Chapter 3: Why Are You Crying?

One month later.

Louis got engaged - not just any engagement but with his childhood sweetheart Audrey Norton who happened to be a famous actress now.

A female celebrity getting engaged with an aristocrat from a wealthy family made headlines for several days in entertainment news circles without losing its heat anytime soon.

It's hard for Janet to not see it.

No matter which app she opens, she can see the romantic video of Louis proposing to Audrey in a sea of white roses.

When Louis looks at Audrey with tender eyes and a gentle smile on his lips, it's as if he has an ocean of love in his heart...

And Audrey, wearing a luxurious gold gown, stands in an ocean of flowers like a fairy among them - exquisite and beautiful.

She covers her mouth, surprised and moved.

After putting on the expensive engagement ring, the two embrace tightly together.

Their love is true and deep; they are truly made for each other.

Janet stares at her phone and unconsciously murmurs these words through clenched teeth: "Made for each other..."

"Sis, what's wrong?" Emma sees her sister's dazed expression full of sadness. She can't help but ask: "You look so sad..."

Emma sits up from the hospital bed and grabs Janet's hand.

"Are you tired?"

"No..." Janet comes back to herself quickly. She hurriedly hides her loneliness behind a smile. "I'm just lost in thought. Maybe because I didn't sleep well last night."

"Then go rest first." Emma says: "I'm fine here by myself at the hospital. I'm used to taking care of myself."

Emma was born prematurely and has been weak since then. The hospital is like her second home.

Four years ago, she had heart problems that required surgery but all their savings had been exhausted from years of treatment already; they even sold their house but still couldn't afford it.

Janet had nowhere to turn and sought out Louis. They signed an agreement: one person provided the money, the other did the work. And so it went for four years... Janet recalled every moment of those four years, feeling as though it was all a dream. Now that she had woken up, all that remained was cold reality.

That man who always looked down on her never once met her gaze. Those four years they spent together were nothing more than a sexual release and a transaction.

"Sis..." Emma held onto Janet's fingers tightly. "Why are you crying?"

"What?" Janet snapped back to reality in shock and touched her face, finding it wet with tears.

"Is something wrong?" Emma asked worriedly. "You've been absent-minded these past few days; is there something you're hiding from me?"

"No..." Janet replied. "I'm just worried about you because you suddenly got a high fever these past few days."

Emma's body had finally gotten better after some time but then she developed pneumonia again and ran another high fever, landing herself back in the hospital once more.

Janet truly feared for her sister's safety.

"I'll be fine," said Emma reassuringly. "My body is like this; not getting sick would be abnormal for me. You should go rest now; Sean will come take care of me later."

Sean Taylor was Emma's boyfriend whom she met two years ago at the hospital when they fell in love at first sight despite all of her illnesses big or small along with his attentive care towards her over time.

Their relationship was excellent, having already set their wedding date for tomorrow in springtime by the seaside location they both loved so much..

"Okay, then I'll go back first," Janet said. She hadn't slept well these past few days and was feeling unwell due to the emotional turmoil. She didn't resist leaving the hospital this time.

As she was leaving, she bumped into Sean at the hospital entrance.

"Janet!" Sean smiled brightly. "Are you leaving already? I brought pork rib soup for you to drink before you go."

"No need..." Janet smiled. "I'm not hungry."

Before she could finish her sentence, her vision suddenly went black and her knees gave out, causing her to collapse onto the ground.
