PROLOGUE
SYDNEY GREY
Sydney was sitting on the sofa at Logan’s. Dave and Tess sat huddled together while Logan sat in his armchair while Lexi was inside the kitchen.
« You sure she’s getting beer right ? She won’t set fire to your house ? »
« Shut up, you bitch. » Lexi walked in juggling four beer bottles and a plate of fries.
Once everybody was halfway through their beer Sydney turned to Dave. « You still haven’t told me what happened in Australia ? »
He started with his story as shivers went down her spine at the cruelty of some people
Dave shuddered at the memory and Tess rubbed his back to soothe him.
Sydney felt sympathy for Dave. That man had went through enough shit.
Sydney wanted what Dave had found with Tess and what Logan had found with Lexi but the one she loved had too much ethics. He was all about right and wrong. Sydney didn’t care about the right and wrong. She had loved him wholeheartedly. She didn’t know if she did anymore. The person she loved.
« What the fuck is this ? » roared Logan.
Sydney followed his gaze to the tv. He flipped through the news channels only to see her face splattered on every channel.
When Logan raised the voice of the tv, dread filled her heart. Her secret was out.
And nothing would stop Sean from killing her for what she did.
Just as she thought that the door to the condo opened with a bang
« Sydney !! » The roar shook the whole room and Logan stood up pulling Sydney behind him.
« It’s okay. It’s fine. » She assured Logan.
When he didn’t budge, she looked helplessly at Lexi who pulled her husband down.
« Don’t. » She warned him and Logan sat, grumbling under his breath.
« What is this ? » Sean muttered throwing the newspaper at her. Fumbling she caught it and looked at the headlines.
She read the news further and sat down shocked.
« How.. ? »
« Who’s was it ? Were you sleeping around ? Was I just another notch on your bedpost ? »
SYDNEY couldn’t take it anymore. She stood up and slapped him hard.
« Don’t you accuse me of shit when you left me. Why do you care now ? You left me. Alone. You have no right to –«
« Was it mine ? »
« Don’t-«
« Was the baby mine, Sydney ? » He yelled.
« Yes, you asshole. He was your baby » she yelled.
The whole room was silent. So silent that she could hear Sean’s breathing. In fact she could hear everyone’s fast breathing.
« Why didn’t you tell me ? »
« What do you expect ? That I should tell you everything after what you did. After you left me there. »
« Yes dammit. It was my baby. »
Sydney gave out a bitter laugh. « You’re calling the baby it , you expect me to tell you this. »
She scoffed , »Everything’s either right or wrong with you, Sean. It’s either black or white. There’s no such thing as compromise and adjustment. You would’ve married me out of responsibility or ordered me to abort it. Marriage was out of the question since I was supposed to marry Logan. Abortion would’ve been the only option for you, wouldn’t it ? »
« Did you abort the baby, Sydney ? »
A searing pain went through her chest and she ached to rub the spot. She wouldn’t answer any of Sean’s question. She didn’t matter to him then. She wouldn’t matter to him now.
And she was tired of waiting. She waited for a year.
The contract hadn’t been signed at that time but George had talked with Sean about it. George Hunt, Sean’s father and Nolan Grey, Sydney’s father had been talking about merging families since they were kids. Sydney was supposed to marry Logan, that was the only thing everyone ever talked at her home. When her father had told her that they were thinking of marrying them both in a year, Sydney had fled to England. From there she traveled to Goa, then to Hong Kong, then to Dubai and then to Sydney. She stayed with Dave for a month and then she went to Italy which had been a big fucking mistake.
By the time, she had reached Italy, George and Nolan had talked to Logan who had then asked for a year to handle everything. Though it took Lexi to call off the wedding, she was happy.
She thought maybe now Sean would be mine. A year and a half and Sean still hadn’t even looked at her.
Sydney was fed up of him. She had met Zach and she had even thought of maybe going on a date with him. She even asked for his number from Dave but before she could call her pregnancy news was on national television.
Shit. Lexi was going to kill her.
« I’m so sorry Lexi. I didn’t… » She trailed at a loss of words.
Lexi stood up and hugged her. « It’s fine. Don’t worry. I’ll look after that stuff. I’ll call my PR. »
Sydney sagged in her arms and she was grateful to find a friend in her boss.
« Answer me, Syd. »
« I don’t care what you think Sean. You did what you have to do. I did what I had to. Go fuck yourself. » She snapped.
Sean’s whole face contorted with rage. Lexi left Sydney’s side and walked over to Sean. She placed a hand on Sean’s shoulder.
« C’mon, Let’s talk. »
