Chapter 04

My mother-in-law, unable to contain her urgency, grabbed Mr. Allan, insisting he help deliver my baby first.

At that moment, Lauren was wailing incessantly in the room. My mother-in-law, with a face full of sympathy, comforted Lauren.

I quickly said to the mother-in-law, "Lauren is in critical condition with her premature labor. Why not let Mr. Allan save her first? I can hold on a bit longer. We can’t risk anything happening to Lauren."

My mother-in-law hesitated, glancing at my belly. I continued, "Although Lauren's marriage into a wealthy family depends on her giving birth to a boy, if something happens to her, everything will be meaningless."

Hearing this, my mother-in-law decisively told Mr. Allan, "Mr. Allan, please attend to my daughter first."

She and Mr. Allan rushed into Lauren's room. I endured waves of intense pain, gently comforting the child in my belly.

"Baby, don't be in a hurry. Wait for your daddy to come back before you come out. For our family, you need to hold on a little longer."

It seemed like the baby understood my words, as the contractions became less severe.

Meanwhile, heart-wrenching screams continued to emanate from Lauren’s room.

After a while, the door was slammed open, and Mr. Allan, in a panic, shouted, "She’s bleeding out. We need to take her to a hospital now!"

Mr. Allan grabbed his phone to call an ambulance.

Just then, the door opened. It was Colin!

He rushed to me, anxiously asking, "Caroline, how are you?"

I threw myself into his arms and fainted from exhaustion.

Before losing consciousness, I felt an immense relief knowing that the person I could rely on had finally returned.

When I opened my eyes again, I was lying in a hospital bed. A nurse held my hand, urging me to push. After exhausting all my strength, I finally heard my child's cry an hour later.

Lying powerless on the delivery bed, the doctor brought the baby for me to see. "It’s a boy, all normal."

Lying on the bed, I couldn’t help but cry out loud. In my past life, I had tried so hard to give birth only to be devastated by the news of a stillbirth. The shock and grief had caused a severe hemorrhage, and I nearly died.

But this time, I finally heard the nurse tell me that I had given birth to a healthy child.

I closed my eyes and drifted off into a heavy sleep.

Upon waking, Colin was beside me, looking concerned. I grabbed his hand, anxiously asking, "Where’s the baby? Where is he?" Colin lifted the child from a nearby cradle, smiling as he said, "Right here. Don’t worry. I've been watching over him."

My heart finally settled. Looking at the adorable child in the cradle and then at my husband beside me, I felt immensely happy.

Suddenly, I remembered Lauren and asked Colin, "How is Lauren? Did she give birth?"

He nodded, relieved, "Fortunately, I got home in time to take Lauren, who was bleeding heavily, to the hospital. She managed to safely give birth to a boy."

I furrowed my brow, confused. Lauren was supposed to have a girl. Even if her child survived the rush to the hospital, the sex couldn’t have changed.

I grabbed my husband’s hand, staring intently as I asked, "Are you sure she had a boy?"

My husband, puzzled, replied, "Caroline, why do you ask? Lauren indeed had a boy. Although premature, he was placed in an incubator immediately, and he’s quite healthy."

It seemed Lauren truly had a boy, but how could that be?

Could it be that my mother-in-law and Lauren secretly switched someone else’s baby?
