Chapter 3

When I woke up in the hospital, everything hurt. The gunshot wound in my shoulder throbbed with each breath, slowly being treated. A nurse checked my vitals, her face professionally sympathetic.

"You're very lucky, Mrs. Blackwood. The bullet missed major arteries. You'll make a full recovery."

Mrs. Blackwood. The title felt like a lie on my tongue.

"Has anyone called my husband?" I asked, hating myself for caring.

"We tried multiple times, but he said he'd visit when he could. Would you like us to try again?"

I shook my head. Of course. He was probably still with Elena, making sure she was comfortable, safe, protected.

The nurse left, and I was alone with my thoughts and the steady beep of monitors. I reached for my phone with my good arm and saw nothing—no missed calls, no texts. Three days had passed since the shooting, and Adrian hadn't even checked if I was alive.

But someone had called. Grandfather Sterling.

"Little one," his voice was gentle when I answered, "I heard what happened. Marcus is already on his way to get you. It's time to come home."

"I can't leave yet," I whispered, though I wasn't sure why I was hesitating.

"You can. And you will. You've given that boy enough of yourself. It's time to remember who you really are."

Who I really am. The words echoed in my mind. For three years, I'd been suppressing my true identity, hiding my real connections. The Sterling empire wasn't just wealthy—it was legendary. We were old money, the original power players. And I, as the last of the pure bloodline, carried an influence that surpassed even the most powerful CEO.

I was a hidden heiress—more powerful than Adrian could ever dream of being. I'd hidden my identity, suppressed my connections, played the role of supportive wife because I loved him.

But that was over.

"Send Marcus," I said finally. "I'll be ready."

The next two days passed in a blur. I packed my things in secret, careful not to alert anyone. Adrian finally visited once, spending exactly fifteen minutes at my bedside, distracted by his phone. He didn't ask how I was feeling. Didn't ask about the pain still shooting through my shoulder. He just said he was glad I was okay and that he had "important meetings" to attend to.

I knew "important meetings" meant Elena.

On the third night, as evening fell, Marcus arrived. He was Grandfather Sterling's right hand, a distinguished man with silver-streaked hair.

"Ready, cousin?" he asked softly.

"More than ready."

We left through the back entrance of the hospital. But as we reached the car, I paused. I turned back to look at the city one last time—at the skyline where I'd wasted three years of my life.

And then I let go.

I'd been holding back for so long, compressing my true identity into a tiny box. Now, I revealed it all.

The transformation was instant. I made one phone call—to the Sterling family's chief legal officer. Within hours, news would break. The dormant Sterling empire was awakening. Markets would shift. Business leaders would scramble.

Raw power rippled through the business world like thunder.

Every CEO within the region would feel it. The sheer influence, the ancient authority of the Sterling dynasty.

In the distance, I could imagine the chaos at Blackwood Industries. Executives scrambling, confused, terrified by the sudden shift in the market.

At his office, Adrian would be feeling it too. He'd be standing at his window, his business instincts screaming at him that something massive, something more powerful than him, had just awakened in his territory.

But he wouldn't know it was me. He'd never sensed my true identity. To him, I was just quiet little Sophia, the convenient wife.

Let him wonder, I thought as I drove north with Marcus, my mind barely processing the skyline fading behind us. Let him search for the mysterious power player who just shifted the entire market.

He'll never know it was his wife—the one he threw away.

By the time he figures it out, I'll be long gone, ruling the empire I was always meant to lead.

The girl who loved him was dead. The CEO who would never bow to anyone had just been born.

Behind me, I could imagine one long, confused call—Adrian's voice, filled with shock and confusion, trying to understand the market shift that had just shaken his world.

I didn't answer.

I just drove north, toward my true home, and didn't look back.
