Three

Toyin bit her bottom lip as tears rushed to her eyes. She would always take Femi’s insult, but once he called her ‘Four Eyes’ she wouldn’t be able to stand it. Toyin shot up from her seat “May thunder strike you down” Toyin bellowed as she ran out of the class.

Something flashed in Femi’s eyes before a bored look came on his face.

“She keeps crying each time, this is getting boring” Femi said as he yawned.

Everyone watched as Femi opened her locker and placed the novel inside neatly before strolling out of the class.

Toyin ran to the female restroom and she rushed into one of the toilets and locked the door. Toyin fell to her knees as tears ran down her cheeks. After been caught up in a sandstorm when she was five, Toyin discovered she couldn’t see well as everything became blurry to her.

Her parents had rushed her to the hospital in alarm and since then, she had to use her glasses, she could barely see without them. This was Toyin’s sore spot as it made her feel immobile, not being able to see without her glasses made Toyin feel like a lame girl who used walking stick to walk.

If a normal person had made this statement, the highest she would do was to get angry and engage in an argument with such a person, sometimes she even ignored such people. But when someone she had liked since she could remember kept repeating such words, tears would rush to her cheeks.

For the past one year, Femi had addressed her as ‘Four Eyes’. Even her number in his phone was stored at Four Eyes. Even after being called that for over a year, Toyin hasn’t gotten used to it. Each time, tears would rush to her eyes. She couldn’t wrap her head as to why Femi hated her.

They were good classmates in junior secondary school but everything changed when they resumed for SS1 second term. And up to now, Femi had never stopped even for a day, it was his job every day to make her cry and see how much he loathed her.

Toyin managed to stand on her feet as she opened the door and walked one of the sinks. She carefully removed her glasses and placed them beside the sink before opening the tap and slashing water on her face. Toyin wiped her face with the towels placed beside the sink as she hurried wore her glasses back.

Another side effect, the sandstorm had on her was, Toyin couldn’t part with her glasses for long. She would become dizzy and the images would become blurrier and she could faint and anything could happen. Toyin glanced at herself in the mirror as she managed to smile.

Toyin found herself staring a chocolate skinned girl in the mirror. The girl had thin but long brows but perfectly accented her small sized eyes. The girl’s smile was beautiful and her mouth was pulled in a beautiful arc, even the glasses on her face complimented her round face and made her look prettier.
