CHAPTER 6

ROXANNE

In the state of panic and animalistic sounds that filled the vicinity, I wondered what a hapless woman — like me—with a weak wolf could do in the middle of all of these catastrophes.

Sounds of growls and snarls filled the air and all of a sudden everything stood still for a minute. I stood there dazed, unable to turn my gaze away from the man who was standing right there before me…Looking all fierce, handsome, and what else?

“You?" His gaze was transfixed right on mine and I fluttered my eyes confused. I had gotten that look a thousand times, but no one had looked upon me with so much intensity as he did at that moment.

" This is not possible,” He muttered.

A lot of questions crossed my mind and I found it more difficult to answer any, the most prominent of the questions was centered upon why he had looked at me that way.

Does it have anything to do with who I was, or the color of my hair?

The question like a million others at the back of my mind was left unanswered when he left where I was to continue in the battle.

I sighed in relief, yet that little bit of comfort was cut short when a head came rolling toward where I was … I shrieked like the weakling that I was running in the other direction and bumping into one of the men in my pack who gave me an irritating look.

“Get out of here, you weakling!"

“We have to draw them in Alpha, more of our men are going down." A man, probably his beta, called in from a distance.

“Retreat the werewolves at the flank!" He ordered with an outstretched fist.

He went on a killing spew taking out as much as he could, he was staking them with his huge claws easily as It was all bloody— the heavy scent of blood and sweat intermixed with the feeling of fear deep in my veins.

Irritated at the whole scene, I turned and threw up…

I was exhausted emotionally and worn out physically. I needed anything that would

tune- me up and, truth be told, It wasn't forthcoming.

Whatever he had ordered seemed to be working just as well as more and more of our men were being lured into a trap, once again the battle line was getting thinner and I could see Ryker for the second time.

It was as though he was keeping an eye on me, more like a hawk gawking at a chick—Still, it didn't matter much to me at the moment as it was obvious Ryker was hell-bent on wiping all of us off and it was too bad my brother was too proud to see this.

With the thought of Zane heavy in my mind, I look around for any sign of him.

I could catch a glimpse of my brother almost at the end of the other flanks helping one of the hapless men that was mauled.

He motioned to the battleground and more men appeared to troop out unaware of the doom that awaited them while approaching Ryker's death nest.

Without thinking too much about the entire situation, I decided to turn around and head back to where he was.

After a few moments of having to see more blood and headless men amidst the sounds of nothing but anguish that filled the evening sky, I eventually found my way back to where he was.

“We need to retreat, we are losing this battle," I muttered to Zane who was sitting down with the rest of the wounded men as he was marking himself.

For a minute, I wondered who was the weak one, Zane who was shying away from this battle, or myself who was standing right in the middle of a few fallen men who were all scared of their pants.

The last time I had been this close to standing with him hadn't turned out well and it was obvious that I wouldn't be greeted with open arms this time as well.

It wasn't surprising when he glared at me. “What are you doing here!"He snarled. " And who gave you that idea that your opinion matters after all.”

I sighed, deep down I was hoping to myself that he wouldn't be very stupid to let more of the men die in his attempt to soothe his ego.

He knew better than anyone that what I was saying was the truth. It was as simple as the night was dark.

“We are doing exactly what he thought we would do, it is more as if we are playing his game.”

The man that was beside him looked up from where he was. “She is right Alpha, I noticed that as well."

I was expecting that he'd give that look of conviction but he didn't, it looked like he was angrier at the fact that I was right.

“Leave here immediately you weakling!” He raises his voice.

" But… "

“If I have to tell you to leave, you'd regret it … Get out of here!” He snarled at me with a bitter look on his face.

Not wanting to provoke him, I took a step back. I turned and made my way away from where he was still worried.

It was a risk but I knew deep down in my soul I had to do this, I was risking Zane's wrath but at that minute, it was worth it—

It was left to me to run this on my energy. I seemed to have very little say

about what was happening but It was time to stop resisting it. I needed to stand up for myself this once and follow through on my

calling.

“Back away from the flanks, order from Alpha!!.” I cried out and gave a weak shriek.

Ryker started toward where I was and immediately I could see that unsatisfying look that masked his face with each step he took.

He seemed irritated that he was figured out and almost immediately I could sense he was charging for where I was.

On the other hand, Zane who had probably heard me call the order walked out of the makeshift healing bay, he was limping but had this glare in his eyes as though he would rip me apart.

“Who gave you the audacity to call orders!" He looked around at the men who were falling back.

“You fool!!! Who made you a commander over my men?" He had his hands firmly around my neck trying all he could to choke me to my death.

“I’m_ I… sorry." I breathed out in pain and looked fearfully into his glowing eyes and could feel myself melting from the intensity.

His claws seemed to pierce deep into my skin making it bleed, he shoved me to the ground and stared at me with animosity.

" You'd be sorry when I am done with you!” he growled heavily.

He was quick to see Ryker who was aiming at him from behind my shoulders.

“Get out of my way.” He shoves me away.

A piercing scream filled the air as I fell through the ravine, hitting something hard as everything went blank.

My eyes fluttered after what felt like an eternity and I could feel a heavy arm lifting me off the ground.

“You…" I muttered weakly as my eyelids closed again.

Perhaps… This was Death!
