Chapter 5 I Promise You
Maximilian was somewhat swollen and stunned as he watched Victoria’s strange gaze lingering over himself.
“Why are you still here? And this old gentleman, who is he?’
Victoria looked unpleasant. She was not very good to Maximilian. After all, during the past four years, she had suffered from contempt and ridicule from others because of him, and she had already given up hopes for him.
But now, Maximilian was actually standing next to a Rolls Royce car!
How could it be possible?
Maximilian scratched the back of his head awkwardly, his gaze on Wilfred, who was standing beside.
Wilfred immediately laughed and said, “Young man, thank you for showing me the way. I’ll leave first. In the future, if you need anything, just call me anytime.”
After saying that, Wilfred got into the car, and then the Rolls Royce eased out of the way.
Maximilian explained with a smile, “The old gentleman didn’t know his way around, so I showed him the way.”
Hearing his explanation, Victoria didn’t get suspicious about the whole matter.
As far as she knew, it was impossible for her husband to be a hidden rich second-generation.
At the moment, a sharp and unkind remark sounded, “Victoria, is this your husband, the wimp?”
The one who spoke was a gorgeous, stylishly dressed woman with big wavy hair and flaming red lips. She was wearing a pair of broad sunglasses, an edgy dress with black halter top and super-short white pants, highlighting her straight and slender legs that reflected moist white in the sunlight.
Victoria blushed slightly, and forced a smile. Then, she hooked the hair falling from her ears, and made the introduction.
“Well, his name is Maximilian, my...”
It seemed so hard for her to utter the word “husband”.
The woman folded her arms around her chest, making her bust more prominent, and snorted.
“Victoria, you’re too impulsive to marry such a worthless man. Did all the good men in the country die out?”
Leila, the daughter of the Thomson family, was an overseas returnee. She went abroad for further studies four years ago and had just returned home these days.
She couldn’t wait to meet Victoria’s good-for-nothing husband, but she didn’t expect to run into him today.
At a glance, he was indeed a loser.
Victoria didn’t explain further, and her eyes glanced at Maximilian with resentment. However, he looked indifferent.
Why didn’t he have any shame? If it wasn’t for him, she would not lose face in front of her girlfriends.
Maximilian smiled and said, “Victoria, I will go back to work. Sissi’s treatment has been settled and they will use my bone marrow.”
“Settled?” Victoria was a bit surprised and exclaimed, “How could Grandpa possibly agree to use your bone marrow?”
Maximilian explained, “The dean of this hospital said he needs to follow the rules and regulations.”
After saying that, he gave Leila a meaningful look before leaving.
As Maximilian left the hospital, Victoria was still a bit frustrated. She hurriedly ran into the hospital with her girlfriends to confirm the incident before she finally let out a sigh of relief.
“Victoria, divorce that wimp immediately. I will introduce some good guys to you. They are rich and powerful in H City. Besides, I also have some international friends who are handsome, rich, and sexually appealing.”
Inside the ward, standing by the side, Leila watched Victoria taking care of Sissi tenderly.
Lucie Harper, the other girl in the ward, chimed with her,
“Right, Victoria, it has been four years. I feel bad for you and it’s time for you to divorce him.”
Victoria was shocked for a moment, staring at Sissi who was already asleep on the hospital bed. She gently touched her bare forehead and said with moist eyes,
“No, I’m not going to divorce him. We’ve been married for four years. I cannot deny that we have feelings for each other. He will always be Sissi’s father, unless he doesn’t want us anymore.”
Upon hearing this, Leila stomped her foot in anger and said, “Victoria, why are you so stupid? What’s so great about that wimp?”
Victoria turned around and looked at Leila who was throwing a tantrum and said, “Well Leila, I know you say this for my good, but it’s my personal life.”
Leila wanted to say something but held her tongue.
Later, she continued, “It’s up to you, but I’ll spare no effort to break you up! You’re my best friend and I’m not going to let you get into deep water!”
Victoria didn’t say anything anymore.
She understood Leila was for her good and was just being nice to her.
However, her sentiments toward Maximilian made Victoria quite chaotic in her heart.
In the evening, Maximilian returned home with a bag of apples, and before he entered the door, he heard a noise inside the house.
“Victoria, you must listen to me on this matter. Go and divorce that wimp tomorrow! There is no room for him in the Griffith family!”
It was the voice of his mother-in-law, Laura, who sounded quite angry.
“Look at what that wimp has done in the hospital today. He embarrassed me so much. Everyone in H City must have known it by now.”
“You saw with your own eyes how he treated your grandpa Samuel today. He’s just pushing our family into the fire!”
“In a few days, it would be the mid-year gathering for the Griffith family. The company is going to elect a new vice president. At this critical point, Maximilian dared to be so disrespectful to Samuel. It is impossible for you to be elected. You must divorce him as soon as possible!”
Laura was fuming. She turned from the closed doorway of Victoria’s room and yelled in a tantrum at her husband Marcus, who was reading newspaper on the sofa.
Marcus lowered his head and pretended to read the newspaper seriously without making a sound.
He was a typical hen-pecked husband, with no status in the family at all. His wife, Laura, handled almost everything.
Moreover, he was born with a weak nature and couldn’t really hold up his head in front of Laura who was fierce.
When Marcus did not say a word, Laura became even angrier. She walked over, tore the newspaper out of his hand, scolding,
“Every day, you come home and all you know is to read newspapers. Why don’t you care about our family at all? Isn’t Victoria your daughter?”
Marcus said helplessly, “Of course I care, but we don’t have a final say on this matter. We have to ask Victoria.”
Laura didn’t care more. She immediately spilled out, yelling, “I don’t care. Our daughter must divorce that wimp. It has been four years, and our family has been laughed at by the entire city. Haven’t you had enough?”
Laura actually shed tears when she said those words. Later, she simply sat down on the sofa, crying bitterly.
“Marcus, if you’re still a man, you have to make up your mind on the spot on this matter! Our daughter has worked so hard, and now Sissi has leukemia. It is the wimp Maximilian’s fault!”
“She could have married into a wealthy and influential family and lived an affluent life. We could have followed her to enjoy the blessings. Are you willing to watch Victoria work so hard every day and put up with those relatives poking her back? You may feel nothing, but I’m already heartbroken!”
The Griffith family’s main scope of business in H City was medicinal herbs and medical devices. Victoria indeed had to go to factories, medicinal bases, and do marketing every day. It was not an easy job.
Moreover, due to her son-in-law Maximilian, their status in the Griffith family got worse day by day. According to rumors, none of Samuel’s legacy would be passed down to Victoria.
Upon hearing this, Marcus remained silent. After all, she was his biological daughter.
Marcus was just about to get up when Victoria, who had locked herself up in the room opened the door and walked into the living room.
She looked earnestly at the indignant Laura and sad Marcus and said, “Dad, Mom, I’m not going to divorce Maximilian!”
Hearing this, Laura became annoyed instantly, and then shouted, “Victoria, what nonsense are you talking about? If you don’t divorce him, you gonna keep that wimp in the house for the rest of your life?”
“Mom, I’m not talking nonsense. I love Maximilian. Even though I’ve been criticized and ridiculed by relatives and friends for the past four years because of him, he’s always my husband and Sissi’s father!”
“For four years, he has been silently guarding this home. Has there ever been any complaint from his mouth?”
“You despise him, Grandpa despises him, and everyone else despises him, but I don’t!”
Maximilian stood at the door with a bag of apples in his hand. He breathed heavily with emotions. His eyes were moist, and he looked up at the sky.
Deep in his heart, he was thrilled. It had been four years, and it turned out she had always loved him, regardless of the endless aggravation he brought to her. Why was this woman so stupid?
He had promised her a lifetime of prosperity, but now it seemed that all he had delivered her was endless trouble.
Maximilian squeezed his fist and revealed a resolute look, “Victoria, believe me. My promise will never change and I guarantee that you will become the happiest woman in this world!”
In the living room, Victoria had burst into tears, staring at Laura and Marcus with her beautiful eyes.
“Mom, dad, you don’t understand. I love him and I’ve been waiting for the day when he is able to officially tell anyone that he is Sissi’s father and Victoria’s husband...”
The room fell into a dead silence.
Although Laura still had resentment on her face, she couldn’t say anything else after hearing Victoria’s remarks.
Just then, Maximilian opened the door and stood in the doorway. A smile like a warm sunshine emerged at the corner of his mouth. He gazed at Victoria’s teary eyes, and strode toward her. Then he gently wiped away the tears at the corner of her eyes.
“Maximilian, will you promise me? For me and Sissi.”
“I don’t want to bear all the ridicule anymore. I don’t want Sissi to call you uncle anymore. I want everyone to know that you are Sissi’s father and my husband, not a wimp.”
Victoria’s eyes were reddened, and filled with tears.
“I promise you!” Maximilian said seriously, gave Victoria a tender glance, and walked away.
