Hidden Tears

The lunch bell rang, sending students flooding into the courtyard like a rushing wave.

Laughter filled the air. All the students was very happy. Friends gathered around crowded tables.

Phones came out. Conversations overlapped. The entire school seemed alive.

Everyone had somewhere to sit. Everyone had someone to talk to. Everyone except Amara Collins.

She walked through the crowd quietly, clutching her lunch bag against her chest.

No one called her name. No one waved her over. No one even looked her way. It wasn't because people hated her. It was almost worse than that.

Most of them simply didn't notice she existed. They don't even notice at all.

Amara forced a smile as she passed groups of students laughing together.

She had gotten used to it Or at least she told herself she had. Still, there were days when the loneliness felt heavier than usual.

Days where she was very lonely. Today was one of those days. She headed toward her usual spot beneath the large oak tree near the edge of the courtyard.

The same spot she sat every day. The same spot nobody else wanted. The shade welcomed her like an old friend.

She sat down under the tree quietly. Amara sat down and opened her lunch bag.

Inside was a peanut butter sandwich wrapped carefully in foil. She stared at it for a moment.

She keep staring at the food over and over again Then sighed.

"At least I remembered to eat today."

I remember to put something in my stomach today. The joke sounded sad even to her. She was very sad.

Across the courtyard, laughter exploded from one of the popular tables. Amara glanced over.

The sound of the laugh she hear draw her attention towards there. She start staring at them.

Denzel Alexander sat surrounded by friends. Girls hovered around him.

Everyone seemed eager to hear whatever he was saying. Even from a distance, he looked completely comfortable.

Like he belonged wherever he went. Amara quickly looked away. Their worlds couldn't have been more different.

A rich boy who had everything. A girl struggling to keep her life from falling apart.

She opened her notebook instead. Homework was easier than thinking about reality.

But reality found her anyway Then Her phone vibrated. He quickly removed her phone from her school bag to pick the call.

Amara heart immediately tightened. Her chest hurts.Only one person ever called during school hours. Her Mom.

She answered instantly.

"Mom?"

The weak voice on the other end made her stomach twist.

"Hi, sweetheart."

Amara sat up.

"You should be resting."

"I know."

A cough interrupted the conversation. A painful one. Amara grip tightened around the phone.

"Mom, are you okay?"She asked her mother.

“Are you fine.”

"I am fine."

The answer came too quickly Which meant it wasn't true. Amara knew her mother well enough to recognize the lie.

"Mom."

There is silent between both of them for a moment Then her mother spoke softly.

"The hospital called."

Amara chest tightened.

"What did they say?"

"They want me to come back next week."

Amara swallowed.

"And?"

Another pause.

"The treatment costs more than we expected."

Those words felt like a punch. Amara lowered her head For a moment, she couldn't speak.

Money. Always money. Money everytime. The one problem that never seemed to disappear.

"We will figure something out," Amara said quietly.

Her mother sighed.

"You shouldn't have to worry about these things."

"But I do."

"Amara"

"I will handle it."

Tears threatened to form, but she blinked them away. She hold the tears back.

She couldn't cry. Not now. Not here. Her mother became silent Then she spoke in a trembling voice.

"I am sorry."

Amara heart broke.

"Mom, stop."

"If your father were still"

"Please don't."

Don't start this again. The line fell silent again. Neither of them liked talking about him Especially not now.

Finally, Amara forced a smile into her voice.

"We are going to be okay."

“Everything is going to be fine.”

“It's just the matter of time.”

“Everything is going to be okay.”

Her mother laughed weakly.

"You always say that."

"Because it's true."

"Even when you don't believe it?"

Amara didn't answer Because they both knew the truth. Sometimes she wasn't sure anymore.

After ending the call, Amara stared at the screen for several seconds. She keep staring at the screen for a long time.

The courtyard noise suddenly felt distant. Muted. Like she was underwater. Around her, students laughed.

They talked about parties. Movies. Dates. Weekend plans. Normal teenage things.

Meanwhile, she was wondering how to afford another hospital bill. The unfairness of it all hit her at once.

Amara lowered her head. A tear slipped down her cheek Then another.

She start crying. She quickly wiped them away. No. Not here. Not where people could see.

Not that anyone would notice anyway. Not where everyone will start looking at her.

A bitter laugh escaped her. Maybe that was the problem. Nobody noticed anything about her.

Not her fears. Not her struggles. Not her pain. She could disappear tomorrow and half the school probably wouldn't realize she was gone.

Nobody will notice. The thought hurt more than she expected. Nearby, two girls walked past.

One glanced at Amara briefly Then continued her conversation without stopping.

"Did you see Denzel today?"

"Oh my gosh, yes."

"I swear he is even more handsome than before."

Their voices faded into the crowd. Amara looked down at her notebook.

“Invisible.”

That is what she felt like. a shadow suddenly appeared in front of her. Amara quickly wiped her eyes.

She looked up. A familiar face stood there.

“Mia.”

One of the few people who occasionally spoke to her in class. Mia smiled gently.

"Hey."

Amara immediately forced a smile.

"Hey."

Mia tilted her head.

"Were you crying?"

Are you crying?

"No."

The answer came too quickly.

Mia raised an eyebrow.

"That was a terrible lie."

Amara laughed despite herself.

"A little."

Mia sat beside her For a moment, neither spoke. Sometimes silence felt kinder than questions. Eventually Mia nudged her shoulder.

"You want to talk about it?"

Did you want to talk about it

Amara stared at the grass.

"My mom."

Understanding flashed across Mia face.

"How is she?"

Amara hesitated.

Then shrugged.

"Not great."

Mia expression softened.

"I am sorry."

Amara nodded. The words didn't fix anything But hearing someone care felt surprisingly comforting.

Mia smiled.

"You know something?"

Did you know something

"What?"

"You are stronger than most people here."

You are very strong.

Amara laughed bitterly.

"I don't feel strong."

"That is because strong people rarely do."

The words lingered. For the first time all day, Amara felt a tiny bit lighter. Not fixed Just less alone.

The lunch period slowly came to an end. The break is over. Students began gathering their things.

The noise faded. The crowd started moving back toward the building.

Mia stood.

"I have got biology next."

I have biology class.

"Me too."

"Then let's walk together."

Amara smiled.

A real smile this time.

"Okay."

The two girls headed toward the school main building , As they walked through the crowd, something unusual happened.

Someone called out.

"Amara!"

She stopped. Confused. Almost nobody called her name. She turned around.

But she couldn't immediately see who had spoken. Students moved between them.

Voices echoed Then the crowd shifted And she sighted him immediately.

“Denzel Alexander.”

Standing several feet away. Holding something in his hand. Her notebook.

The one she had accidentally dropped yesterday. The one that fell down without her noticing.

Amara's eyes widened.

"My notebook."

Denzel glanced down at it before looking back at her For the first time, their eyes truly met.

Neither spoke for a moment, The noisy hallway suddenly felt strangely quiet Then Denzel took a step forward.

"I think this belongs to you."He said.

Amara heart skipped unexpectedly. Not because it was Denzel But because she remembered exactly what was written on the first page.

The page he had almost certainly read. A wave of panic rushed through her.

“How much had he seen?”

“And why was he looking at her like he finally noticed she existed?”
