You are either quite ambitious or quite mad
♥Elena's POV♥
They say that any technology sufficiently advanced looks like magic. But the truth is that there is always a clue to magic.
Magic can manifest itself as either science or technology so the gullible humans can celebrate creating a successful theory that is backed up with experiments. Magic can be used for the betterment of mankind and supernaturals. It is the thin thread that binds everything together to make sense. It promotes our evolution or brings devastation upon us all.
Those who practice dark art use it for power and control, for abuse, and for the pleasure they feel in causing pain and death. Just like the tragic story of Diego, Harry, and Mary. Mary was eventually served as food to the vampires and they ensured to drain her vile blood till she became a walking corpse and ended up as bones.
Harry on the other hand was made to combat in a duel for his life. He fought with all his might but the vampire warrior was too strong so he died a painful death. But one thing I can't help but wonder is what debt Mary owed that led to her demise and what exactly did she trade to pay her dues? But the matter seems insignificant to the others because no one mentioned it.
Today is the day I learn the ethics of magic and how to control my power but Suzy is nowhere to be found.
"Looking for Suzy?" Hilda leaned on the pillar of the quarter and tossed the body of a human she just finished draining to the floor.
"Yeah, I can't seem to find her anywhere, do you happen to know where she is?" I cocked a brow and folded my arm to my chest.
Hilda took baby steps and her black leather boot clicked and echoed through empty walls till she was beside me. "If there is one thing I can bet my money on, she is probably screwing some hoe." She tapped my back and walked away.
"Wait, can you help me find her?" I hollered after her and she stopped without turning to face me.
"If you want me to kill an enemy or train your fighting skills, then I'm your girl, but any other silly task isn't for me." She turned to give a plastered fake smile and went on her merry way.
"How can someone be so useless and useful simultaneously." I hissed back at her and resumed hollering Suzy's name around the quarter.
I rummaged through every part of the quarter but I couldn't find her so I decided to tap into my magic. I have seen Suzy perform locator spells to find a missing person before, so I bought out a map and her hairbrush and began chanting. The brush was shoved multiple times by the spell and it eventually landed at the riverside near the bayou.
What could Suzy be doing at the bayou meant for the werewolves? I hurriedly returned the brush and head out of the quarter. Vampires aren't allowed in the bayou so she must be somewhere close to the bayou. But next to the riverside is a highly-profiled bar, Susan must be shagging some guy there.
I packed my jet-black curly hair in a messy bun and began to sniff the air to track Suzy's scent. I walked through the pathway that led to the local bar. The cold air was nipping on my exposed skin. It is the night of a full moon and you can mildly hear the howls of wolves through the night sky.
I reached the bar in no time, even from outside of the door you can hear the loud and excessive voices and shouts of the people from within. I swung the door open and covered my nose the moment the stench hit me. The establishment reeked of human sweat and scent. Each man held a twin prostitute on their legs and the hoes shoved their open bosom to the face of the drunk men. They all looked pretty wasted. This is the perfect environment to find her.
Susan would never stay so close to the humans so she must be somewhere less crowded, I ordered a chilled beer and sat at a corner till I spotted the slutty blonde.
Seduction was what Suzy knew best and did right. She moved into a guy's personal space but he didn't look like he minded. They held their gazes with the right look of heat present in their eyes. Suzy didn't just look at the man, she looked into him as if she knew his desires. They eventually started making out; and with the kiss came a rough touch of her body poised, just the right blend of relaxation and tension. Their lips locked for some moment before she started planting wet kisses all over his cheeks and neck and her hands wandered dangerously down.
I drained my cup of its beer and slammed it on the table before heading to hijack Susan by the elbow.
"Uhm! Sorry, you had to witness that," the wolf guy Suzy was eyeing some days back at the court said awkwardly and scratched his neck.
Suzy rolled her eyes and grunted. "Aren't you supposed to be reading for school now? Why did you have to interrupt my fun."
"I ditched study session so I could learn magic and I need you to bring your ass along with me and come tutor me." I gave an apologetic smile to the wolf guy and dragged Suzy back to the quarter.
"You selfish witch. I was lending my ass to the wolf guy and you could have asked him for permission to share."
"Eew! I don't want your ass, I need you to train my power, hoe!" I crinkled my nose at her.
"Call me that one more time and I will pin you to the wall and strike you with a plague." She said with a tight-lipped smile.
"Too bad it will be a wasted effort because the last time I checked." I crossed my arms over my chest.
"I can't die. Perks of being a hybrid." I winked at her.
"Cool! So where should we start from?" She placed her hands on her hips and sighed.
"How about you tell me how magic works? And I tried the locator spell to find you." I wiggled my brows at a mortified Suzy.
"You did what?" She gasped and placed her hand on her chest in horror.
"Don't blame me, no one was willing to assist me with the search so I tried magic." I shrugged my shoulders.
"I'm impressed. It is either you are quite ambitious or quite mad." She tapped her chin thoughtfully.
"Thanks," I smirked at her. "But I vouch for the former."
"Magic is linked to emotions; the stronger the emotion the potent the magic." Suzy pulled off her leather jacket to reveal a pink-colored crop top that dropped so low that her full boobs were on display except for her nipples.
"Okay!" I said and eyed her warily. Her cheerful self was gone and replaced with the seriousness of a witch.
"All you need to do is to channel your emotions to your prey or object." Suzy rolled her hands in the hair and a whirlwind started. The windows of the quarter began slamming themselves. One smashed the wall hard and the shred fell to the floor.
I stared at her with wide eyes as I tried to absorb what the hell just happened. "Did you cause that whirlwind?"
"I concentrated my emotions and controlled the molecules present in the air. It is quite simple, try it."
I closed my eyes and tried to concentrate but nothing was coming through. I rolled my hands in the air, grunted, punched the air, yet it was still the same emptiness and voidness. It is either my magic isn't collaborating or I have been ridden off my emotions.
I kicked the wall and my toe hit a broken fraction of the glass. I started bleeding but the blood stopped as soon as it started and my cut was sealed back like it was never there.
"Are you alright?" Suzy touched my shoulders and said with a voice laced with concern.
"I'm far from that, I just failed my first attempt at a magic lesson." I squeezed my eyes shut and punched the wall till I could feel a crack and then I felt better.
"It's okay to not get magic right at first, but I can guarantee you that will be a master witch as long as you keep practicing." Suzy twirled me around and said subtly.
"But how can we continue when I didn't get the first lesson right?" My brows furrowed.
"We can continue by learning the scope of magic and some history." She stood tall and cracked her knuckles.
She led us towards the fifth storey building pavement and we hopped on it to watch the full moon at its brightest glory. The warm milky glow of the moon graced the sky as if she had some bright idea, something brilliant that needed to shine upon the earth.
"There are five major branches of magic that witches must be familiarized with." Suzy's eyes riveted from the moon to face my porcelain glass skin that the moonlight centered on.
"Ancestral magic, representational magic, necromancy, hoodoo, and voodoo." Her tone came out softly and there was a unique light in her eyes like she missed being a full witch.
"That is a lot. It is so good hearing you talk about magic than pussies and dick." I chuckled and she ruffled my long hair.
"Ancestral magic is an extremely powerful form of witchcraft that draws on the power of consecrated or sacred witches. But it is limited to the area where the witch's ancestors are buried."
"Does the witches of LA practice ancestral magic?" My gaze at the moon broke as I blinked repeatedly.
"Yes, that's the reason why no matter how many times they are stopped from using magic, they can't leave LA else their magic fades." She pinched her index finger and thumb together to make her point.
"No wonder Basitana can't help but hate dad. The witches are totally helpless." I pouted and recalled the glare she kept sparing dad in the courtroom.
"But why does dad forbids them from using magic?" I stretched my legs forward to the air and backward to feel the rough patches of the pavement while the chill wind ruffled our hair.
"Once upon a time, in year 1208. There was a french warlock, a voodoo wizard that moved from France to LA and became the leader of the coven of witches. He claimed to be a necromancer that could raise the dead and enforce his own brand of law. Sailors would go buy wind from him to ensure a safe journey and the citizens of the city sought him to solve their legal issues rather than going to the authorities. The humans and vampire factions weren't happy with the development because it made them the minorities while the witches ruled the quarter."
I shivered from the cold and rubbed my hands to feel warm. "Damn! That must have been a terrible time for the other factions. I can't believe the witches once ruled."
"Lucindo D'Abovillle the great eventually died in the hands of the ruthless dark lord. Alaric Marshall I."
"Wait a minute!" I raised my hands to stop her. "Isn't that grandfather?"
"Yes, He was not the best of angels but more of a devil and he had lots of enemies. Alaric choked the life out of him and threw him on the floor to rot and wither into nothing in the year 1273."
"He lived for sixty-five years?"
"That is absolutely correct and that happened in the 13th century. After his downfall, the witches were banned from using magic for the first time in history."
"Wait a minute! Something doesn't add up. The witches didn't use magic for a very long time?"
"No, so many wars have happened child, sometimes the witches regained power and freedom and ruled the quarter and sometimes the wolves. We have a whole library filled with our history." Suzy patted my back and jumped from the fifth storey building.
I followed her swiftly and landed on my feet and hands.
"You are a quarter witch and have so much power inside of you. All you need to do is tap into that energy." Suzy said before slipping a lollipop in her mouth. I guess slutty Suzy is back.
"Right!" I sighed and nodded my head at her motivation. I closed my eyes and tried to decipher what emotion I felt. It was that of despair and how I needed to prove myself.
I shut my eyes tight and balled my fists hard till I couldn't feel them. I could feel my energy turning into electricity inside of me. I felt like I could feel little sparks so I channeled the sparks to my mind and it felt like a whole voltage shot through me. The loud bang of the gate with Suzy's cry made me open my eyes.
"I told you to blast the air and not knock me out of existence." Suzy yelped and struggled to stand up while I cackled.
"I can't believe it, I did it." I jumped and twirled around, feeling good and proud of myself.
"Oh!" Suzy scratched her neck and furrowed her brows. "That's true, you did it."
"Come here and help me shut this gate." Suzy beckoned on me. I walked towards the gate to close it properly when something caught my eyes.
I pushed the gate open wide as curiosity seeped into me.
"What is that?" Suzy hollered from the compound.
"Come take a look." I waved my hands at her and tried to grasp the situation.
Three vampires laid dead right outside the quarter. There is a Crescent sign on their forehead with dried patched blood in it. The vampires were placed in a circle drawn with chalk on the floor.
"How is this possible? Killing of vampires is a taboo." Suzy gasped and her legs wobbled.
"These vampires weren't even staked, they are just dead, how is that possible? And why leave the bodies here when they should be hidden from the dark lord?"
"Elena, the bodies were meant to be seen, this is a message."
