Chapter 2: His Bite
Next thing I know, I was crawling on the forest floor begging for this man to help me. My nails that had turned into claws scratched the surface of the earth as I screamed for help.
I looked at the man before me who was watching me writhing in agony with no care in the world. The bright moon highlighted his features. His eyes were glowing gold in the darkness. They were filled with abhorrence that I have no idea why.
As time passed, I knew what I was becoming. A monster, a beast that was only read in books. I have read them countless times because I’ve heard them countless times. My curiosity consumed me and so I cannot help but read about it. It hadn’t crossed my mind that there could be a possibility that they’re real.
This man before me bit me in the shoulder. He didn’t let go until blackness consumed me. Now, screaming and writhing on the forest floor because I was turning into one. They’re real. He’s one of those beasts.
And this beast before loathes me.
—
My eyes fluttered open. It danced around, noticing I was in an unfamiliar room. I try to sit up, groaning in pain when I feel numb and exhausted. My body felt heavy and my head ached like it been slammed against a concrete wall. There was a slight pain in my chest, too, which I already knew why.
“You’re awake.” I turned to the source of the voice– an old woman who seemed to be in her late sixties with graying hair in a bun. She had a short stature, maybe about my height.
She walked towards me with a tray of food in her hand. She sat beside my bed and offered me the food she brought. “You must be hungry.”
“Where am I?” I asked while trying to recall what happened. Bits and pieces of memories started to flash in my head. My heart was hammering loud when I finally puzzled it together.
She pursed her lips before finally deciding to speak although with hesitation. “You’re in our pack.”
My ears rang at the mention of a certain word. It made it more real. I waited for my usual panic attack or that excruciating pain in my chest but it didn’t happen. There was only an uneven breathing and somewhat prickle in the heart.
Tears were pooling in my eyes as I looked at her. “Pack?” I whimper. “Wh-where? What… what happened?” I almost sobbed while asking but crying will not give me a direct answer.
She sighs before speaking. “I will not delay the truth. Our alpha bit you and turned you into one of us– a werewolf. You’re in his pack now. The Blood Moon.”
“No. No, no, no.” I shook my head incessantly, covering them with both of my hands as I screamed.
I knew I wasn’t crazy. It wasn’t a dream either. I could still see them in my memories so vividly, even the face of that man. With his oozing power, I now know he’s the alpha.
“This isn’t happening! This is impossible!” I deny. “This is just a dream. This is just a dream.” I cried.
I felt a hand on my arm. It successfully made me stop. I saw her looking at me pitifully. I breathed deeply. It reminded me of him. His look of hatred that was so opposite of hers.
“I don’t understand why this is happening.” I sobbed. “Please tell me it isn’t true. Tell me it’s just a dream.”
She squeezed my arm and looked down. I saw the guilty look on her face.
“You should eat.” She said, ignoring my plea. I stared at her with wide eyes, tears flowing like a river.
“Please… just tell me what I’m doing here. Tell me why this is happening to me.” I begged in between my cries.
She continued to look at me like I’m the most pitiful being right now before she rose to her feet and left me in the room.
Why is this happening to me?
Darkness finally consumed the room and although my stomach was already hurting from hunger, I didn’t have the appetite to eat. The old woman who had introduced herself as Rose the second time she came back, brought another food for me. She heaved a sigh when she noticed that I didn’t touch the food she brought. She tried to convince me to eat and just like what she did to me, I ignored her. I just laid down on the bed, my back facing her.
I kept closing my eyes and then opened it multiple times. I even tried to sleep just to wake up and checked everything was not real. But it is. I cried again at the crushing reality.
A beast had kidnapped me.
I don’t know if anyone was actually guarding outside my door. I was too afraid to find out and I was afraid to go outside. I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m scared shitless.
I kept remembering that night over and over again like a broken record, especially the way his eyes observed me. He’s an alpha. Of course he is, considering his aura almost devoured me whole the moment I saw him in front of our door.
Sleep consumed me completely and when I woke up, it was early in the morning. My stomach ached the moment I sat up. I glanced at the food that was still available on the table beside my bed. I knew it was no longer edible.
I jumped when the door suddenly opened. Rose’s smile greeted me and I looked away.
I heard her sigh. “You still haven’t eaten.” I looked at her again and saw that her arms were crossed to her chest, seemingly scolding me like one of her children.
I returned her look with nonchalance and blankness. I’m exhausted from crying. I’m famished because I’m too stubborn to eat. I’m afraid that either they’d kill me or my heart will, knowing there’s pins and needles every now and then.
This woman was kind to me. I don’t know if I should appreciate it but anger was all I felt. She didn’t answer my question and what’s more, she’s one of them.
“Come, dear. Let’s get you breakfast.” She said while reaching her hand. I could see her hand in front of me despite trying to ignore her while looking down.
I didn’t move. I didn’t speak.
I was stunned when she suddenly placed her hand on top of mine. “I know you’re scared. You feel a lot of emotions right now that I might not understand… but for now, please put your faith in me. I will protect you, darling. No matter what.”
I finally raised my head and looked at her. Our eyes met. I saw her sincerity and care. I find it hard to believe that she was one of the few people who had shown me that despite what she is… despite what her alpha did to me.
Tears started to pool my eyes as I nod.
