Chapter 8 The Nerve
CHAPTER EIGHT: THE NERVE
S K Y L E R
The walls of the inside were painted lavender. The living room was small and had a wooden center table, a white disgusting sofa.
Seems they've both been working on the house since we left for school.
"This place is small and disgusting." I say with an irritated tone.
"Too bad, this is our new house now." My mom replied in a bored tone.
"Whatever. Where's my room?" I ask, hoping it was fixed up already.
"Upstairs. Room to your left."
I climbed the stairs, they kept making squeaking noises with each step i took. I located the door and opened it. It was small, with an open window facing the neighbors. It is still painted lavender, not that i mind, purple is the color of royalty.
This is the only thing i like about this house.
Getting a clearer view of the arranged room, I notice that there are two beds in the room.
Why is that?
"Mom!" I yell walking downstairs, hoping it's not what i think it is. I found her in the kitchen offloading stuff from a box.
"Why are there two bed in my room?"
"Oh. It's not your room, it's yours and Crystal's room."
"What! Why did i get stuck with her!"
"This is a three bedroom apartment. The first room is mine, the second belongs to Steven, He's the only boy here and the third room is yours and Crystal."
"Wait. Where are the annoying brats?"
"They are your siblings, not annoying brats. I don't like those friends of yours, they keep filling your head wi-"
"Enough mom, I don't want to hear i-"
A ring of the doorbell interrupted me, we just arrived but these low class people have already started annoying me.
"Go get the door, now!" Mom ordered.
Rolling my eyes and wondering where those brats are, I walked to the door and opened it. I open it and find a smiling dark skinned girl that I'm guessing is around my age or so, holding something in her hands.
"Hey!" She beamed.
I looked at her from head to toe, she looked okay, hazel brown skin, gorgeous bouncy hair, her aura radiated happiness and i am already sick of it.
She looks familiar, just don't remember properly.
"What do you want?" I ask in a bored tone.
"This is for you!" She beamed with a bright smile.
"Did I ask for this?"
"No, it's just a welcome gift. I stay at the house next to yours so i ass-"
"Don't assume anything. We aren't going to stay here for long." I hissed at her and shut the door.
Who does she think she is?!
"Why did you slam the door sweetie?" My mom's voice asked from the kitchen.
"Don't call me that. And a girl just managed to annoy me this evening." I say in a stressed tone and went back to my room.
As i was going to lay down, something caught my attention. I saw a shadow throw a puch at another shadow. Usually I'm the type to sit and watch, but i couldn't see faces so it was pointless to keep watching.
When I finally relaxed on one of the beds, i heard a door slam shut. I ignored it and decided to take a nap. But as if on cue, Crystal and Steven came into the room and started singing and dancing, and it's not like they were any good at it. They were being annoying.
"Stop! I can't sleep properly with both your annoying voices." I complain to both of them.
"Then go outside." Steven screamed while rolling his eyes.
I storm out of the room, slamming the door really loud and went to the living room. The living room was quiet so i settled into the couch and closed my eyes.
"Skyler, do you want to help set the table?" My mother asked and i let out a groan.
"I can't have a single moment of peace in this house!" I scream and stormed out of the living room, slamming the door really hard on my way out.
Outside was dark and windy, but it was exactly what i needed, silence. I looked around and sat on a small paint can beside the open gate.
Peace at last.
I hung my head low but footsteps made me look towards the dark lonely road and i noticed a figure in a hood walking towards me. Maybe he stays around here?
But why does he look like a serial killer, with a hood and all.
My heart began racing, but i felt glued to the paint can. I couldn't run away.
Doesn't matter. I'm not scared.
The figure kept walking towards me and i practiced my death glare to hide my fright.
"Listen, I'm not scared of you. If you think you can take advantage of me, then you're mistaken. I can defend myself." I recited, standing up to my feet and pointing at him with my index finger,
There was no reply. Maybe the person's high?
"Uh..?" A deep voice said in confusion and slowly raised his head to meet my eyes
"You?" I ask, surprised to see this face in this neighbourhood.
"I'm not the type to take advantage of helpless girls." A deep voice said with a chuckle.
Now this idiot has seen me! I imagine he's gonna tell people stop school tomorrow.
"Why are you here? Are you stalking me?" I asked the chocolate skinned boy I've been seeing at school.
"I live here, strawberry." He replied, shaking his head.
"Oh.." I say in slight embarrassment.
"What are you doing here? What happened to your palace?"
"I...I...um.."
"Skyler, come inside for dinner!" Steven screamed into the air and i felt like spanking him for screaming at me like that.
"Dinner?"
"Um..this is a misunderstanding. I definitely don't live here, why am i explaining to you. Go away." I say to cover my tract and began sprinting to the house.
I should have gone to the backyard or something, now this idiot has seen me.
"Skyler, I don't appreciate you leaving this house. It's a new environment, you don't know it very well." My mom scolded immediately i entered the house.
"Enough mom! I know. Stop screaming."
"Come and sit." Crystal called but i just glared at her to remind her that i haven't forgotten what she and her brother did in the room.
"Jasper decided to cook something for us, because, well, it's no secret that I'm not the best in the kitchen."
"Jasper shouldn't you be leaving? It's dark already."
"Skyler!"
"No Pearl, she's right, I should be leaving."
Pearl?
"Mrs Richmond to you, because she's a married woman." I say emphasising on the married part.
"Skyler, shut up!" Crystal scolded.
"No, you shut up. Fuck all of this!" I say and stormed off to my room.
Everything about this house is annoying. I can't stand any of them. How long will i have to live like this? I hate my life.
After awhile, the door emitted a screeching sound. Crystal's figure became clearer.
"What do you want?! Get out!" I scream.
"In case you forgot, this isn't your room, it's ours, and you can't tell me to leave my room."
The nerve of this girl! She's actually talking back at me.
I ignored her and turned to sleep. I fell asleep within minutes. My eyes opened due to a certain discomfort i was feeling and I couldn't sleep afterwards. My stomach kept rumbling and making strange sounds.
I didn't eat dinner.
I got up from my bed and sat down. I grabbed my phone the time flickered on the screen, 3:00AM. I groan to myself, where am i going to find food at three in the morning.
I went for the door, opening it quietly but the door didn't cooperate and still made screeching sounds but Crystal didn't wake up. I tiptoed my way to the fridge and found nothing important in the fridge. Not even leftovers.
"What are you searching for? Did you get hungry?" A voice said from behind, startling me.
"Geez mom you scared the crap out of me." I say when i see her switching the lights on.
"You're hungry, aren't you?" My mom asked with a chuckle.
"No, I came to get water!" I tried to lie but as usual my body didn't cooperate and it made a rumbling sound causing my mom to laugh softly.
"Jasper left fruits. Check the fridge properly and there are crackers on the counter, help yourself."
I checked the bowls and found apples. I took out two and grabbed the crackers and settled on the couch and began munching on the crackers.
Feeling something sink into my stomach made me feel good and little by little, I could feel my eyelids become heavy.
