Chapter 02

My mother-in-law, holding a bowl of chicken soup, said to me with eager care, "Caroline, drink this chicken soup. I made it especially for you."

Ever since she found out I was carrying a boy, my mother-in-law had been particularly attentive. At the time, I was deeply moved, feeling incredibly fortunate to have such a wonderful mother-in-law.

But now, I realized that she was only using me and my unborn child as tools for her and her daughter to climb up the social ladder.

With my husband not by my side, I couldn't afford to fall out with her, so I silently took the chicken soup and set it on the table.

I told my mother-in-law, "The soup is too hot. Could you get me a spoon?"

She agreed with a loving expression.

I gently closed the door and pressed my ear against the crack, listening for her footsteps moving away.

Instead, I heard her say with a venomous tone, "Such a nuisance. Once she gives birth, I’ll deal with her."

Hearing such dreadful words from her, who had just shown a face full of kindness, sent chills all over my body.

I quickly grabbed my phone and dialed my husband Colin’s number.

To successfully steal my child, my mother-in-law had intentionally sent my husband back to his hometown two days before my due date, under the pretext of attending his cousin’s wedding. So, he was still there.

"Hello, dear, what's up? I'm at my cousin's wedding," he said.

Hearing his voice made my hands tremble with the phone.

In my previous life, my husband had suddenly suffered a heart attack due to stress caused by my mother-in-law, collapsing beside my bed. I tried to save him, but it was too late, and I could only watch him die in agony.

This time, I was determined to change our fates!

I urgently told Colin, "Honey, you need to come home immediately. I'm about to give birth. Hurry to the hospital and wait for me."

Although Colin was surprised, he immediately responded, "Okay, dear. Don't panic. I’m on my way to the hospital right now."

Only after hearing my husband's affirmative reply did I feel slightly relieved.

But when I opened the door, there stood my mother-in-law, spoon in hand.

My heart pounded wildly, and I managed a weak smile, asking, "What are you doing standing at the door?"

She smiled and said, "Didn’t you want a spoon? I brought it over for you."

I took the spoon from her and told her, "Thanks. I can drink it myself. You don’t need to stay here and look after me."

She nodded and walked away.

However, I couldn't shake the feeling of unease, unsure of when she had started standing outside my door.

My mother-in-law headed to Lauren’s room, which was next to the bathroom. Pretending to use the bathroom, I leaned against the bathroom window and overheard my mother-in-law and Lauren talking.

"Lauren, did that bitch find out something? I heard her telling your brother to go to the hospital and wait for her," she snarled.

"What? That bitch must have discovered something. What do we do if Colin is at the hospital? How will we snatch the child?"

My mother-in-law paused for a moment, then said with a smug tone, "She thinks sending your brother to the hospital will stop us? If she’s really about to give birth, we'll just claim it's too risky to drive to the hospital and have the doctor come here instead. With just the three of us at home, we'll call the shots."

As I listened to their conversation, a cold sweat broke out all over me.

I couldn't believe how malicious my mother-in-law and Lauren were.

I had to hold on until Colin arrived.

But just then, a sharp pain shot through my abdomen, and with a splash, my water broke on the floor.

I was going into labor!
