Chapter 14
Where had he heard it before?
As Liam pondered, a piece of music ended, and applause filled the surroundings.
In the audience, Harry Pullman didn't expect to see Claire here.
He had some grudges against Claire. His sister, Heather Pullman, had once fervently pursued Liam, but Claire had beaten her to it. The Pullman family lost the chance for a union with the Coleman family. How could Harry not harbor resentment toward Claire for that?
He intended to make things difficult for Claire. He turned slightly and smiled, somewhat probing, "Liam, Claire is here too!"
Liam played with his lighter and remained silent.
Harry was sure that Liam didn't care about Claire, so he called out to her on stage, "Claire!"
Claire looked over.
She knew Harry had no good intentions, but Carl was also there, and she had to give him face.
Claire came over, and Harry poured her three glasses of red wine.
Harry spoke politely, "Claire, I didn't expect to meet you here! When you married Liam back then, Heather was immature and threw a tantrum. Today, I apologize on her behalf!"
Harry was used to socializing and had a high tolerance for alcohol.
For him, three glasses of red wine felt as effortless as drinking plain water, but for Claire, it was a different story.
He stared at three glasses of wine before staring straight at Claire, saying, "Claire, you wouldn't hold it against me, would you?"
Carl sat there with a long finger resting under his chin.
Originally, Claire was his employer, and he should step in. But since Liam hadn't said anything, why should he? Besides, he wanted to see Liam's reaction.
He glanced at Liam.
Liam leaned against the sofa, still playing with his lighter. His dark eyes were lowered, revealing no emotion.
He looked like he didn't intend to intervene.
Carl thought that it seemed Liam and Claire were indeed getting divorced. He was about to say something to defuse the situation when Claire picked up a glass of red wine. She quietly looked at Harry and softly asked, "If I drink these three glasses of wine, will you promise not to make things difficult for me in the future?"
Harry squinted slightly.
He did plan to trouble Claire after Liam divorced her.
He hadn't expected Claire to be smarter than he thought.
However, three glasses of wine would be more than enough for Claire to handle.
Harry scoffed lightly, "Alright, I promise. As long as you drink these three glasses of red wine, our past grievances are settled. Even if you divorce Liam, I won't trouble you."
Knowing him well enough and not fearing he’d go back on his word, Claire looked down at the red wine in her hand.
Her alcohol tolerance was low. One glass would knock her out, but she had no choice. Thinking about the Smith family’s current situation, she couldn't afford another enemy.
Claire tilted her head back and downed her drink in a single gulp.
After finishing her drink, a faint blush spread across her fair cheeks, reaching down to her earlobes. Her eyes sparkled with a newfound allure, a feminine charm that was usually absent. Anyone who caught sight of her at that moment would find it impossible not to be captivated by her beauty.
Upon seeing her, Harry felt a slight flutter in his heart.
He didn't know what this feeling was.
After Claire drank two glasses, Carl spoke up, "Harry, that's enough!"
However, Harry showed no intention of stopping. He still wanted to vent his anger.
Claire realized she was beginning to lose her balance, the world around her slightly swaying. Yet, despite her unsteadiness, she lifted her third glass, her slender fingers trembling slightly as they grasped the glass.
Just as she was about to drink it, Liam spoke calmly, "Enough."
Everyone present was surprised.
Liam stood up from the sofa. One hand grabbed Claire's wrist while the other took the glass of red wine from her hand. He looked at Harry and said with a hint of displeasure in his voice, "I'll drink the last glass for my wife."
He tilted his head back and drank the wine before leaving with Claire.
The room fell silent.
They knew Harry had offended Liam.
After a while, Carl patted Harry, saying, "Misjudged it, huh? Even I didn't expect Liam to step in. Think about it. If he really didn't care about Claire at all, when the Smith family fell apart a year ago, they would have divorced back then!"
Harry leaned back in his chair and covered his eyes with his hand.
He felt overwhelmed.
