Chapter 2 The Ex-Girlfriend Appears

Carol’s face suddenly turned pale.

Gillian Davies saw Carol and immediately stood up, flipping her curly hair.

“Carol, long time no see,” she said with a smile as she walked over and intimately grabbed Carol’s hand. “I’m truly sorry for disrupting your wedding three years ago when I didn’t know any better.”

Gillian Davies’ tone was extremely sincere, and her phoenix eyes lined with upturned eyeliner showed no other hidden emotions.

Carol swallowed back the words she was just about to say when she saw that Gillian was wearing her favorite fuzzy slippers.

“This child is family, don’t be so formal...” Mrs. Anderson said as she came over and pulled Gillian Davies to sit next to Hubert Anderson again. “It’s New Year’s, let’s chat about something happy.”

Carol silently watched their actions, her gaze fixed on Hubert Anderson, wanting him to give her an explanation.

How did Gillian Davies suddenly become family?

Old Mr. Anderson's blurry old eyes finally saw his beloved grandson's wife. He hurriedly called her over to his side.

"Carol, why are you and Hubert so late getting back after taking the same plane?"

Carol quickly collected herself and smiled. "I was working a shift at the airport for a bit, kept grandpa waiting so long."

Old Mr. Anderson looked at her sympathetically and sighed, "This is your third Christmas in the Anderson family. Is there anything you want to say?"

"I have nothing to say. I'm more interested in hearing what Hubert has to say to me." Carol's mouth was still slightly smiling, but she shifted the topic to the silent man in question.

Christmas Eve brought people back home, so this was the real reason he wanted a divorce?

Hubert Anderson glanced at Carol, his slanted eyes still showing little emotion.

"Have you signed the divorce agreement yet? We'll go to court and get it done after New Year's."

He spoke very directly. None of the Anderson family showed any surprise, including Old Mr. Anderson. They all seemed to have known about this for a while.

Carol, left standing there, had become a complete outsider in this house.

"So I was called here to eat a farewell dinner?" She pulled the corners of her mouth into a mocking arc.

"Grandpa called you over to ask what compensation you want. Although you didn't give birth to any children in the three years you married into the Anderson family, and you’re always busy with your career instead of family every day, it was Hubert who proposed the divorce, so he is in the wrong to you as well." Mrs. Anderson said from the side.

There were hidden barbs in her words between the lines.

A feeling Carol couldn’t put into words welled up in her heart. She looked at Hubert Anderson, "When we first got married, you made me get sterilized. Now you want a divorce because I can't have children?"

A hint of complicated emotion flashed through Hubert Anderson's cold eyes, but it was fleeting.

"What happened back then was consensual between us. Now we should also part on good terms."

Carol's chest tightened, and she couldn't get another word out.

She rushed out of Anderson Manor, not stopping until she reached the cold, dark highway, where she finally let the tears stream down her face.

Hubert Anderson brought his ex-girlfriend into their home blatantly, clearly wanting to rekindle their old relationship and insisting on a divorce. But why did he have to attack her for not being able to have children?

For the past three years, she had flown with him in the same plane all over half the globe, spending most of their time together at 50,000 feet in the air. How could he say she was busy with her career and neglecting the family?

Wherever Hubert Anderson was, that was home...

But now, there was no more home.

"Dong—"

The New Year bells chimed, fireworks lit up the entire sky, heralding the arrival of a new year.

Carol stood under the dim streetlamp, looking at her elongated, lonely, pitiful shadow, murmuring to herself:

"Merry Christmas..."
