chapter 1

A knock sounded throughout my bedroom, causing me to jump in fright from the sudden sound. Ice quickly emerged from my fingertips and onto the book that was open in my hands. A gasp escaped my lips and I quickly threw the book on the ground next to the bed to avoid freezing it anymore. The book landed on the carpet. I would have thought that the soft material would've caused the sound that the book made on impact to be quiet, but I was wrong. The book landed on the ground with a loud thud.

My sister, Lilah, opened my bedroom door a little bit, only enough for a portion of her body to fit through the crack. She opened her mouth to say something, but she cut herself off as her gaze went straight to the half frozen book that was now lying on the ground.

An exasperated sigh escaped past her lips before she spoke. "Again, Really?" She asked. It was a rhetorical question as she already knew the words that were about to come out of my mouth.

"Sorry, but I can't help it," I shrugged. "You shouldn't have startled me like that." This was always my reply when a similar situation happened. I get startled by something, my powers go crazy, and the same response comes out of my mouth.

Riley rolled her eyes. "Whatever," she said, annoyance lacing her voice. "I came up here to tell you that dinner is ready. The pack and I are waiting for you to make your appearance." I gave her a confused look before realization crossed my face. "Anytime soon, please," she added.

"Oh my goodness!" I gasped, stumbling out of my bed. "I completely forgot that we were having dinner altogether today." I continued my stumbling all the way to my closet, opening it and rummaging through it. "I'll be down in five," I informed. Lilah. There was no doubt in my mind that she heard me because shortly after I told her what time I would be downstairs, I heard the satisfying click of my door closing.

Not really caring about my appearance, I settled for some black leggings and a gray, oversized tee-shirt. I quickly changed into my new set of clothes before going back into my closet and taking out some black, slip-on shoes. I then went back over to my dresser, where a mirror was positioned above it and grabbed my brush from the side. I ran the brush through my tangled hair a couple of times before throwing it up into a messy bun.

Just as I finished getting myself ready to face my pack, a strong, male voice rang throughout the pack house. "Rayna!" My father called. "We are waiting for you!" My father was the alpha of my pack; the Moonlight pack.

"I'm coming, Dad!" I called back, equally as loud as he had. I quickly rushed to my door and opened it, exiting the room and closing the door behind me.

I made my way down the stairs and into the huge dining room. At the center, was an extensive mahogany table. It easily sat over fifty people. Dangling over the table, was a massive, crystal chandelier.

Not much of the pack comes to these dinners that we have. Only about forty-five people or so show up out of the hundreds of pack members that reside in our pack. It was justified though, as the pack members had their own lives to live.

"Rayna," my father acknowledged me as I entered the dining room. "Come sit." My father placed his hand on an empty seat that was beside him, patting it. Riley was already sitting on the other side of him.

I nodded my head swiftly and made my way over to the empty seat that was reserved just for me. I ignored the hateful looks that some of the pack members threw my way. No words were exchanged, however, only looks.

My pack wasn't too fond of me. They all knew about my powers and they hated it. They hated how I was different than them; how I couldn't control my own abilities. They've bullied me my whole life. Sure, my father was the alpha and I could easily tell him, but that was easier said than done. I recieved many threats, threatening me that if I were to ever tell my father, I would end up severely hurt.

A silence hung around the room like thick fog on a gloomy day. It was killing me to say the least, so I spoke up. "Why is everyone so quiet?" As soon as the words left my lips, conversation erupted throughout the room. However, some stayed quiet and started picking on their food.

Minutes into the dinner, I hadn't uttered another word since it had started. I was concentrated on eating my food. As I stabbed a piece of meat with my fork, an uncomfortable heat started to rise in the utensil that was in my hand. It took everything in me not to yell out once the heat became slightly too hot, but then, the heat became unbearable. I hissed loudly and threw the fork across the table as a reflex. It landed in front of the person that was sitting across from me, causing them to stand up abruptly.

The conversations that were previously happening, died down and everyone's stares were now on me once again. I could feel my cheeks heat up in embarrassment and the anger that was radiating from my father next to me. I turned to look at him and regretted it instantly. The expression that was on my fathers face made me flinch so bad, that flames erupted from my hand that was resting on the table. The fire easily spread to the table cloth, catching it on fire. I heard gasps around me, followed by the sliding of chairs as everyone around me stood up. I too did the same.

"Rayna!" My father yelled. "Put it out!" I nodded swiftly and faced both of my palms towards the roaring flames. I was expecting ice to come out and cover the surface of the table, but instead, more flames emerged from my palms, making the already large fire roar as it got bigger. I heard screams come from terrified pack members as they took larger steps away from the table. I felt my heart rate speed, not only at the mess I was making, but at the amount of trouble I would be in once this was over.

I faced my palms towards the fire, silently begging that I wouldn't make it bigger. To my relief, the correct element emerged from my hands and covered the table, putting out the flames. I sigh found its way past my lips and I heard a similar sound coming from the pack members.

I did it , I gushes to Isla; my wolf.

Not before almost setting the whole pack house on fire , she replied. I could feel the smirk that was most definately plastered onto her face. I rolled my eyes at her not celebrating my newest accomplishment with me. I was about to fire something back at her, but I was interrupted by someone clearing their throat loudly.

By the tone of it, I recognized it as my father being the one behind the sound. I turned to him and flinched again. Lucky for me, I was able to control myself this time.

"I-I'm so, so sorry," I squeaked out. "I-" my father cut me off, making me stand perfectly straight and tense.

"What was that!" He yelled. I didn't speak; not being able to find any words to utter. "I keep telling you one time after another to control yourself, but you just can't seem to do that, can you?" His words stung, but I didn't mutter anything but a mere apology.

"I'm sorry," I whispered. My head bowed as I spoke.

"Go up to your room," he ordered. "I'll be up to speak with you momentarily."

I found myself nodding, not wanting to anger my father anymore. "Yes, sir." Hushed conversations started around me. They were most likely about me and the events that had just unfolded.

I slowly turned around and walked towards the stairs. Hot tears threatened to run down my cheeks and I let them, not caring if anyone saw me crying. They already judge me enough, why not add one more thing for them to judge me about?

Upon arrival to my room, I went over to the bed and let myself fall onto it, head first. I let out a frustrated groan as I flip myself around and sit up on the bed. Why me? I asked Isla, as if she was the one who knew the answer to all of my questions. Why am I cursed with this? I looked down at my hands as I said that. A couple droplets fell on my palm, freezing upon contact. I let out an angry scream and threw the now frozen droplets. They hit the wall and I watched them shatter. The shards that once made up my tears landed on the floor.

Just as I let myself fall back on the bed, the door to my bedroom opened, revealing a tall figure, whom I recognized as my father. He closed the door behind himself and proceeded to make his way towards my bed before sitting down next to me. I didn't utter a single word, my frustration taking over me.

"Rayna, sweetheart, are you alright?" I stayed quiet, focusing on a small joke that was on the ceiling. He sighed and positioned his body so he was facing me more. "Look, I'm sorry for getting angry with you," he said apologetically, real concern etching his features. "You put my pack members in danger and I was concerned over their safety."

I sat back up on the bed and gave my father a look; one that I wouldn't consider giving any other alpha. "Dad, what am I supposed to do?" I threw my arms up into the air. "I can't do anything right the first time. Especially considering my situation."

My father sighed, not very happy with my response. "You're going to have to learn how to control it," he said sternly and I gave him another look.

"How am I supposed to do that?" I questioned and he shrugged. Silence enveloped us for a moment before my father spoke again.

"I don't want another incident like tonight's to happen again," he said, making me raise an eyebrow. "So until you learn how to control yourself, I don't want you near too many people at a time." My eyes widened and I opened my mouth to speak, but no words came out. I was shocked to say the least. He couldn't just do that, could he?

"Dad! You know that's near to impossible with so many people living in the pack house!" I exclaimed. "I don't go anywhere else because you don't let me! Where else am I supposed to go?" My voice raised in volume with every word that left my lips.

"Don't raise your voice at me, Rayna" He used his alpha tone, which only made my blood boil even more. He never used that tone on me. Usually, when an alpha uses his tone on you, you have a natural instinct to obey. That wasn't the case for me, however. My anger took over me.

"Don't use your tone on me, Dad!" I yelled out of anger. His eyes widened at my sudden outburst. I had never thought to disobey him like that before, but I was angry- no, scratch that.

I was infuriated.

"What am I supposed to do? Sit in my room and do nothing all day?"

"That is exactly what I expect you to do." His statement only fueled my anger even more.

"That isn't fair!" I yelled. "You have so many high expectations for me! You expect me to be someone that I'm not!" His lips parted, signaling to me that he was about to speak. I cut him off before he could say a word. "I'm not going to be the perfect daughter that you want me to be!" I let more tears slide down my face.

He tried to place a hand on my shoulder in a comforting manner, but I shrugged it off. "Don't touch me," I snapped. I stood up from the bed and ran to the door as I cried. I ran out of the room and slammed the door behind me, ignoring my fathers many commands and pleas to return.

I needed some time away from this place.
