Chapter 24 Who Is the Unlucky One?
Stacy was utterly shocked.
Who exactly was this Lyra?
Just as she thought Lyra was done for, she ended up with a big slap in the face...
She actually knew Mr. Carver. But Stacy had looked through her resume. How could an orphan from a welfare home possibly know Mr. Carver?
Stacy felt that things might not be so simple, so she discreetly stepped back and made a phone call.
Meanwhile, when everyone looked at Lyra, their gazes turned into admiration.
The main lead, Cody, was completely oblivious to the attention.
He squatted beside Lyra and massaged her legs. When he looked at her, he had a mischievous twinkle in his eyes and a smile so endearing.
"Long time no see, Lyra. You're getting more beautiful each day. A beautiful woman like you shouldn't get angry with a little brat like me. It'll make you ugly!"
Lyra playfully poked his forehead with her slender fingertip and leaned close to his ear, threatening him in a low voice, "Cut it out. Behave yourself on set from now on. If you pull any more tricks, I'll tell Old Carver about what you have done."
"No, please! He'll definitely punish me severely!"
Cody felt a pang of pain throughout his body. He quickly begged for forgiveness from Lyra with a pitiful look. "Lyra, trust me, I'll listen to you the most."
Lyra smiled. "Now, go apologize to the cleaner."
"Huh?"
Cody's face changed. "I am Carver, you want me to bow to the cleaner? How will other people look at me, Lyra..."
Lyra stifled her smile and turned serious.
"In this day and age, why do we still differentiate between high and low? You threw a tantrum and smashed things, but the poor cleaning lady didn't do anything wrong. She had to clean up your mess, and on top of that, you scolded her when she tried to advise you. Shouldn't you take responsibility?"
Cody was completely dumbfounded.
When he turned his head, he saw the cleaning lady tidying up the mess he had made earlier. He felt a bit guilty and reluctantly walked up to her, apologizing sincerely and giving her some compensation.
The cleaning lady was very moved and nice to him.
Lyra also arranged for his agent to compensate the crew for the damaged props.
With her presence on set for the entire afternoon, Cody was exceptionally serious and cooperative during filming. He usually nailed each scene in one or two takes, making the director ecstatic and overflowing with gratitude towards Lyra.
She pursed her lips. "He's just young and mischievous. Beating him up is enough."
The director laughed repeatedly and held Lyra in even higher regard.
When it was time to wrap up, Cody held Lyra's hand and acted coquettishly, expressing his apology for what happened earlier and wanting to treat her to dinner.
Lyra couldn't resist him and agreed.
To avoid running into fans, they quietly went out for dinner. Cody was almost unrecognizable, as he was fully disguised. If one didn't look closely, they wouldn't recognize him.
The two of them arrived at the Doug Hotel, the most prestigious seven-star restaurant in Frayton.
As soon as they entered the restaurant, Lyra was captivated by the dark-toned decor. She didn't like brightly lit dining places and preferred a slightly dimmer ambiance, which enhanced the enjoyment of food.
Shortly after ordering, Cody kept gesturing to her and whispered, "Lyra, do you know that man at the next table? He's been glancing at us several times."
Lyra turned her head to look and found Melvin having dinner with Charlotte at the adjacent table.
Charlotte also noticed her and her gaze was filled with pride and provocation, portraying a victorious attitude.
She casually withdrew her gaze, "That's the CEO of the Freeman group."
Cody nodded knowingly, "The woman next to him is probably his fiancée, who will be publicly announced and engaged next month."
Lyra paused for a moment, but her expression remained unchanged as she focused on her food.
However, Cody's curiosity was ignited, "I heard he had a secret marriage that lasted three years before ending in divorce. I wonder who the unlucky one was."
Lyra glanced at him.
"It's me."
Cody didn't initially understand her meaning and looked puzzled. It wasn't until later that he realized what she meant and was shocked, slapping the table in disbelief.
"What! You're his ex-wife?!"
His voice was extremely loud, attracting the attention of nearby tables.
Melvin at the neighboring table furrowed his brows, his face darkening.
Lyra glared displeasingly, and Cody wisely covered his mouth, only able to mutter in a low voice, "Good thing you left! He's just a handsome playboy. Clearly, he doesn't deserve someone like you, Lyra!"
She chuckled, "So, I'm the unlucky one?"
Cody's face changed, and he quickly shook his head, his expression sincere, "No, no, he's the unlucky one. Losing someone as amazing as you is his loss."
"But..." He paused for a moment, chuckled awkwardly, "Now that you are single again, maybe you should consider me? Someone younger can also be quite likable, you know."
Lyra was caught off guard by his words and nearly choked on her juice, accidentally spilling it on her white pencil skirt.
"Lyra, are you okay?"
"I'm fine. I'll go to the restroom to clean up. I'll be back soon."
With that, she got up and headed towards the restroom.
Melvin at the adjacent table heard their conversation loud and clear.
They had just divorced a few days ago, and she had already found another man?!
What exactly did she think she was doing?
The more Melvin thought about it, the angrier he became. But since they were already divorced, it seemed like her choice of romantic partner was no longer his concern, and he had no right to question it.
However, he couldn't help but feel upset, a knot forming in his heart.
Charlotte noticed his change in expression and asked softly, "Melvin, what's wrong?"
"It's nothing, just thinking about work."
Charlotte sighed in relief and pouted, "Since I went abroad, we haven't had a proper dinner together in a long time. Can you put aside your work for tonight and just accompany me?"
Melvin's expression was somewhat evasive, his deep black eyes lost in thought, contemplating something.
He didn't respond to Charlotte's words, elegantly stood up, and casually adjusted his collar.
"You go ahead and eat. I have something to take care of, but I'll be back soon."
"Melvin!"
...
In the restroom, Lyra cleaned the juice stains from her skirt and touched up her lipstick.
As she looked at herself in the mirror, she momentarily lost herself in thought.
During her three years as part of the Freeman family, she went about her days with a plain face, doing household chores and never taking the time to dress up. Her skin had become dull, almost like that of an old woman.
But now, she was ready to focus on her career and become the proud princess of the Lloyd family once again!
As for men, they would only slow her down in her personal growth in career and life.
Lost in her thoughts, she was suddenly interrupted by the entrance of a tall figure.
Lyra didn't even bother to glance at him and continued washing her hands.
Then, she heard the sound of the restroom door being locked.
She raised an eyebrow suspiciously, and the familiar handsome face of the man entered her line of sight.
Melvin approached her with an expressionless face, emanating a chilling aura that filled the air with pressure.
Lyra looked at him in shock, his face repeatedly making her question if it was an illusion, "I never expected Mr. Freeman, the most powerful figure in Frayton's business world, to enter the women's restroom and lock the door. Are you a pervert or something?"
