into a state of pant-shuddering panic.
Mine?
What the hell does he mean by that?
“Mine.” He repeats the word and I drag my confused eyes up to his face. “You are my mate.” Unlike the stone-cold look Alpha Myles wore when he said those exact same words this morning, this Alpha has a soft expression on his face. His eyes are kind and humble and he even has the courtesy to smile.
And he’s so handsome, Alpha Myles doesn’t even come close.
“Can’t you feel the mate bond?” He asks calmly, softly and I shake my head. Not because I can’t feel it, but because I can’t believe what’s going on.
I just found my mate this morning. How come I can smell and feel another mate bond with another man right now?
“How… how is this possible?” I ask, my face searching his face in confusion. Right now, I’m not only perplexed, but scared.
If this man truly is my mate, it means I have to go through another rejection right now.
He’s the fucking Supreme Alpha of the entire werewolf world. His rank is a million times higher than Alpha Myles’. The moment he finds out he’s mated to a mere servant; he’s going to lose it.
Heck!
He’s going to kill me and no one is going to have the balls to question his actions.
“What do you mean?” His voice is still very calm and subtle. He’s still staring at me sweetly, with his kind ocean blue eyes. His dark hair is almost shimmering like silver in the darkness and he smells so good! Goddess! He smells so good, I feel like shoving him into my mouth whole.
What is this sick game the Moon goddess is playing at?
Sending two powerful men my way just so they can resent and reject me?
Is that her way of letting me know that I’m the most despised of all her creations?
“I…I uh…” I stutter nervously. “But I found my mate this morning. He’s the Alpha of this pack.” I tell him, my eyes still searching his face for what I do not know. Confusion flashes in his deep blue eyes. A ridge forms between his brows as he creases them. He pips his head, staring deep into my eyes, studying them in an entirely new way.
If he keeps staring at me like that, my face will catch flames and my entire body will explode like a dynamite.
That stare alone is doing things to my body. Things I have never felt before. Things I do not understand and I cannot decide whether I like it or not.
“You mean to tell me you are mated to Alpha Myles Leroy”
“Yes!” I answer quickly, firmly. The look he sends my way makes me understand he doesn’t believe me.
“If you are mated to the Alpha of this Pack, what are you doing out here at this time, all by yourself and almost getting eaten by rogues?”
“He rejected me.”
“Wait… you mean to tell me you found your mate this morning who happens to be Alpha Myles Leroy and he rejected you?”
“I know it sounds unbelievable, but that’s the truth. I don’t have the balls to lie to you, My Lord.”
He sighs lightly.
“Then that explains our mate bond. Don’t you feel a connection with me?”
“I do! Very much.” My voice comes out stronger than I intended it to.
“Your mate rejected you and so the Moon goddess sent me to you as your second chance mate. We are now mates and that’s all that matters. I’m taking you away from here, but before that, I need to see that moron.” Before I know it, he has his fingers wrapped around my left wrist and he’s leading the way forward. I stop and pull my hand from his hold.
I don’t know where I got the audacity to do that, but I just did. The man stops and turns to me, his eyes asking me what the hell my problem is. I start shaking my head.
“I can’t go there. Alpha Myles said he never wants to see my face again. I’ll be in big trouble if I show up at his castle with you.” I suck in a deep breath and watch as his eyes turn red. A familiar emotion flashes in them, making me shiver on my spot.
“An ordinary Alpha like Myles will need to have balls of steel to attempt to harm you in my presence. You have nothing to be worried about.” His words of assurance instantly calm my raging nerves. His sincere eyes and warm stare are enough to make me understand that he means every word he just said. I reluctantly nod my head and when he holds my hand this time around, I don’t resist or try to release myself from his hold. Like the obedient servant I’ve been all my life, I let him take the lead of getting us out of the woods.
He might be a serial killer who has managed to pull off an impeccable disguise as the Supreme Alpha to deceive me. He might be leading me to my doom. Maybe these are the last moments of my life. Everything can go wrong as much as they can go right from here, with this man, in these woods. But what I find oddly baffling is the fact that I trust him. I’ve known him for barely twenty minutes, but I trust him more than I’ve ever trusted anyone in my entire life.
So, if his plan is to kill me somewhere in these woods, I will die a happy woman.
But if he’s truly taking me to Alpha Myles’ castle, then I cannot wait to see the look on Alpha Myles’ face when he finds out that I have a second chance mate who happens to be the Supreme Alpha.
