The Billionaire’s Illness

The buzz of the phone shattered the morning quiet. Alex was in his apartment, sitting at his desk, meticulously reviewing the balance sheets and reports he had brought home the night before. It was early; the sun was just beginning to peak between the silhouettes of the skyscrapers, but the young man had already been active for a couple of hours. Despite the suffocating pressure of his double life, the weight of the falsehood he maintained with Laura, and the growing responsibility on his shoulders, Alex kept pressing forward. He had to. He needed to sustain the role of the flawless ward—the protege Don Ernesto had shaped to take the reins of his legacy.

But the persistent vibration of the screen abruptly brought him back to reality.

He looked at the caller ID. It was Claudia, Don Ernesto's personal secretary.

"Alex, Don Ernesto demands to see you. Right now," she said, a tension in her voice that left no room for doubt: something was wrong.

"What happened, Claudia?" Alex asked, feeling a flash of anxiety he couldn't quite conceal.

"He’s at his residence. He suffered a sudden health crisis and is refusing to go to the hospital for now. It's best if you come right away," the secretary replied, betraying an unusual alarm for someone of her composure.

Alex felt an icy tightness in his chest. His mind, accustomed to reacting under pressure, began connecting the dots. How delicate was the tycoon’s condition? Despite the aura of invulnerability the billionaire had projected for decades, Alex knew time spared no one. Yet, the prospect of witnessing his mentor's physical collapse threw him off balance. He didn't feel mentally prepared for that scenario.

"I'm leaving for his place immediately," Alex answered, ending the call.

He threw on his jacket, grabbed his car keys, and left the apartment in a hurry. The metropolis, slowly awakening amidst traffic and daily noise, seemed oblivious to the silent storm threatening to break loose. As he descended into the garage and started his car engine, his mind raced with Claudia's words. There was a genuine urgency in her warning, and he sensed that from this moment on, the full weight of responsibility would crash down onto his shoulders.

During the drive toward the exclusive residential area where Don Ernesto's mansion stood, questions bombarded him relentlessly. What stance should he take if the diagnosis was grave or terminal? Was he truly prepared to step into the empire’s leadership—a goal he had been trained for in theory, but which seemed overwhelming in practice? He knew all too well that the stability of the conglomerate depended on Don Ernesto's leadership. What would happen if that backbone fractured?

Crossing the property gates, the butler escorted him without delay toward the master suite on the top floor. The atmosphere, steeped in the usual scent of fine wood and lavender, felt strangely unnatural. The wide hallways that typically hosted a constant parade of advisors and household staff were deserted. The echo of his own footsteps against the marble heightened a sense of vulnerability he tried hard to suppress.

Don Ernesto was resting in the king-size bed, covered by a silk duvet that exposed his gaunt frame. His face, which usually projected vigor and commanded respect, looked pale and worn down by exhaustion. Alex paused for a moment before stepping closer, struck by the old man's frailty. The man who served as the central pillar of his existence seemed, for the very first time, completely vulnerable.

"Don Ernesto..." Alex whispered, approaching the head of the bed with a blend of dismay and respect.

The tycoon opened his eyes slowly, as though the simple act of focusing demanded a superhuman effort.

"Alex..." His voice sounded raspy, faint, a far cry from its usual firmness. "I'm sorry for rushing you over here. I didn't mean to alarm you."

"Don't worry about that, sir. Tell me what you need," Alex replied, striving to project composure even as his pulse quickened.

Don Ernesto offered a faint smile, laced with a resignation that did not escape the young man's notice. The old lion was fully aware that his strength was beginning to fail him.

"I know this arrangement isn't exactly the one you would have chosen for your life..." the old man expressed in a measured tone.

Alex knit his brows, taken aback by the reflective shift.

"What do you mean by that, sir?" he inquired, taking another step toward the bed.

The billionaire closed his eyes for a few seconds, catching his breath before finding the words.

"I know doubts plague your mind, Alex. I sense the weight that the demands of money, the firm, and power exert over you. I want you to understand something: when I took you under my wing, I didn't do it just to train a cold executive. I wanted to shape a complete man. If at any point this path crushes your essence, I want you to have the freedom to forge your own way—even if that means deviating from mine."

The young man listened in absolute bewilderment. Was this fatherly advice, a warning, or the prelude to a farewell? Don Ernesto was implicitly admitting that control of the empire was on the verge of changing hands. For the first time, Alex experienced the true magnitude of the responsibility looming over him.

"I'm not sure I can fill your shoes..." Alex admitted, betrayed by a sudden surge of honesty.

Don Ernesto looked at him with a mix of pride and understanding.

"You have more steel in you than you give yourself credit for, Alex. You possess an inner strength you haven't put to the test yet. The only certainty is that the road ahead will be very different from the one you had planned."

A heavy silence settled over the room. Alex remained motionless, processing the weight of the conversation. He knew his mentor's words weren't a mere motivational talk; they were the formalization of his last will. The old man, conscious of his physical decline, was preparing the ground. Alex's doubt didn't stem from his loyalty, but from the chasm of tension that would open when the Ruiz family and the board members—who viewed him as nothing more than an insignificant protege—discovered that total control belonged to him.

After a pause, Don Ernesto made an effort to prop himself up slightly on the pillows. He reached toward the nightstand and picked up a sealed manila envelope, extending it toward his ward.

"Keep this. It is urgent that you review it," the tycoon indicated, his gaze piercing.

Alex took the envelope, feeling the stiffness of the heavy paper between his fingers.

"What is this?" he asked as he carefully peeled off the seal.

Inside, he found a set of legal documents. The primary document was a complex corporate will and trust agreement. It wasn't limited to the division of personal assets; it established a protocol for the transfer of power, granting Alex veto authority and ownership of preferred shares in the event of the founder's incapacity or death. The text bore the notary's signature, but retained blank spaces reserved for final ratification.

"This is..." Alex managed to utter, but Don Ernesto raised a hand to cut him off.

"It's not just a will, Alex. It's the strategic roadmap to prevent the vultures from tearing apart the structure it took me a lifetime to build. We don't have much room for error. Read it in detail, analyze the clauses, and prepare yourself to make the right calls. Thousands of families rely on the stability of this company. You cannot afford to falter."

Alex nodded in silence, absorbing the gravity of the task. His destiny had just been bound to that file. The theoretical lessons were over; the real game demanded immediate action.

Analyzing the clauses, reviewing the addendums, and coordinating with the doctors who arrived at the residence later consumed the rest of the day. By the time Alex finally left the mansion, dusk had completely faded, and night wrapped around the city once more. The manila envelope in his briefcase felt heavier than any document he had ever signed. The choices ahead would radically alter his existence and the lives of everyone around him.

The young man paused for a second before stepping into his car, breathing in the crisp night air. The point of no return lay behind him. Don Ernesto had handed him the keys to the kingdom; now it was up to him to prove whether he had the resolve to hold onto it.
