CHAPTER FIVE
CHAPTER FIVE.
There are times when I wish the ground would open up and swallow me so I don’t have to deal with a particular situation. Now is one of those times. I’d wear the badge of cowardice with my head held high and a bright smile on my face. I will give anything not to be in Alpha Myles’ living room, sitting on one of his sofas, while waiting for him to show up.
Lord Alpha Jayce is not sitting down with me. He has been restlessly pacing about the length of the sitting area since the moment the maid went to get Alpha Myles.
Some intense drama is about to go down in this living room and I will be directly involved in it. My palms are sweaty. My heart is beating in my throat.
I’m nervous. God, I’m so nervous, I might die.
“Lord Alpha.” The sound of Alpha Myles’ voice spreads like poison in my stomach. I quickly haul myself from the couch I’m sitting on and bow my head.
Alpha Jayce is silent. I’m silent. The only sound that can be heard in the living room is that of footsteps descending the staircase. My soul jumps out of my body when I look up and see Alpha Myles gracefully walking down with my Mistress Daphne, a few steps behind him. I quickly look away and plaster my gaze back on the floor, my heart beating even harder.
What the hell is she doing here? Wasn’t she at home when I left?
This is going to get way bloodier than I thought it would.
Goddess, save my poor soul.
When they finally arrive downstairs, they stop a few metres away from the Lord Alpha and humbly bow down before him.
“It is always an honour to be graced with your presence in my castle, My Lord Alpha. I am dying to know to what I owe the pleasure of your unexpected, yet pleasant visit in my castle at this time of the night.” Alpha Myles says in a formal tone. As usual, Daphne is staring daggers at me.
If I’m to have a one-on-one encounter with her after this, she’s definitely going to stab me with a knife or shoot me with a gun. Her scorching gaze is heating up my skin at the speed of light. I won’t be surprised if it suddenly catches flames right now.
“A fool. A big fool. That’s what you are.” Alpha Jayce’s cold words slice through the atmosphere, making it bleed tension into my already dying heart.
“My Lord…” Alpha Myles chuckles lightly. He looks so confused, it’s almost fun to watch. “I’m not sure I understand what you mean by that.”
“Do you know the gravity of what you just did? Are you ready to face the consequences of your drastic actions?”
“My…”
“How dare you reject the mate chosen for you by the Moon goddess. As an Alpha, do you have any idea how fucked your life is right now?”
Alpha Myles’ scoffs in derision. I flinch when he shoots a fierce look my way before settling his gaze back on the no-nonsense looking Alpha.
“I don’t think the Moon goddess was fair to begin with. I’m an Alpha for goodness’ sake. How could she pair a man of my calibre with some lowborn piece of shit? Take a look at her.” He nods my way. Alpha Jayce looks at me. “Does she look qualified to be mated to someone like me? Does she deserve to be the next Luna of this pack?” Alpha Jayce shakes his head and takes a step back as if trying to hold himself back from doing something uncalled for.
His kind eyes have turned into something very unkind. They are so dark with rage; I fear he might snap Myles’s neck if he doesn’t stop talking shit about me.
As much as I’m terrified about what’s going on, I’m excited. It feels really good to have someone defend me for once and the first person who had to do that happened to be the Lord Alpha. What an interesting run of events.
“You have no idea the bad luck you just brought upon yourself.”
“I don’t think so, My Lord. If you were to ask me, I’d say I eradicated every bad luck by rejecting that slave. And if I may ask, why do you care?” He shakes his head. “No. That isn’t the question I should be asking right now.” He flicks his gaze back to me. I go hot and cold at the same time. The same burning hatred and disgust I saw in his eyes this morning have returned. “How did the news of our mate status and rejection reach you?” His gaze intensifies. “Did you tell him? Did you bring him here to bully me into taking you back? huh?” He asks harshly while raising his brows in a menacing manner. He’s looking at me as though he might inhale the length of me in one breath. I shoot Alpha Jayce a helpless look, hoping he comes to my rescue because I have no idea what to do right now. Even if I try to talk, all that’s going to come out from my mouth is a violent sob that’s warming up in my throat.
“Why aren’t you saying anything?” He takes a furious step forward. “Answer me!” He screams at the top of his lungs and my entire body vibrates like I’ve touched a live wire.
“Raise your voice at her one more time and I’ll tear you tongue from your mouth.” That threat alone gains the silence it commanded the moment it left Alpha Jayce’s lips and reverberated throughout the room. Alpha Myles, after a long moment of silence, scoffs in disbelief.
He definitely wants to scold me even harder now, but who is he to go against the Alpha’s dare?
“I don’t understand why you are defending her. She’s a servant.”
“She is my mate now and the soon to be Supreme Luna. Address her with respect.”
A pause. A beat. A wave of intensity floods every pore of my body.
His mate.
The future Supreme Luna.
Does this mean he’s not going to reject me?
“What?” Myles asks aghast. Daphne cannot believe her ears either. She definitely has a lot of questions swimming in her head right now, but just like me, she doesn’t have the audacity to join in the conversation between the Alphas. “No. No. You’ve got to be kidding me.”
“Do I look like I am?”
Myles bursts into laughter.
“You’re eating my crumbs? The Lord Alpha of the entire werewolf world is mated to the girl I rejected? This is unbelievable! I thought you…” A heavy blow that sends him flying to the other end of the room lands on his left jaw before he can finish that statement. He lets out a painful grunt as his body collides with the hard tiled floor. Alpha Reagan stretches, tilts his neck from side to side and uncurls his fist.
I don’t need to be told, but I know that’s what he has been meaning to do the moment we stepped into this living room. He wasn’t going to have a goodnight’s sleep if his fist did not touch any part of Myles’ body.
“You can have her.” Says Myles, staggering as he tries to regain his balance. “I don’t need her anyway. “She’s useless!”
History repeats itself and this time around, I can bet Myles lost a few teeth from the impact. Alpha Jayce stands over his almost limb body.
“In a few months to come, we’ll know who’s eating crumbs. You just ruined your life as an Alpha and what’s even sadder is the fact that you don’t know that yet. In the future, if you ever try to come after my mate, I will skin you alive. Mark my words.”
My body thrums to life when he walks back to me and wraps those long fingers of his around my wrist. As he takes me out of there, I fight my urge to show Daphne my middle finger.
The pain and suffering is over. I’m going to start a new, peaceful life with my second chance mate…
Or so I thought.
