Chapter 2: The Devil’s Golden Collar
POV: Alexandria
The reception at the Morelle mansion is a blur of clinking champagne flutes and blinding camera flashes. I stand frozen in a sea of black tuxedos and blood-red gowns, suffocating under the weight of a hundred calculating stares.
This isn’t a wedding. It’s an acquisition.
"Smile, Sweet Thicki," a low, rough voice murmurs against my ear.
Belcher.
He materializes from the stairs, his massive frame blocking out the chandelier light. He doesn't just walk; he commands the space, parting the crowd like the Red Sea. Men twice his age drop their gazes. Women whisper nervously behind gloved hands. The terrifying power dynamics of this room are on full display, and I am the centerpiece.
"It's time for our first dance," he says.
It’s not a request. His hand clamps around my wrist, his grip a vice of bruising, possessive intensity. He drags me to the center of the marble ballroom. The string quartet shifts into a dark, sensual waltz. The underworld of San Francisco forms a perfect, silent circle around us, phones raised to document their king claiming his ultimate trophy.
"Put your hand on my shoulder," he commands.
I obey, my fingers brushing the expensive wool of his jacket, feeling the coiled, lethal muscle beneath. His other hand finds my hip.
Not gently. Not politely.
His palm slides down the bare skin of my open-back dress, his calloused fingers digging into my flesh with a proprietary grip that steals the breath from my lungs.
"Closer," he murmurs, his lips brushing the shell of my ear.
"I'm already…"
He yanks me flush against his chest. The impact knocks a soft gasp from my throat. My breasts press flat against the hard wall of his torso. The scent of cedarwood, expensive scotch, and strange aroma fills my senses.
"Now everyone can see," he whispers.
"See what?" I manage to choke out, my heart hammering against my ribs.
"That you're mine."
His thigh pushes between my legs with every turn of the waltz. The friction sparks an unwanted, electric heat low in my belly. I hate him. I hate him for the threats at the altar, for the bruising grip on my wrist, for the way his thumb now traces slow, maddening circles against my hipbone.
But my body is a traitor.
Heat blooms under my skin, treacherous and primal. My pulse races in places it has no business racing. When his grip tightens, pulling me impossibly closer, a small, breathless sound escapes my lips.
Belcher notices. Of course he notices.
"Your heart is racing, Alexandria," he rumbles, his blue eyes stripping away every layer of my defiance. "I can feel it pounding against my chest."
"You're hurting me," I whisper, trying to pull back.
"Am I?" His thumb presses harder into my skin. "Or are you just terrified of how much you don't hate this?"
I glare up at him, fire flashing in my eyes. "You're a monster."
"And you're trembling," he counters smoothly, his gaze dropping to my lips before snapping back to my eyes. "But not from fear."
*He’s right, and I want to die.* My body is betraying me in the worst possible way, responding to his dominance with a chaotic hunger that makes me despise myself.
"Look at them," Belcher says, spinning me so I face the crowd. His chest presses against my back, his arm banding around my waist like an iron cage. "Every capo, every underboss, every rival family watching from the shadows. They're all wondering the same thing."
"What's that?" I whisper.
"How long before I break you."
His teeth graze my earlobe, and I jolt as if struck by lightning.
"But they don't understand," he continues, his hand splaying flat against my stomach, holding me captive against him. "I don't want to break you. I want to own you. Every breath. Every heartbeat. Every traitorous little shiver when I touch you."
The music builds toward its sweeping crescendo. The violins scream. The cameras flash like lightning strikes. Through it all, Belcher holds me in his iron grip, forcing me to feel every inch of his absolute dominance.
Then, the music stops.
Applause erupts, sharp and hollow. But Belcher doesn't release me. He keeps me anchored against his chest, his hand sliding up to trace the line of my throat.
"We're not done," he says.
"Please, I need a minute…"
"You need nothing except what I give you."
He reaches into his jacket pocket and pulls out a sleek black box. He flips it open with his thumb.
Gold catches the chandelier light, casting a warm, heavy glow across his knuckles.
My stomach drops into a bottomless abyss.
It’s a necklace. But not like any I’ve ever seen. The links are thick, solid, and intricately woven. It’s beautiful. It’s medieval.
It’s a collar.
"No," I breathe, stumbling backward, but his arm bands around my waist, holding me in place. "Belcher, no. Not in front of them…"
"Hold still," he commands, his voice dropping to a dangerous, lethal octave that brooks no argument.
He steps behind me. I feel the cold, heavy weight of the solid gold settle against my collarbones. His knuckles brush my throat as he works the clasp. I’m paralyzed, frozen by the sheer, humiliating audacity of what he’s doing in front of the entire city's elite.
Click.
The collar locks.
It’s heavy. So heavy I can feel it with every shallow breath, pressing against my windpipe. A constant, physical reminder. A brand.
"Beautiful," Belcher murmurs, spinning me around to face him. His eyes trace the line of gold against my pale skin with a dark, twisted reverence. "Do you know what this is?"
"A prison," I spit, my hands flying up to claw at the unbreakable metal.
"A declaration." He reaches into his pocket again, producing a tiny, silver key. It glints in the low light, no bigger than my pinky nail. "This collar hasn't been worn by a Morelle bride in three generations. My grandmother wore it. My great-grandmother before her."
"I don't care about your sick traditions!" I hiss, tears of pure frustration pricking my eyes.
"You should." He holds the key up between us, letting it catch the light one last time. "Because this little piece of metal is the only thing that can remove it."
Before I can lunge for it, he slips the tiny key directly into his breast pocket. Right over his heart.
He pats the pocket twice, a dark, triumphant smile curving his lips as he looks down at me.
