Chapter 5

Nathan got home from work, but there was no smell of food.

He sneered right away. Bella’s mood was really something this time. She hadn’t made any dinner.

“Butler,” he called out.

The butler quickly came over. “Young Master, what do you need?”

“Where is she?” Nathan asked, looking upset.

The butler knew exactly who Nathan meant. “Young Madam left yesterday. She said she had already told you.”

Nathan then remembered that Bella had said she would move out when she talked about divorce yesterday. Since he hadn’t been home the night before, he didn’t know she had actually left. He thought she was just angry and joking about the divorce. But it looked like Bella had really gone, and the divorce was real.

For the past year, Bella had made meals for him every day, even though he was hardly ever home. But now, there was no one waiting for him, and maybe there wouldn’t be in the future. Wasn’t this good? No one in his way anymore, but he felt a strange emotion he couldn’t shake off.

The next day, John sent a trusted assistant to help Bella get used to the job.

As work was ending, there was a knock on the office door. Bella looked up and saw a tall, thin man walk in. “Ian, what are you doing here?”

Ian smiled insincerely, “My father told me you started working here, so I came to check in. How’s it going? Getting used to it?”

Bella smiled back, “Thanks to Assistant George, it’s been going well.”

“Really?” Ian’s eyes showed contempt. A lovesick housewife probably couldn’t handle a project proposal. He casually picked up a folder from the desk and looked at it, but his smile quickly faded. “I was supposed to handle this project. I had already made connections. How did it end up with you?”

Bella calmly replied, “I talked it over with Grandfather. I’m taking over this project.” In her past life, the Foster family’s problems started with this project. Plus, Ian’s so-called connections were just a way for him to pocket money. It started small but grew into something huge, ruining the whole company.

Even if Nathan hadn’t taken over the Foster family, Ian would still have destroyed it. She wanted to deal with Ian first.

Ian’s face darkened. “You’ve just started here. It’s not right to give you such a big project worth millions. Even though Uncle is the chairman, this isn’t appropriate. Clearly, this is beyond your level, little sister.”

Bella looked up at him. “Why isn’t it appropriate? Even if I mess up, it’s just a billion-dollar loss. I can handle it.”

Ian clenched his fists. He could make millions from this deal, which wouldn’t matter much to Bella, but it would to him. He forced a smile. “Are you trying to go against me on purpose?”

A smile touched Bella’s lips. “Ian, what are you talking about? I’m just interested in this project and want to give it a try.”

Ian eyed Bella, feeling something was off. Could she have figured something out? He took a deep breath. Bella was just a lovesick fool. What could she do to compete with him?

“I’m familiar with President Steve regarding this project. It was agreed I’d be in charge, and he agreed to sign the contract. Changing things last minute probably won’t sit well with him. Cooperation isn’t decided just by Grandpa’s say-so! Claire, you’re new to this, and there are many details you don’t understand.”

Bella stayed calm throughout. “It’s fine. Like I said, if it doesn’t work out, I’ll take the losses myself.”

Ian didn’t say more. President Steve had long been on his side. If Bella wanted to take his project, she wouldn’t succeed!

… Bella spent some time finding out a lot about President Steve. She was in a good mood after meeting him until she saw Nathan at the hotel entrance.

“Nathan, aren’t you talking to your little lover tonight?”

During the years when Julia was abroad, Nathan would call her almost every night. Each time, he’d avoid Bella. She used to think he was just busy with work or that the Foster family was in trouble. She only learned the truth when Julia came back and bragged. It was her own fault for loving such a scumbag.

“It’s just work,” Nathan said, then his face darkened. “Did you actually check my phone?”

Bella smirked, “You’re too full of yourself. Did you think I needed to check? You call her every day. Did you think I’m deaf?”
