Chapter 3 The Crisis of the Hospital Dean Resolved
Emerging from the operating room, Alisa approached, tightly gripping Maggie's hand while expressing gratitude to the surgeon.
At that moment, the assistant to the dean appeared, a cheerful smile on his face. "Congratulations on the successful surgery, Maggie. Why don't you take some time to rest and lie down? It can increase the chances of a positive outcome."
Considering the financial impact, Maggie hesitated. Staying in the hospital bed came with additional costs due to its upscale nature.
To their surprise, the dean's assistant arranged a luxurious VIP suite for Maggie, complete with a range of facilities designed to maximize the patient's comfort.
Alisa felt a sense of unease. The room's cost had skyrocketed to staggering heights, exceeding several thousand dollars a day. She had never seen the hospital offer such lavish benefits before. However, when she saw Maggie's peaceful face slowly entering a calm sleep, Alisa chose to keep her reservations.
Seeing Maggie in good condition, the dean's assistant in the corner of the room breathed a sigh of relief.
He hurriedly went to report to the dean.
Meanwhile, inside the dean's office, the dean wiped the sweat from his forehead, his hands trembling slightly, struggling to maintain his composure in front of Aldrich, a formidable man. The hospital's future and his own reputation weighed heavily on his shoulders.
Aldrich exuded an aura of power and authority as he leaned back in his chair, his sharp gaze fixated on the dean. The deep furrows on his forehead revealed impatience.
"Walliams," Aldrich began, his voice tinged with urgency, "You assured me that you would resolve the issue of my offspring as soon as possible, and that's why I gave you this opportunity."
The dean replied with a quavering voice, acutely aware of Aldrich's concealed expectations. "I'm afraid we haven't made any breakthroughs, Mr. Barrett. Despite our efforts, with our current means, we haven't found a suitable candidate."
Aldrich narrowed his eyes, his controlled demeanor hinting at disappointment.
"This is unacceptable," he retorted, his voice laced with both disappointment and determination. "I've invested a significant amount of resources in this institution. I don't want to waste any more time."
Aldrich was the Alpha of The BlueMoon Pack, one of the two werewolf tribes in the North continent, the other being The FrostMoon Pack. Currently, Aldrich and the prince of The FrostMoon Pack, Ethan Frostbourne, were competing for the throne of the North continent. To prepare for the election a year later, Aldrich urgently needed offspring. The Election Committee refused to vote for Alphas without children to become the new king. However, the fact that Aldrich had no children was only half the problem; he also didn't have a mate or a Luna— at least, not yet.
"Walliams, if you can't find a suitable recipient for my sperm, I will immediately withdraw all hospital investments and seek a more reputable institution." The dean realized that at this moment, he had to provide an accurate answer. Sweat slid down his forehead, and he was almost begging, "Mr. Barrett, we've already matched over five thousand gene samples, as you know, your genes are quite unique. Although we haven't found a match yet, please trust us…"
Just as the tension reached its peak, the dean's assistant knocked on the office door, full of excitement, and quickly whispered something to the dean.
The dean took a deep breath, accepting the gene testing report that was handed to him. A sense of relief washed over him as his trembling hands steadied, and he felt as though a heavy burden had been lifted from his shoulders.
"Unbelievable, Mr. Aldrich, thank the heavens! Just a moment ago, we found the perfect match for you."
Aldrich squinted his eyes, a faint smile tugging at his lips, and his demeanor relaxed. "Well, that's the good news I was hoping for."
Observing Aldrich's content expression, the dean couldn't help but let out a long sigh, clutching onto the hope of preserving the hospital's investments.
Three hours later, Maggie woke up, filled with vitality. Alisa held Maggie's hand and said, "Everything went perfectly. In ten days, you can return for a pregnancy test, an essential step to determine the success of artificial insemination."
Outside the operating room, the dean's assistant saw Maggie and his eyes instantly lit up as he grasped the situation.
However, Maggie's mood was heavy. She had spent all her remaining savings on in vitro fertilization, carrying the weight of her ex-boyfriend's pending credit card debt for luxury purchases.
Maggie left the hospital, strolling along the bustling city streets when panic suddenly washed over her. Lowering her head, she discovered her wallet was missing, swiped by an agile and elusive pickpocket who had vanished into the crowd.
Fear and despair surged through Maggie's veins as she instinctively chased the thief. Her heart pounded in her chest.
"Stop! Thief!" she shouted loudly, determination lacing her voice. Her wallet contained all the cash she had on her. Losing it meant she couldn't even afford a day's worth of transportation and food.
Onlookers turned their heads, curious about the commotion, but the thief had taken several steps and disappeared into the maze-like alleyways.
Maggie pursued the fleeting figure, evading obstacles and pushing herself to the limit. Her breathing grew rapid.
"Watch out!" a concerned bystander called, but she paid no heed.
The only thing that mattered was catching the thief and reclaiming her belongings. Maggie turned the street corner and caught a glimpse of the thief vanishing into a narrow alley up ahead.
She quickened her pace.
"Give it back to me!" Maggie's voice quivered, laced with anger and desperation.
The thief chuckled, his eyes reflecting arrogance. "You'll have to catch me first!" he taunted and sprinted off again, his laughter echoing through the narrow alley.
Suddenly, Maggie's foot hit an uneven cobblestone, almost causing her to stumble. As she struggled to regain her balance, her heart sank.
At that crucial moment, a man seemed to appear out of thin air. His strong arms swiftly enveloped her, preventing her from falling. His touch sent shivers down her spine.
With his striking features and pure charisma, her heart raced. It was the same man who had saved her earlier today.
"Are you okay?" Aldrich's deep voice oozed concern, interrupting her thoughts.
Looking into his captivating and handsome face, Maggie nodded involuntarily. "Who are you? How did you end up here?"
Curiosity and gratitude filled Maggie's heart.
Just who was this man who had come to her rescue?
