His Return

After the meeting with Denver, Kain left the pack grounds. He hadn’t said goodbye, he hadn’t laid another finger on her, nothing. For that, Denise was a bit disappointed. But she heard him promise Denver of his return, so she didn’t give in to worry and instead, trusted those words.

For the next few hours, she happily cleansed every nook and cranny of the pack house and despite not being able to cook well, the pack also had her take care of every single meal they wanted. The taste was the least of their worries, they just wanted to make sure she had no free time on her hands.

Afterwards, her father --who was still livid that he was sent out earlier-- had her clean the dungeons even though they were not normally cleaned at all. Inside, there were rats, dead prisoners that she had to dispose of, bugs, torn flesh and blood. She absolutely despised the sight, but he didn’t allow her to leave until all thirty unoccupied dungeons were clean. So, she spent the rest of the day straight up until the next night stifling inside the dungeons. And even when she was done and close to passing out, Wyatt insisted that she prepared late night snacks for the whole pack.

Apparently, he was staying at Denver’s pack until their deal with Kain was finalized.

The next morning after dealing with a simple breakfast, she headed to the infirmary to visit the pack fighters who she fought that night and just as Kain said, they surprisingly weren’t dead. Luckily, they only had a few bruises and broken bones and were all already up and running except for Luke who was the only one who hadn’t healed fully yet.

When she entered Luke’s room, he was laying on the bed, his back turned to her as he grumbled inaudibly to himself.

“I-Is there anything I can help you with? I couldn’t come earlier because I was busy. Sorry.” She said, placing a plate filled with apple slices on his bedside table. “You can eat these, they’re fresh.”

At the sound of her voice, Luke spun around instantly with an intense glare that made Denise gulp. Sitting up, his arm swept across the table, tossing the plate along with its contents to the floor. “So, it’s you bitch!” He growled. “You’re on some kind of drug, aren’t you?!” He spat.

“Drug?” Denise shuffled back, appalled. “N-No! I told you I couldn’t control my wolf, but you didn’t listen!”

“Bullshit! Tell me where you got the fucking drug! I’ll prove it to them, that I didn’t lose! I’ll prove it that you’re nothing but a weak bitch! You didn’t win! A runt can never win against us!” Luke’s eyes shifted to golden, and he shifted on the bed, settling his feet to the floor. He took menacing steps forward, meanwhile Denise took steps back.

She had no intention of hurting him, but she could see the veins rising on his skin. If he got close enough, he’d harm her and then, her wolf would forcefully take control. She couldn’t let that happen!

Another step and he swung for her. She shifted quickly and managed to evade getting grabbed, but his claws had slashed against the skin of her arm. Now, that spot stung with pain.

“They say you’re a bastard she-wolf who only shifts on full moons, right?” A sinister grin plastered across his lips. “Let’s see you beat me now!” He lunged for her again, and this time, he headed straight for her neck.

Startled, Denise shifted out of his reach then quickly swung her right foot, slamming it into the side of his abdomen with as much force as she could muster. Then, as his eyes widened and he stumbled slightly, she spun on her heel, making a dash for the door.

She needed to leave…now!

Her fumbling hands grabbed the knob and she pulled the door open but before she could make it pass the threshold, fingers slid into her hair and before she knew it, she found herself being yanked back. She fell to the floor and slid across, slamming into the wall. Pain erupted all over and Denise could taste something metallic in her mouth.

“See? You’re weak.” Luke’s grin widened, cracking his fingers. Denise pushed herself up the wall as he moved closer, holding her breath. Her wolf had already been agitated since their mate left, but now, it had gotten worse. She pulled out her claws and sunk them into her thigh, grinding her teeth. That…was something she normally did whenever she wanted to keep her wolf at bay. It helped, sometimes. And other times, it didn’t.

“Let’s not make this harder on you. Tell me where you got the drug, Denise. Don’t make me ask aga---"

Luke’s words got stuck in his throat when an aura suddenly sparked inside the room, an aura so dark that it sent chills down their spine. Even Luke stiffened in place, eyes going wide and face paling drastically. Denise took a breath in, and immediately, she could tell who it was…her mate; Kain.

Her whole body seemed to come alive then and while ignoring the throbbing pain in her limbs, she managed to pull herself to her feet, eyes frantically searching for him. His face was impassive when she spotted him at the door in a neat black suit and glistening black shoes, but just before her excitement could rouse, he moved quicker than their gaze could follow, his arm piercing through Luke’s gut.

“Luke, is it? If you’re so upset that you lost to a woman, then you wouldn’t mind me ridding you off this earth, would you?” He said, looming over him from behind with his bright golden eyes on full display. Blood instantly gushed from between Luke’s lips and Denise’s stomach dropped as he fell to the floor, unmoving.

Kain stepped over his body without a care in the world, and with a striking smile now on his lips, he stretched out his bloody hand for her to take. “Let’s go.”

Denise looked down at his hand, her breath caught in her throat and her hands shaking at her side. Blood…she hated it with every fiber of her being, especially when it wasn’t her own. Right before her eyes, Luke had just been struck down before he could even move, and her mate was smiling after stepping over his body. The scene was like a nightmare for her. How could he kill another person so easily?

“W-Why did y-you do that?” She pushed herself closer to the wall, her chest rising and falling rapidly.

Kain’s hand lowered, and he frowned, glancing back at the body behind him. With an irritated grunt, he lifted his leg then slammed his heel backward and into Luke’s cheek. A low groan slipped pass Luke’s lips, startling Denise.

“He’s not dead as you can see.” He told her, returning his attention to her, “But if I stay in this room any longer, I just might kill him. So…shall we?”

He outstretched his arm again and despite the turmoil that coursed through her, she hesitantly slid her hand atop his.

“Good girl.”
