Chapter 4
I landed at Heathrow. Early morning back home.
My phone came back to life.
Messages flooded in.
Over a hundred missed calls from Declan.
I walked out of the airport. Stood on the curb waiting for the company car. Picked up his call.
"Yeah? What do you want?"
Declan's side was eerily quiet.
Just his breathing. Getting heavier.
"Say something. Do you need something or not? I'm hanging up."
I was about to end the call when he finally spoke.
His voice was hoarse. Barely sounded like him.
"Where did you go?"
"London transfer. I texted you last night. Very clearly. Didn't you see it?"
Silence.
"Oh, and the divorce papers on the kitchen island. Sign them and mail them to my lawyer. Don't worry, I drafted them to be completely fair. Illinois law says marital property is split fifty-fifty. I didn't ask for more. You can sign without—"
"Eleanor!"
I pulled the phone away from my ear.
"Will you stop this tantrum already!" His voice was shaking. "A transfer? London? What's so great about being abroad? You don't know anyone there. Who's going to take care of you?"
First time I'd heard Declan say this much.
"Plus you won't get much vacation time. Flying back to Chicago will be a pain."
I laughed.
"I'm not planning to come back."
He went quiet.
"Declan, are you selectively deaf? I told you to sign the divorce papers and send them to my lawyer. I'm divorcing you. We go our separate ways. Do you understand?"
