Chapter 3 The Princess of the Spades Tribe
"You rogue!"
Fuming, Areli nearly flipped her desk over. Over the years, she had seen many scoundrels, but never someone as shameless as Darnell. He was not only uneducated but also full of lewd and obscene language, making her overlook Darnell's excellent language skills.
She slammed her hand on the desk and shouted, "Get out!"
She also yelled to Lillian, "Lillian, get this scoundrel out of here! How could you bring someone like him for an interview?"
Lillian was almost in tears. "Miss Fanshaw, I'm sorry. I'll explain later."
Then she went to pull Darnell away. "You need to leave now."
When Lillian saw Darnell so confident back then, she thought he might work some miracle. However, not only did he fail miserably in the interview, he also angered Areli. She could already foresee Areli reprimanding her, so she couldn't be bothered to blame Darnell.
"Hey, Miss Fanshaw, you can't do this," Darnell protested with an innocent look on his face, flailing his hands. "Weren't we having a good conversation just now? You quoted famous sayings, and I responded well with references. You should see that I'm knowledgeable. We share common interests. Why are you kicking me out?"
"Is it because you don't know enough about me? Let's talk more then."
"Charlie Quelch once said, 'I am always rebellious, but for you, I will surrender in bed...'"
Areli's pretty face turned even angrier. She pointed at the door furiously. "Get out!"
Before Darnell could respond, the office door was suddenly pushed open by a middle-aged man in a white shirt with an imposing manner. He had a big belly and a cigar in his mouth, accompanied by several men and women. He walked in with an air of arrogance, like an emperor inspecting his territory.
Among them was an ordinarily dressed woman in her twenties, with a broad forehead, a straight nose, white teeth, and bright eyes under well-shaped brows, exuding the purity of a girl.
Her demeanor carried a touch of nobility.
Darnell's eyes showed a hint of interest. This woman was clearly no ordinary character.
Sensing some drama unfolding, he stepped back into a corner to watch.
Seeing the door pushed open without notice made Areli's already bad mood worse. Her pretty face turned cold as she stared at the middle-aged man and spoke icily,
"Mr. Gower, don't you know to knock before entering?"
The middle-aged man was Roberto, the deputy general manager of Spectrum Pharmaceuticals's Whiteville branch, Areli's archenemy.
Hearing Areli's unfriendly tone, Roberto chuckled indifferently and replied, "My apologies, but I have urgent business with you, Miss Fanshaw. Please be magnanimous."
"If you can tolerate your boyfriend cheating on you, this is nothing."
Areli coldly retorted, "If you have something to say, say it clearly. Otherwise, get out."
Although Roberto was an old hand in the company, Areli still showed no mercy. It was precisely because of her sharpness that she barely managed to keep these people in check.
Otherwise, her position would have long been taken by Roberto.
"Alright then, let's get down to business."
As Darnell scrutinized the woman, Roberto stepped forward and pulled out a chair to sit down before pointing at the woman and said,
"Half an hour ago, this young lady came to us holding a list of medicines from our competitor, Pioneer Properties."
"She said something that seemed like she had some demands."
"But we couldn't understand her language. None of our interpreters could make sense of it. I wanted to kick her out, but I thought you have been to many countries and might understand her language, so I brought her here."
"The market competition is fierce right now, especially since Adventure Industries left us. Our branch office's performance has plummeted. Even a small client helps."
Areli glanced at the African woman before looking back at Roberto with a sneer. "You're just trying to embarrass me with her presence, aren't you?"
"I can see right through your little schemes."
"And if she really were a client, would you bring her to me? With your personality, you'd have already found a bunch of interpreters to talk to her."
"Roberto, are your days too boring? Do you realize you're wasting both your time and mine?"
"If you have time to watch me make a fool of myself, why not find more clients and secure some big deals?"
She saw through Roberto's intentions immediately. He must have judged that the African woman was a huge client and brought her here to embarrass her due to language barriers.
Roberto laughed heartily before shrugging. "I'm not making things difficult for you. You misunderstood me, Miss Fanshaw."
"This lady might be a potential client. Bringing her here is for the company's benefit."
"Miss Fanshaw, since you always claim to work for the company's good, isn't it right for you to communicate with this client?"
As Darnell frowned at Roberto's cunning nature, Areli ignored Roberto and looked up at the anxious African woman with a bright smile.
"Miss, I'm Areli Fanshaw from Spectrum Pharmaceuticals. How can I help you?"
The African woman realized everyone was looking at her and excitedly spoke up.
As the woman's words fell, Areli was stunned.
This seems like some indigenous African language. No amount of studying abroad could prepare one for this.
Knowing she couldn't communicate and realizing it would be hard to find such an interpreter quickly, she said regretfully in English, "I'm sorry. I can't help you with this."
Roberto taunted, "So even Miss Fanshaw doesn't understand? I thought you knew everything. After all, you're so knowledgeable!"
His subordinates also snickered.
The African woman understood "sorry" and guessed Areli's meaning. Her expression became more anxious.
Areli felt embarrassed, guessing that the woman had something urgent, but she couldn't help.
She contemplated asking translation companies for help when suddenly there was a crunching sound like teeth biting something off.
Lillian shuddered. It was Darnell...
At that moment, Darnell approached leisurely from the corner while munching on a carrot. He started to communicate with the woman in the indigenous African language.
Areli was stunned again.
Darnell walked up like a white knight standing before the African woman as he continued.
The African woman's body trembled instantly upon hearing those words. Her face lit up with joy as she hugged Darnell tightly and even kissed him publicly.
She seemed overjoyed, holding onto Darnell's arm while jumping up and down oddly before kissing his cheek twice more.
Roberto's group instinctively leaned back, showing undisguised disgust.
Oblivious to their reaction, the African woman let go of Darnell while chattering away excitedly, involving some hand gestures too.
To Areli's surprise, Darnell responded fluently without hesitation using the woman's language.
Lillian stood there dumbfounded.
"Damn! This is unbelievable," muttered Roberto disdainfully, disappointed, for not seeing Areli embarrass herself. Was this man from prehistoric times? How could he know such an incomprehensiblelanguage?
Then he rose from his chair, saying sarcastically, "Miss Fanshaw, she's yours now. Enjoy yourself."
“Miss Fanshaw, she's the princess of the Spades Tribe.”
Just as Roberto's group laughed heartily heading out, their smiles froze hearing Darnell suddenly announce,
“She wants five million dollars' worth of pharmaceuticals.”
