Chapter 1
Mira
The wet slap of flesh against the white silk sheets ended with a sharp, casual cruelty.
“You are a complete waste of time.”
Zane’s voice was sheer ice as he pulled his cock out of me. Thick, warm drops spilled onto the bedding between my thighs, stinking of sex and betrayal. The words hit harder than any physical blow, cracking something vital behind my ribs. I stayed frozen on my hands and knees for a long, agonizing second, my chest heaving, before I slowly turned my head to look at him.
He didn’t even glance down at me. He just grabbed a towel from the nightstand and wiped his hips and hand with flat, methodical indifference. Like he was wiping off dirt.
“Two years,” he said, his tone casual, as if discussing bad weather. “Two entire years I’ve tolerated you in my bed. I actually convinced myself that if I fucked you hard enough, you’d finally bear me an heir. Turns out I’ve just been wasting my energy. You’re nothing but a barren, wolfless omega.”
A hot, stinging burn rushed to the back of my eyes, but I swallowed it down hard, biting the inside of my cheek until I tasted copper. I pushed myself up with agonizing slowness, sitting on the edge of the bed completely naked, my skin still flushed and marked from his earlier roughness.
“Zane…” My voice came out small, cracked, and fragile, betraying the raw, bleeding ache in my chest. “We had an agreement. The pack refused to accept me as Luna, but you promised we would prove them wrong together. Was any of it real?”
“Don’t say my name with that filthy mouth!” The roar that left his chest made me flinch violently, my shoulder hitting the headboard. I knew the guards standing outside the heavy mahogany doors could hear every word. “What was I ever expecting from a weak piece of trash like you? Your body is useless. Your womb is worthless. You can’t even carry an Alpha’s seed to full term.”
The pain tore through me—a sharp, twisting agony that threatened to break my resolve completely. A lone tear finally slipped past my defenses, tracking hot down my cheek. But I brushed it away with a trembling hand, forcing my spine straight. I refused to let him see me shatter entirely.
A sharp, deliberate knock sounded at the door.
Before either of us could answer, the lock clicked, and the double doors swung wide open.
Nella stepped into the room. Dark brown hair spilled loose over her shoulders, and her transparent, milky-white silk nightwear clung to every line of her body.
“Nella?” I said, my voice thick with a sudden, suffocating dread. “You can’t just barge in here. Even if he’s your cousin… we deserve privacy in our own bedroom.”
Nella didn’t even glance in my direction. She walked straight past me, her hips swaying with a confident rhythm, a small, triumphant smile twisting her lips.
“Hey, babe,” she purred, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. “I missed you. I got tired of waiting in the hall.”
Zane turned to her, his eyes lighting up with a dark, hungry fire—a look he had never once directed at me in two years. He reached out, grabbed her bare waist, and pulled her flush against his body, slamming his mouth down on hers with possessive intensity. Right there. In our quarters. In front of me.
“You told me she was your cousin,” I whispered, the words heavy and choking in my throat, the humiliation burning so hot it felt like acid in my veins. “Zane… why?”
He ripped his mouth away from Nella’s with a wet sound and turned those dead, ice-blue eyes toward me.
“You complete fool,” he scoffed. “I thought you were just barren and wolfless. I didn’t realize you were also hopelessly stupid.”
He walked past me, closed the heavy double doors, and turned the iron lock with a deliberate, heavy click that echoed straight through my ribcage.
“Now you’re going to stay right there,” he sneered, dropping his voice into a low tone. “Stay right there, keep your mouth shut, and watch how a real woman is taken.”
He grabbed Nella by the back of her hair and forced her down onto her knees on the rug. One hand fisted tightly in her dark locks, and with the other, he guided his thick, rigid cock straight into her open mouth.
He forced her head down, holding her pinned there while she gagged. Thick saliva spilled from the corners of her lips, dripping onto the dark wood floor. He fucked her throat hard and deep, his hips snapping forward in heavy, rhythmic lunges, making sure the wet, choking sounds filled every corner of the room.
I sat completely still on the edge of the bed. I didn't beg. I didn't scream. I didn't utter a single plea, though my fingernails dug so hard into my palms they drew blood.
A profound, hollow silence settled deep within my chest. Watching them didn't just break my heart—it cauterized the wound entirely. Every wet sound, every selfish grunt from Zane, and every dramatic gasp from Nella stripped away the lingering remnants of my love, piece by painful, agonizing piece. The illusion of the man I thought I loved withered into ash, leaving behind only the stark, ugly reality of what he truly was.
When he pulled out of her mouth, long strings of saliva stretched between Nella’s parted lips and his shaft. He yanked her up by her hair, spun her around, and bent her roughly over the small oak writing desk near the window.
Important papers scattered across the floor. The heavy reading lamp crashed down and shattered into glass fragments. Zane shoved her thin nightwear up over her hips, spread her open, and drove his entire length into her in one brutal thrust.
Nella’s sharp scream tore through the room, quickly dissolving into loud, needy moans. He slammed into her over and over, the wet slap of skin hitting skin echoing off the high walls.
I watched it all, my vision blurring slightly with suppressed tears that I refused to let fall. The betrayal sat inside my belly like a heavy block of ice, freezing the pain before it could consume me.
“Fuck—Zane—” Nella cried out, her fingers clawing at the wooden edge of the desk. “Harder… please… cum inside me! Fill me up! I’ll give you a real Alpha heir… I’ll give you everything that broken omega couldn't!”
Zane growled low in the back of his throat, driving into her with a final surge of power. He buried his shaft to the absolute hilt inside her and held her pinned there, his hips grinding deep as he emptied himself inside her womb with a low, guttural roar.
He stayed locked inside her for several long seconds before pulling out. A thick stream of white fluid immediately leaked down the insides of her thighs.
Only then did he turn his head to look at me, his eyes completely void of emotion.
“Nella is my new mate,” he said, his voice dropping into a flat, absolute decree. “You will respect her as such. She is the woman who will bear the Alpha lineage you were too weak to carry.”
The room fell completely silent.
I slowly stood up from the bed. I didn't reach for a sheet to cover my nakedness, nor did I lower my gaze. I stood tall, my posture rigid, letting my eyes lock onto Nella with a quiet, lethal calm. I didn't give her the satisfaction of a shouting match or a broken breakdown. I simply looked down at her with icy, utter disdain.
Without uttering a single word to either of them, I turned my back, walked to my dressing room, and let the heavy silence do the talking.
I pulled on a dark tailored sweater, black trousers, and heavy boots. I gathered my essential documents—my birth registry, my mother’s silver ring, and my identification—and slipped them into my pocket.
Stepping out of the dressing room, I bypassed the lower quarters entirely and walked straight to the grand council hall where the guards escorted me to the judgment dais. There, under the cold gaze of the elders, Zane stood holding the Tome of Severance, issuing his public rejection to strip my title.
Instead of waiting for him to finish, I cut him off with a sharp, lethal refusal, raising my hand to sever the bond before he could crush me with it. Zane gasped in pain as the bond snapped. I felt the agony too, but I bit my lip and held my ground. Turning my back on the entire assembly, I walked out through the heavy iron doors into the freezing night air.
The moment the courtyard’s biting wind hit my face, the world tilted sideways. A blinding wave of vertigo wrenched through my skull, stealing the breath straight from my lungs. I slammed both hands against the cold stone wall to keep from collapsing, my knuckles turning white as hot, angry tears finally broke free, tracking down my burning cheeks.
Let them celebrate tonight, I thought, my teeth gritting so hard my jaw ached as I stared out into the dark shadows of the estate. Enjoy the throne while it lasts, Zane. I am going to take every single thing you love, and I will watch you burn.
