Letting the mouse out of the bag

♥Elena's POV♥

Challenges are what makes life interesting and overcoming them is what makes life meaningful.

All my seventeen years of existence on earth has been filled with trials and quest thrown my way irrespective of whether I'm prepared or not.

As the rightful and legitimate heir to the great Marshalls, the overall ruler of the vampire kingdom and leader over all supernatural realm in Los Angeles, I always remain a target to spite my family, split us apart, or die unjustly.

It is quite alarming that all my life, right from when I was an innocent foetus, people always try to kill me. The witches tried to use magic, The vampires attacked my pregnant mom, The alpha. The ancestors were also against me like I was some big mistake or an abomination that doesn't deserve to roam this earth. Even just bearing the surname 'Marshall' means inheriting my Father's enemies and as a result of that, My father entrusted his best and loyal soldier, Hilda to watch over me right from birth, train me once I was of age, and die for me when the need arises.

As a hybrid with special powers, I learned I'm supposed to unlock my werewolf strength once I clock eighteen on a full moon. So I only have vampire strength and my magically untrained power to protect myself.

The dead brown decomposing leaves rose in swirls and fell to the soil weightlessly like that of a feather. I guess the cold misty weather did that to the forest. As I venture into the thick, abundant forest, I can feel my heart pounding ferociously at what I'm about to do-- but I can't afford to back down now because I have summoned up the courage to inform Hilda about my truest desire.

The forest is eerie quiet but I know this is the only place to find her because her life revolves around the quarter and this forest and if she isn't home then she must be out here feeding on an unfortunate prey or training to sharpen her skills.

As my footsteps approach, crunching the twig and fallen leaves, my instinct tells me someone is watching quietly as I picked up a scent. It definitely is a vampire.

I crouched, bending my legs and ankle behind a tree to steady my balance while I scanned the forest. The scent I picked earlier is gone, meaning the vampire masked the scent, a smart move but I'd be damned if I let the vampire kill me.

While waiting for the creature to strike, I bought out my black daggers pinned around my waist and held them delicately. My heart plummets to the ground at the same time when a silver arrow penetrates the air faster than the wind can travel. I dodged the dagger and it stabbed the tree.

"Come out right here bloody coward, let me feed you to the vultures." An authoritative voice that I will always recognize anywhere called and finally stepped out from the woods.

"As much as I would love to obey you, that will mean wishing yourself a painful death because father won't take it lightly with you." I folded my arms to my chest and smirked.

I was right earlier on, It was a female vampire. There was a deep richness to her black skin; a typical example of an ebony beauty. She has on leather spandex that hugged her wide hips graciously and gave her that dangerous, edgy look. Her hair was cut short and it curled like that of a new born' hair. Her brown iris gave out the mild anger she felt from inside. Warm, yet dangerous. A large tattoo covered her entire arm and back and a nose ring sat comfortably on her nose.

Her heels echoed around the forest as she stepped forward to interrogate me. Her black camisole complimented her outfit. It has a 'V' neck design that hung dangerously low and left her full cleavage on display.

"What are you doing here?" Hilda's strong baritone snapped at me.

"I'm here to learn." I smiled sheepishly.

"Very well, you should be in school and not in a dangerous forest." She scoffed and hijacked me by the elbow, leading me back home.

My head jerked up at her response, I didn't come all the way here just to be shunned. I think it is time to finally spill the beans.

"Hilda stop!" I pulled my arm and halted our movement.

"Elena here isn't a good place for you, you have to leave now." She furrowed her brows and smashed her boot on a crawling Snakehead.

"Woah! I didn't see that coming." My voice came out trembling. The cold atmosphere did nothing to calm my racing heart.

She cocked a brow up and stared at me in amusement. "Where is Susan?"

A musical whistle came from behind us and muttered, "right here."

We turned simultaneously in a fighting stance. Susan leaned her back against the bark of an old tree, wood covering with growing lush green moss and bugs with the size of tiny pebbles crawled up to where they drilled a hole for their nest.

"Did Susan come with you?" Hilda's gaze shifted between Susan and me.

"Nope, I simply teleported. Perks of being a witch." Susan winked and walked towards us while I smiled in response.

Susan is my second guardian, a witch. I inherited her from father as a birthday gift at the age of thirteen. She helps with monitoring and controlling my powers because they can get too overwhelming sometimes. She swore allegiance to father when he saved her from the cold, grip hands of death. Father sired her by giving her some of his venoms and she became a half-witch and a half-vampire.

Susan is the total opposite of Hilda. She is cheery, nice, friendly and a whole package of sunshine and rainbows. But the only Achilles heels Susan has is sleeping with everything that has a tail in between their legs. Susan is the definition of a whore or slut in a good way.

"Hey sugar plum, have you finally let the mouse out of the bag?" Susan seductively licked her lollipop and nudged her head towards Hilda.

I scrunched my face in confusion and whispered into Susan's ears, "don't you mean letting the cat out of the bag?"

Susan scoffed and twirled her blonde hair around her slender porcelain finger. "Whatever! Be it cat or mouse, we still need to get the godamn animal out of the bag."

"Are you guys going to talk or not because I'm still here watching this tomfoolery." Hilda hissed.

I let out an exasperated sigh and faced Hilda. "I think it is high time you taught me how to train and protect myself."

Hilda's face went from furious and stiff to smile and mockery as she barked out a menacing laugh. "You are joking!"

"Hilda you need to cut her some slack, she isn't a baby anymore, we need to help her grow." Susan's face was becoming too white and pale from the cold.

Hilda gasped, feigning shock and stared at Susan with wide eyes. "Oh really?"

"I'm stating what is obvious and we both know that." Susan gave Hilda a staredown.

"We are good enough to protect her she needs no training. She should go read some physics book and train her mind instead." Hilda slammed her fist on the branch of a tree, leaving the tree to pull from the roots and collapse.

My heart sank immediately, what was I expecting? Hilda can be very stubborn and hardly bulges to a person's opinion.

The both of them began to raise their voices and attack themselves.

"Enough!" I declared and a chilly wind slammed the both of them to a rock, and the forest became quiet again. It was my magical powers, it was surfacing. My Iris went from black to blue and black again.

"I can't keep going to school and hiding behind my parents to practice magic." Tears welled in my eyes as I walked towards them.

"I will be eighteen in the next three months, my werewolf side will be activated and then what next? I need to prepare myself, Hilda."

Susan nodded in acknowledgement and muttered, "Her powers will be too much to handle then and it can kill her if she doesn't start learning how to control them."

"What?" Hilda and I gasped, shock was written all over us as we waited for some sort of clarity.

"That was what the ancestors said to me. She is a mature adult and should be treated as such." Susan stood up and dusted her short leather skirt that exposed her fine pair of legs.

"When it comes to physical combat and vampire tutoring, you are the best shot Elena has got." Susan held Hilda's hands and squeezed them.

"I can teach her how to use magic and hook her with some hot dudes so she can lose her virginity. I bet it feels like baggage." Susan looked at me pitifully and shrugged.

"You will do no such thing." Hilda threw a dagger at Susan and Susan melted the dagger by chanting some spells.

Hilda hopped on a rock and cracked her knuckles. "Even though I do not fully support this."

She jumped on an old tree and broke two strong branches. "I knew it was going to come to this one day but I have always procrastinated it."

She landed on another rock and began sharpening the branches till it was smooth as a stake. "You want to be on my level?" Her voice was laced with humour.

"Yes, thank you!" I said excitedly and threw a kiss at Susan who slapped my butt in response.

"Climb bitch." She winked at me and threw a stake towards me.

All my fears and anxieties instantly left me the moment the stake touched my hands. I held it like a prized trophy, savouring the smoothness and sharpness. I felt the need to say something appreciative.

"Such a new fragrance you are wearing. It's lovely."

She rolled her eyes and said, "It is mosquito repellant, you filthy liar."

"Oh! I love how this is going, I should get some popcorn." Susan clapped excitedly and giggled.

We stood six feet apart, eyes locked, waiting for who to engage first.

Hilda smirked at me with that dangerous eyes and began to circle me. "Someone out there is holding their breath and waiting for you to fail."

"Make sure they suffocate, sugar plum." Susan hollered at me and giggled.

I charged forward with my stake and Hilda's stake met with mine. She was so strong that I began to breathe faster.

"What's wrong? Having a second thought?" She asked with brows cocked and a cocky smile graced her lip.

With anger, I struck at different angles and her rod kept meeting mine. I knew she was good and probably taking it easy with me. I definitely needed other tactics.

She lunged with full vigour, screaming into the forest while I dodged and fell from the rock. She jumped from the rock with her rod heading towards the direction of my heart. I rolled to the left and her rod got buried into the soil.

"Hmm! I guess I will have to go with my fists then." She gave a devious smile and punched my face. It was painful as hell and I could feel my bones retracting and rearranging.

I combated with my fist for a while before tearing her cheek with my stake.

"Cat got your tongue? No more bluffing?" I chuckled and watched her wipe her blood from her cheek while I picked up my stake.

Her wound began to heal with her skin stretching over till it was normal again.  She flashed a cheeky smile and muttered. "Arrogance is the camouflage of insecurity."

"I bet you know that because that is your method." I stood up and dusted my pants.

Her smile went still and a deep frown took over. She lunged, missing my hand but caught the sleeve of my jacket, ripping it and grabbed me by my neck.

"Oh! Did I hit a nerve?" My voice was laced with pity and sarcasm.

"I got you now, so surrender." She hollered with wide eyes and panting breaths.

"Over my dead body." I glared and finally snickered.

"Oh! That's right. It is already dead." I smashed her face with my head and she released me to the ground while groaning.

Her eyes went from black to red, meaning danger. She gripped my legs and dragged me to the mud. "Lesson one; know when to give up when you are clearly beaten. A warrior that runs today lives to fight tomorrow."

She extended her hands to me and helped me get up. "Lesson two, your enemy won't let you know when they are about to strike. You must make your moves unpredictable." She walked away without looking back.

***

The quarter is like an ancient castle built with the finest yet oldest bricks and pebbles from thousands of years ago before human existence.

Its windows were as shy eyes, large to welcome any ray of sun. The rock walls belonged right where it was as if perchance it had grown up right from that hallowed ground. It was as if it had been called into existence to protect those who came to dwell within, to quell the elements and allow heat to build from hearths into the inhaled woodland air. It was built perfectly for vampires. The walls had little or no cracks despite how many battles and wars have been fought in it. It holds memories that reek of ancient history, secrets, love, betrayal, death, happiness and sin. It is a lair perfect enough for the supernaturals.

At every sharp corner of the quarter, we have vampire guards stationed everywhere to protect the household, but my favourite bodyguard is Daniel since he monitors my chamber and he has always been diligent and loyal since the beginning of time.

"Hey Dan, your muscles seem to be bulging so hard." Suzy drew little circles on his bare arms, her little way of seducing him.

"Thanks, Suzy, it is just muscles. Don't you have something else to do?" Dan stared at everywhere but Suzy. He has always had this huge crush on her.

Suzy rolled her eyes and scoffed. "Of course I know it is just muscles but my major concern is if you are okay down there." She eyed his pants.

Dan coughed out in embarrassment and muttered. "I think you should leave Susan."

Susan raised her brows and grinned. "I love the way my name rolls of your tongue. Perhaps we could put it to better use." She bit her lip seductively.

"As nice as that sounds, I refuse to be a case of sexual manipulation." Dan snapped, his white face was becoming pink either as a result of anger or embarrassment.

Suzy let out an awkward laugh and shrugged. "Look, I know we don't know each other that well, but I'm still worried about you. No one deserves to be alone for years."

"I'm not complaining, am I?" Dan groaned.

"No one deserves to be alone, especially not a hot dude like yourself," Suzy whispered in his ears, licked it, and walked away.

"Now what was that all about?" I exhaled heavily, staring at an indifferent Suzy.

"I just wanted him to loosen up a bit. He is always too prim and proper and has been like that since forever."  She shrugged and led the way to my chamber.

"Where is Hilda by the way?" I waved to the bowing guards.

"In the council meeting. The Norths came over."

The council of vampires consists of the eldest and well-experienced vampires. The vampires are divided into two political parties. The Marshall handles the southern part and the Norths handle the northern part but we are still the sovereign and overall ruler.

The council of vampires come to amend the constitution, create laws, and do all sort of governmental job to make the quarter a better place for all supernaturals.

"OMG! Who is that hot dude?" Suzy whistled and nudged her head towards the direction of my room door. He leaned his back on my door and has probably been waiting for a very long time.

"Cassius Aleister North. As the name implies, he is the heir to the Northern vampires, nothing spectacular." I rolled my eyes.

"Isn't he cute?" Suzy gushed and finger-combed her hair, in a bid to look attractive at the dying minute because we were almost near him.

"Who?"

"Cass, of course." She glared at me.

"I'm worried about you," I whispered in her ears and walked towards Cass.

"What are you doing here? Got lost again?" I gave out a forceful smile.

He stared at me from down to up and gave a cheeky grin. "Gosh! You look incredibly hot. I bet you will look even better without your clothes on."

"What the hell!" I gave him a disgusted look.

Susan cackled loudly. "See, I like him already."

"Hmm! Someone who finally sees me for who I am. I like you too Suzy." He wiggled his brow at a blushing Susan.

"I should leave you love birds to catch up." Suzy blew Cass a kiss and walked away.

"We are not love birds for Pete sake." I stamped my feet and frowned.

"Too bad I don't believe you." Suzy hollered and slammed the door of my chamber.

"Whatever!" I rolled my eyes at Suzy and faced Cass. "Why are you here?"

He let out an exasperated sigh and licked his plump, red lips. "Well, the meeting got boring so I came to look for the hottest girl."

"Good, you should leave now." I opened the door to my room and stepped in.

"Why? You got a problem with me?" He strolled to my side and peered at my face.

"Ever heard of social distancing? I think the humans are quite familiar with that, douche." I punched his chest and settled on a chair.

He tapped his fingers to his chin and stared at me with those grey eyes that remained sparks of the black smith's fire. His brown tousled hair reminded me of deep caramel, and his white olive skin gave the illusion of warm creamy milk. If there is one word to describe Cass, he is the definition of beauty. He is tall, poised, elegant, rich, an heir to a respectable family, and a total douche bag because of his ego and pride and the last thing I will do is to fuel his ego.

"Why are you staring? You know it is rude to do so, right?" I scolded.

He let out a low peal of laughter. "I'm just wondering why you are immune to my charms. That's strange."

"Well, I clearly got vaccinated you know." I grabbed a chill blood bag and began sipping lightly.

We were busy having small talks and bantering when Hilda barged in with a frightening terror.

"Why is he here?" She glared at me, her fists were balled so tightly that I feared she could crack her bones.

"He got bored and found his way here. " I shrugged at Hilda, why are you so mad.

"I was pissed before coming in but seeing his face fuels the anger." She pinched her index finger and her thumbs together.

"Oh my, you really can't handle my handsome face?"

"More like your face pisses me off." Hilda slammed her fists on the wall.

Cass gasped, feigning shock. "You have got such a temper."

Hilda licked her frozen lip and gave a forced smile. "Oh no Cass, I only have a quick reaction to bullshit."

I was getting adapted to Hilda and Cass' bantering when I heard something else. It sounded like howling, chanting, roaring, and all sort of supernatural noise, surrounding the quarter.

"What is that sound?" I gasped with terror.

"Just what I was about informing you before Mr Ass got in the way." Hilda hissed and brought out her daggers.

"It is Cass." He muttered.

"The castle is surrounded by witches, vampires, and werewolves. An execution is about to be made." Hilda hissed quietly and we all looked at one another with shock once it got registered in our brain what shitty thing was about to happen.
