CHAPTER EIGHT

CHAPTER 8 – The Darkening Spiral

Ariana’s POV

The next few days felt like a blur of restless nights and strained mornings. Victor’s words echoed in my head, his gaze never quite leaving me, even when he wasn’t around. Every glance, every moment spent in the same room with him felt heavier. He was always watching. And the more I tried to avoid him, the more he seemed to push himself into my life.

It wasn’t just Victor, though. Ethan and Luca had their own ways of pulling me into their orbit. Each of them was different, but equally suffocating. Ethan’s silence was no longer just cold; it was oppressive, like he was waiting for me to make a move, to choose him. Luca was reckless and impulsive, teasing me one moment and then possessive the next. He had no boundaries. They all had none.

But it was Victor who truly unsettled me. His presence was overwhelming. He didn’t just want my attention; he demanded it. And I couldn’t look away. No matter how much I wanted to.

I sat in my room, the blinds drawn, the silence of the house pressing in on me. Mom had gone out for some errand with Victor, leaving me alone with the brothers. I’d made my escape this morning by pretending to study, but it was already getting harder to pretend everything was fine. I felt like a prisoner in my own home.

My phone buzzed. I picked it up, hoping it was a distraction.

It was a text from Luca.

“Meet me tonight. Midnight. Garden. You know where.”

I stared at the message for a long time, my heart pounding in my chest. The last time I’d seen Luca outside the garden, it had been a confrontation. His words, his touch, had been too much, and I had fled.

But there it was again. The undeniable pull, the dark promise of something forbidden. And part of me couldn’t resist. Part of me wanted to see him, to face whatever this was between us. I’d been avoiding them all for so long, but the invitation felt like something I couldn’t ignore.

I glanced at the clock. Midnight was hours away, and yet I could already feel the weight of the decision pressing on me.

I didn’t know if I was ready, but I knew one thing: I was drawn to him. And I couldn’t keep running.

Later that night, I found myself standing in front of the glass doors that led to the garden. The cool air outside sent a chill down my spine, and yet, the idea of leaving the warmth of my room felt more terrifying than stepping into the dark.

The house was eerily quiet, but I could hear the faint rustle of leaves as the wind blew through the trees. I glanced over my shoulder, making sure I wasn’t being watched, then slipped outside into the night.

The moon was hidden behind clouds, leaving the garden in shadows. I walked carefully, the soft grass beneath my feet barely making a sound.

And then I saw him.

Luca stood near the old oak tree, the same place he had been before, his silhouette barely visible against the dark sky. He was watching me, waiting. His posture was casual, but the tension in the air was thick enough to cut with a knife.

“Ariana,” he said softly, his voice low and almost like a whisper, though the night was quiet enough that I could hear him clearly.

I hesitated, unsure of how to respond. “Luca,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

He took a step toward me, his dark eyes never leaving mine. “You came.”

“I didn’t know if I should,” I admitted, feeling the heat rise in my cheeks. “I don’t know what you want from me.”

Luca’s lips quirked up into a half smile. “I want what I’ve wanted since the moment you stepped into this house.”

I felt a cold shiver run down my spine. “What do you mean?”

His smile grew darker, and he stepped closer, his presence overwhelming. “I want you, Ariana,” he said, his voice thick with something darker than desire. “I’ve wanted you since the moment I laid eyes on you. But the game... the game’s changed now.”

“What game?” I asked, my heart racing.

“The one we’re all playing,” he said, his voice low, as if he were speaking a secret only the two of us could understand. “Victor’s been watching you. Ethan’s been watching you. But I’m the one who’s been paying attention. I’m the one who’s been noticing every little thing about you.”

“I don’t want this,” I whispered, shaking my head. “I don’t want any of this.”

Luca stepped closer, his breath warm on my face. “Don’t pretend, Ariana. You want it. You’ve been running from it, but you can’t ignore it. You can’t ignore us.”

I felt trapped, my pulse hammering in my throat. “I can’t... I don’t...”

Before I could finish, Luca’s fingers brushed lightly against my cheek, sending a wave of heat rushing through my body. My mind screamed at me to step back, to leave, to run, but my body betrayed me, standing frozen in place.

“I can feel it, Ariana,” Luca murmured, his voice low and rough. “I know you feel it too.”

His hand slid down to my neck, his thumb brushing over the pulse that raced there. I wanted to push him away, to tell him to stop, but the words were stuck in my throat.

Luca’s lips brushed against my ear, his breath sending shivers down my spine. “This is what you wanted, whether you admit it or not. All of this. Me. Ethan. Victor.”

I turned my face away, my breath shallow. “This is wrong,” I said weakly. “This is all wrong.”

Luca’s hand stilled on my neck. For a moment, he didn’t speak. The air between us crackled with tension. And then, quietly, he said, “You think I care if it’s wrong?”

I opened my mouth to speak, but before I could, I heard the unmistakable sound of footsteps approaching. The blood drained from my face, and I jerked back from Luca.

“Someone’s coming,” I whispered, panic rising in my chest.

Luca stepped back, his expression unreadable, and turned to face the shadowed figure that appeared on the path.

It was Ethan.
