Chapter 3: The Wildfire and the Cage

POV: Alexandria

The elevator doors hiss open, and the penthouse swallows us whole.

Belcher’s arm bands around my waist, hauling me over the threshold like I’m nothing more than a spoil of war. My heels scrape the polished marble, the sound instantly swallowed by the vast, suffocating silence of the suite.

Floor-to-ceiling glass walls frame the Golden Gate Bridge, its lights glittering against the black water of the bay. The view is a masterpiece. It also feels exactly like a cage suspended above the city.

"Belcher," I gasp, my lungs burning, the heavy satin of my wedding dress clinging to my sweat-dampened skin. "I need air."

"You’ll breathe when I say you breathe." His voice vibrates straight through my ribs.

I twist in his grip, glaring up at him. "Is that the new rule in my cage? Do I need permission for oxygen now?"

He doesn’t answer with words. Instead, he steps into my space, completely crowding my senses. He smells of premium scotch, cedarwood, and the crisp, damp San Francisco night air.

With one fluid motion, he strips off his tailored tuxedo jacket, tossing it onto a leather chair.

My breath fumbles.

Underneath, the white dress shirt does nothing to hide the warlord beneath the groom. A leather holster cut across his broad shoulders, the black handles of his pistol gleaming under the chandelier light.

"See something you like, Sweet Thicki?" he asks, a dark smirk tugging at his lips.

"I see a monster wearing a suit," I spit, my chin lifting. "I married a kidnapper with a priest."

He laughs. Actually laughs. It’s a rough, dark sound that scrapes against my nerves. "You’re the first woman who’s ever been this honest with me on her wedding night. Usually, they pretend."

"Maybe they’re smarter than me."

"No." He closes the distance, his knuckles brushing the heavy gold collar locked around my throat. The metal is cold, a stark contrast to the burning heat of his skin. "They’re cowards. You? You’re a wildfire I intend to contain."

My spine hits the freezing glass of the window. The city sprawls beneath us, tiny and helpless. His reflection looms behind mine, massive and predatory.

"This isn’t a marriage," I whisper, my hands pressing flat against the glass, searching for an anchor. "It’s a hostage situation."

"Call it whatever helps you sleep tonight," he murmurs, his breath scorching my ear. "But you will sleep in my bed. You will wake in my sheets. And every time you look in the mirror, you’ll see my mark around your pretty throat."

"Go to hell."

"Already there." His hand slides up, fingers threading into my hair, gripping the nape of my neck. "And I’m taking you with me."

He crashes his mouth down on mine.

It isn’t a kiss. It’s an execution.

It’s hot, brutal, and entirely consuming. His tongue forces past my lips, tasting of wine and absolute authority. I shove at his chest, my palms striking the solid wall of muscle beneath his shirt.

"Stop," I gasp against his mouth, but the word is fractured, ruined by the erratic stutter of my own pulse.

"You think you get to command me?" He pulls back just a fraction, his eyes flashing like storm clouds. "You think you get to say stop?"

"I’m not your possession," I glare, though my chest heaves, betraying the oxygen starvation.

His eyes drop to my lips, a dark, possessive hunger flaring to life. "You’re mine. Every inch."

He spins me, pressing me harder against the glass. His hand pins both my wrists above my head in an iron vice. The gold collar bites into my collarbone, a heavy, suffocating reminder of my reality.

"Say it," he commands, his voice dropping to a lethal octave.

"Say what?"

"That you’re mine."

I shake my head, tears of pure frustration pricking my eyes. "I’ll never…"

His free hand slides down, gripping my hip with bruising force, pulling my lower body flush against his. A traitorous jolt of electricity shoots straight down my spine.

My mind is screaming at me to fight, to claw at his eyes, to scream for help. *I hate him. I hate this. I hate that my knees are weakening.* But my body... my body is listening to a completely different frequency. Heat pools low in my stomach, a primal, chaotic desire that makes me want to vomit and arch into him all at once.

I hate myself. I hate how my hips instinctively shift against him.

Belcher feels it. A mocking, triumphant smile touches his lips. "Your mouth lies, Alexandria. But your body knows exactly who it belongs to."

"You're sick," I choke out, a tear finally slipping free to track down my temple.

"I’m thorough," he corrects softly. His thumb brushes the wet tear away, his touch surprisingly gentle, which somehow makes it infinitely more terrifying. "I know everything about you.” his lips grazing my jawline, trailing down to the gold collar. He presses a reverent, terrifying kiss directly to the metal. "Your past is an open book. Your future is a locked safe. And I’m the only one with the combination."

He releases my wrists, only to slide his hands down my arms, leaving a trail of goosebumps in their wake. He lifts me effortlessly, my legs instinctively wrapping around his waist as he carries me away from the glass. The world spins; chandelier, shadows, the massive king-sized bed; before my back hits a mattress so soft it swallows me whole.

He looms over me, a predator admiring his trapped prey.

"Why are you doing this?" I whisper, hating how shaky my voice sounds. "You don’t even know me."

"I know you have fire," he says, his gaze dropping to my chest as the straps of my dress slip. "Real fire. This world will eat you alive if you’re weak. But you’re not weak. You’re just untrained."

"So this is training?"

"This is initiation."

He lowers his head, his mouth claiming mine again. This time, I don’t just let him. I kiss him back. I pour every ounce of my rage, my fear, and my confusion into the kiss, biting his lip hard enough to taste copper.

He groans, a deep, primal sound that rumbles through his chest and into mine. His hands are everywhere; my hips, my thighs, the curve of my waist. Every touch is a brand. Every whisper against my skin is a chain locking me tighter into this gilded cage.

The storm breaks, a chaotic blur of silk sheets, whispered threats, and a pleasure so dark and consuming it shatters my sanity.

When the world finally stops spinning, I lie tangled in the ruins of my wedding dress, my body aching, marked, and utterly spent.

Belcher shifts his weight, pinning me into the mattress. He locks both my wrists above my head with one hand, his grip an unbreakable iron vice. His blue eyes burn with a possessive madness, stripping away every last illusion of my freedom.

He leans down, his lips brushing the shell of my ear, his voice a dark, vibrating growl that seals my fate.

"You belong to the Morelle empire now, Alexandria. Every breath, every drop of sweat, is mine.”
