Chapter 2-I'm not here to make promises. I'm here to end things.
The engagement ceremony was the event of the year for the whole city.
It was an absurd waste of money: imported flowers, cut glass, and a red carpet that cost more than a luxury apartment.
All for a single night.
And it wasn't even the wedding.
The union of Blake Corp. and the Reed Group...
The corporate marriage that the media had anticipated as if it were a golden eclipse.
From early morning, reporters filled the hotel entrances, cameras at the ready for live broadcasts and pre-programmed headlines:
"The country's most expensive engagement."
"The couple of the year."
"The perfect heiress and the corporate prince."
Champagne flowed freely, and the guests wore impeccable suits and smiled with the polished coldness only the elite possess.
Everything was orchestrated to perfection.
And yet...
The "bride" never appeared on the red carpet.
The camera flashes flickered, waiting to capture her.
Repeated questions were asked:
"Where is Camila Reed?"
"Delay? Illness? Excessive nerves?"
But when the presenter took the stage to announce the couple, a spotlight turned on.
Camila Reed emerged from the shadows, wearing a tight, elegant, black dress.
"Miss Reed, this segment wasn't in the program," stammered the presenter, stumbling over his cards.
Camila took the microphone with such cold calm that everyone knew something was about to happen.
"I want to make a last-minute announcement."
The entire room held its breath.
Some leaned forward, while others tensed.
Camila smiled.
It was a smile without warmth, without sweetness, and without fear.
"Tonight..." She paused, enjoying the attention. "I'm not here to commit."
A murmur ran through the room.
Before anyone could react, she dropped the bomb:
"I'm here to break off the engagement."
Screams erupted.
Cameras fired wildly.
Sharp murmurs.
"What did she say?"
"She broke off the engagement?"
"What about Adrian?"
His name was quick to appear.
Adrian took the stage, his face completely pale.
"Camila! What are you doing?" he said through clenched teeth, forcing a smile he could barely sustain. "My love, stop joking..."
But behind him, as always, was Dani.
Camila raised her hand.
She slapped Adrian.
The sound echoed like a gunshot.
The entire room was in shock.
Someone exhaled unintentionally, breaking the silence: "Ufff..."
Camila spoke with absolute clarity:
"Yesterday, you said I was 'too strong,' that I was 'like a board in bed,' and that 'the love of your life is my cousin Dani.'" She looked at him without blinking. "I didn't make anything up. Those are your words, Adrian.”
His face turned from pale to gray.
A dead man walking.
Camila continued, each word sharper than the last.
“So let me do you a favor.'And I'm not doing this because you want to get rid of me,' she added with a calmness that chilled the blood.
"I'm doing it because I don't want to be here anymore."
Dani stepped forward, trying to smooth things over.
"Cousin, don't be like that! I never wanted to—"
"Shut up, Dani." Camila didn't even look at her. "I have nothing to talk to you about."
The entire room froze.
In the back row, a man lowered his half-raised glass.
Sebastian Cole.
The youngest billionaire in the country.
He appeared on global rankings as one of the top ten on the planet.
But tonight, it wasn’t his wealth that made the room shift.
It was the way he was looking at her.
Reporters screamed. Guests whispered behind trembling champagne flutes. Adrian stood onstage, pale as a ghost.
But Camila walked through the chaos without flinching.
That’s when she felt it—that gaze.
She looked up.
His eyes weren’t judging her.
They appreciated her.
Choosing her.
"Miss Reed," he murmured, his voice low enough to be a secret between them. "If you ever get tired of men who don't know your worth, you should know I'm not one of them."
