CHAPTER ONE: The Shattering Betrayal

Ariana’s POV

The first thing I noticed about Dr. Victor Sterling’s mansion was how quiet it was.

Too quiet.

Mom had insisted we come early so I could “get familiar with the place” before the move, but all I felt was a tightness in my chest as we stepped into the grand hallway. Marble floors, tall windows, paintings that probably cost more than my entire college tuition.

Mom disappeared with Victor to sign some papers.

“Just look around, sweetheart,” she told me.

Right. Like this was supposed to feel like home.

I wandered deeper into the house, running my fingers along the polished railing. It was so perfect it felt… fake. Like a place where secrets hid behind every spotless corner.

That’s when I heard it.

A thud.

A soft gasp.

A whisper.

I froze.

Then the voice came again low, commanding, angry.

“Did you really think I wouldn’t find out?”

My breath caught.

Someone was here.

I moved quietly down the hallway until I reached a half open door.

what I saw, got more of my attention and shocked.

Ethan Sterling tall, broad shouldered, had a girl pinned against the wall with one arm braced beside her head. His body caged her in completely, leaving her no space to breathe, much less escape.

Her hair fell over her face.

Emily.

My best friend.

I felt something inside break.

“E-Emily?” I whispered before I could stop myself.

Ethan’s head jerked slightly, but he didn’t turn around yet. He kept his arm against the wall, blocking her.

Emily’s eyes flew to mine.

She looked terrified.

Not guilty.

Not embarrassed.

Terrified.

Her lips parted like she wanted to speak beg maybe but then something shifted behind her eyes.

Recognition.

Panic.

Then… calculation.

“No, Ariana,” she said, her voice suddenly soft, breathy. “It’s not....don’t be mad.”

Mad?

What?

Before I could react, Emily slid her hands up Ethan’s chest hesitant but pretending confidence and gave me a shaky smile.

“As you can see… it’s not what it looks like.”

But it wasn’t what she was pretending at all.

Her hands were trembling.

Her smile was wrong.

False.

Forced.

A lie.

A lie to protect herself.

A lie to protect him.

Ethan finally turned toward me.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

His eyes locked onto mine dark, unreadable, a storm with no warning signs. He stepped slightly back from Emily, but the tension in the room didn’t ease. It sharpened.

“Ariana,” he said in a low, controlled voice. “Didn’t expect to see you here yet.”

I swallowed hard.

“What… what were you doing to her?”

Emily laughed too loud, too bright. “Ariana, don’t make it weird. We were just"

“Talking,” Ethan finished, his gaze still pinned on me, intense enough to make my skin prickle. “Your friend is dramatic.”

Dramatic?

Emily looked like she’d seen a ghost two seconds ago.

My pulse raced.

Something felt wrong.

Very wrong.

But Emily shook her head almost imperceptibly, silently begging me not to question it.

I stepped back.

“Okay,” I whispered, though nothing felt okay at all.

Ethan’s eyes followed me until I slipped out of the doorway, his stare heavy, unreadable, unsettling. Emily stood frozen behind him, clutching her arms, her breathing uneven.

I walked away on shaky legs, but the image kept replaying in my mind:

Ethan’s arm caging her in.

Emily’s fear.

Her sudden fake smile.

His dark eyes when he finally turned toward me.

I didn’t know what I had walked in on.

But I knew one thing for certain:

I had just witnessed something I wasn’t supposed to see.

And whatever it was…

it had changed everything.
