Chapter 5

When I woke again, my nostrils filled with the pungent smell of disinfectant.

I moved my fingers. A dull pain came from the back of my hand, wrapped in thick bandages.

"Evelyn, you're awake?"

Vincent's voice came from the bedside, hoarse and exhausted.

I turned my head to see him sitting there, eyes completely bloodshot, stubble on his jaw seemingly darker.

He looked like he'd kept vigil all night.

"Do you feel uncomfortable anywhere?" He leaned in to touch my forehead, and I instinctively dodged.

His hand froze in midair, a flash of hurt crossing his face.

"Where's Grace?" I asked, my voice dry and rough.

His gaze flickered, avoiding mine, tone somewhat stiff. "Her hand injury was more serious, needed debridement and... follow-up treatment. But her life's not in danger."

I looked at him, waiting for more. I knew the important part came next.

He took a deep breath, as if steeling himself, gaze returning to my face with an almost pleading quality. "Evelyn, I know you've been wronged. But Grace... it wasn't on purpose. That gun was an old model, it misfired..."

"It didn't misfire." I cut him off, voice calm but certain. "She deliberately shot at the space beside her own arm."

"I know you're angry." He tried to take my uninjured hand, but I pulled it back. He grasped empty air, fingers curling, voice dropping. "I apologize to you on her behalf, okay? She still has to care for the baby, she can't come over right now..."

"God, you're apologizing to me on her behalf? In what capacity?" I laughed, the sound carrying undisguised mockery. "Her lover?"

"And why should I forgive a mistress who hurt me?"

"Do you think that because I love you, I'll just keep enduring?"

Vincent looked like he'd been struck, face instantly pale. "Evelyn, I told you I'd send her away. This was just an accident..."

Meaningless explanations. Nauseating.

I was done.

"Get out." I cut him off softly.

"Evelyn..."

"Get out!" I jerked my head up, screaming hysterically. The wound tore from the violent movement, the bandage immediately soaking through with blood.

"Evelyn! Calm down! The wound opened!" Vincent's face went white. He rushed to restrain me, but I flailed wildly.

I couldn't hear anything, my mind holding only one thought: leave here, leave this man who betrayed me.

My arm struck the bed's metal guardrail hard with a dull thud.

Turns out when your heart breaks completely, you really can't feel physical pain.

Nurses rushed in. Several people together barely managed to pin me to the bed.

The cold sedative entered my bloodstream. My struggles gradually weakened.

Vincent's eyes were red as he kept calling my name, voice full of panic.

Before consciousness was completely swallowed by darkness, I used my last strength to spit out two words:

"Get out of my world. Forever."

Tears slid past my temples, into my hair. This time, it was truly over.
