The Uncertainty of the Future
Night had fallen completely over the city, but inside Alex Solano’s small apartment, darkness was not the only cloak wrapping around him. Though his surroundings were humble—void of luxury or ostentation—something far heavier than the absence of opulence seemed to settle on his shoulders. It was a feeling that had accompanied him for weeks, perhaps months, but tonight, following the revelation of the black leather folder in Don Ernesto's office, it felt infinitely more intense.
Alex was leaning back on his sofa, staring at the television screen without paying real attention. The evening news images were merely a blurry murmur while his thoughts drifted toward an unpredictable horizon. The life he had maintained until now—that double existence between being an anonymous ward and the "shadow" of the tycoon—was beginning to wear him down. Despite his growing influence in business and his mentor opening the doors to an empire, Alex felt trapped in a maze of secrets.
The buzz of a text message broke the silence. He pulled his phone from his pocket and read the screen: it was Laura, his girlfriend.
"I'm waiting for you at our usual coffee shop at 7. See you there?"
An involuntary smile touched his face as he read the words. He couldn't help it; despite the internal storm dragging him down, she represented his only true sanctuary. Laura, with whom he had been in a relationship for over three years, was completely oblivious to his connection with Don Ernesto, as well as the colossal scale of the business group in which he operated. To her, Alex was still that focused young man trying to juggle a low-profile administrative job with his final academic credits, striving to get ahead like any other guy his age.
Although Alex hated lying to her, the weight of his secret threatened to shatter him. Every time he looked at her, he felt that this parallel identity he had forged in the shadows acted as an invisible chain. It was impossible for him to be transparent: he couldn't confess that he would soon take command of a multi-billion-dollar conglomerate, nor that, beneath his seemingly modest life, he was the sole heir to an incalculable fortune.
He stood up and began dressing in a hurry. The exhaustion reflected on his face betrayed the wear and tear of a day where corporate demands gave no quarter. Looking at himself in the hallway mirror, he saw the same facade as always: the disciplined young man trying to meet his mentor's high expectations, but also the man who silently doubted whether he would ever be up to the challenge. Insecurity accompanied his every step, and though those around him assumed he had everything under control, he was fully aware that he was playing on a board infinitely more dangerous than he had initially calculated.
The trip to their usual café—a quiet corner in the heart of downtown—passed in silence. The cool night air blew gently, and the gleam of the skyscrapers cast a cold aura over the avenues. Alex felt disconnected from the routine around him. He got the impression that passersby were enjoying simple, transparent lives, while his own, behind a facade of normalcy, was riddled with dark corners.
Crossing the threshold of the establishment, he spotted Laura at a table in the back. She was immersed in reading a book, blissfully detached from the tensions suffocating her partner. That was her essence: a serene, reflective woman who never pushed or asked probing questions. That peace was precisely what had made him fall in love with her in the first place. Yet, that very nobility was now binding him to an increasingly dense web of omissions.
Laura looked up as she sensed his presence, and a genuine smile lit up her face. Alex returned the gesture, though his held a hint of melancholy that she couldn't quite decipher.
"Hi, sweetie," she greeted, marking her page in the book before standing up to pull him into a hug.
"Hey, Laura," he replied, taking shelter in her embrace with an intensity that betrayed his desperate need for calm.
They settled at the table, and the conversation drifted toward everyday matters. Laura asked about his day, the pace of work, and his progress—mundane topics that held weight for her, but in Alex's mind were starting to lose their sharp edges. Not from a lack of affection for her, but because the destiny Don Ernesto was carving around him eclipsed any ordinary parameters. The corporate terrain he belonged to demanded cold alliances, personal sacrifices, and calculated risks. And deep down, Alex wasn't sure he wanted to pay that price.
Laura observed him closely, noticing a shadow in his posture.
"Are you sure everything's okay? You've felt a bit distant for a few days now. Is it work? You know you can vent to me," she offered, her eyes filled with an empathy that brought Alex as much comfort as guilt.
He didn't answer right away. He scanned the room, searching for a believable excuse that wouldn't involve an outright lie. But she knew him well enough to catch his evasions.
"It's just that... things are getting complicated at the company, Laura. And sometimes I doubt if I have what it takes to handle everything coming down the line," Alex admitted, lowering his voice.
Laura knit her brows in concern.
"What do you mean, exactly? What kind of changes? Did something bad happen?"
Silence settled between them once more. Alex clenched his hands beneath the table. He knew crossing that line was impossible; he couldn't reveal that his future no longer fully belonged to him, but was tied to high-stakes corporate power plays discussed behind closed doors with Don Ernesto. Much less could he mention the black leather folder or the strategies to consolidate control over an empire.
He opted for a soft smile, retreating once again behind discretion to avoid dragging her into dangerous territory.
"Nothing I won't eventually sort out, Laura. Just internal restructuring, projects are growing, and the workload is getting more demanding. You know how the corporate world works when there's so much on the line," he explained, striving to project calmness.
Although Laura didn't seem entirely convinced by the explanation, she chose not to corner him. She had the wisdom to give him space when she saw him overwhelmed—a gesture Alex silently appreciated, even as he felt the rift between them widening inside. The emotional distance was growing, and the young man understood that, sooner or later, the momentum of his actions would demand a price.
They spent the rest of the evening chatting about lighter topics, but deep down, Alex couldn't detach himself from the falsehood he was living. The more time he spent with Laura, the more he felt like he was playing a role foreign to his true reality. Keeping the truth from her was eroding their mutual trust and distancing him from who he used to be before entering Don Ernesto's circle. The certainty that the deception wouldn't last forever tormented him; the truth would eventually come to light, and the consequences for Laura were unpredictable.
They said goodbye near the entrance of the café with a brief kiss before Alex melted into the shadows of the street. As he walked back to his building, the doubt surrounding his own resilience became overwhelming. He felt as though he were walking a tightrope—risking his relationship with Laura, what little stability he had left, and his very identity, now reduced to a mere reflection of the old tycoon's interests.
He knew that sooner or later, the situation would collapse. The real question was whether he would have the strength to hold the pieces together when everything blew sky-high.
