Chapter 3
The test results showed that the baby in my belly was doing well.
I touched my still relatively flat stomach, feeling a bit at a loss.
I had been so looking forward to his arrival, but now, I didn't know what to do.
This change was all because of Liam's infidelity.
Thinking about the intimate scene I saw today, it felt like needles were pricking my chest, causing a subtle pain.
Should I get a divorce? What about the child? Could I just let go of the feelings I've had for Liam all these years?
These questions weighed down on me, making it hard to breathe.
I returned home with mixed feelings and found that Liam hadn't come back yet.
The house was cold and empty, and my heart turned completely cold as well.
No matter what, I needed an explanation from Liam.
Without hesitation, I called Liam, but he hung up immediately.
He then sent me a message on WhatsApp: "Ave, there's something urgent at the company. I'm working overtime and can't take calls. I might come home late, don't wait up for me. Sleep early, be good."
Working overtime at the company.
The same old excuse.
During college, Liam and I had started a business together. It didn't make much progress until our senior year when things began to pick up.
You could say that the company's current success also had my contribution.
However, after we got married, I focused on the family and wasn't very involved in company matters.
But that didn't mean I couldn't find out what was going on.
Soon enough, I got information from an employee.
A month ago, the company hired a new assistant named Nora, a college student who seemed quite clever.
Her position was as Liam's assistant.
Since Nora joined the company, Liam had been taking special care of her.
There were even rumors about them in the company. Despite this, Liam didn't bother to avoid suspicion.
My heart sank to rock bottom.
I couldn't trust Liam's words anymore.
I called him again but was hung up on once more.
Shortly after, I received a text message from an unknown number. But I knew immediately it was from Nora.
"Miss Ave, Mr. Winters is with me right now. He's not convenient to take your call. I'll have him call you back later."
Her words were ambiguous and provocative. My nails dug into my arm's flesh; the pain was sharp but still not as intense as the ache in my heart.
Liam had indeed deceived me.
I didn't reply to her message and sat quietly on the living room sofa.
The clock on the wall ticked away, constantly reminding me that time was passing by while Liam stayed with his mistress and hadn't come home yet.
At one in the morning, Liam finally came back home.
He tiptoed inside and seemed relieved when he saw that the living room lights were off.
But when he turned on the light and saw me sitting there,
his face visibly changed to one of panic.
He forced a smile. "Ave, why didn't you turn on the light? It's so late; why aren't you sleeping? You have a baby in your belly."
So he knew it was late and that I was pregnant!
Then how could he have the nerve to cheat?
I wanted to scream at him but held back. Instead, I looked at him steadily. "Where were you today?"
I had to admit his reaction was quick; his psychological resilience was strong.
Liam sat down beside me and lied without missing a beat. "Didn't I tell you? I was working overtime at the company." He paused and raised an eyebrow playfully. "What? Are you suspicious of me?"
If it weren't for everything that happened today, his calm demeanor might have made me doubt myself for accusing him wrongly.
I pulled a mocking smile and changed the subject. "I heard you hired an assistant?"
Liam's body visibly stiffened for a moment. "Yes, where did you hear that from? It's no big deal; that's why I didn't mention it."
He paused and then changed the topic again. "By the way, how did your prenatal checkup go today? Is everything okay with the baby?"
Suddenly, I didn't want to ask any more questions. This man felt too much like a stranger to me now.
He touched my belly and looked at me affectionately. "Hmm? What's wrong? Are you in a bad mood? Is there something wrong with the baby?"
I nodded. "Yes, I'm in a bad mood. Guess who I saw at the hospital today?"
